Edit - I never read any comments since the first two.

Edit - it’s ironic that the uncompromising ideology of the left is making Trump 2.0 inevitable. Absolute shame. Read the room folks.

Edit - next day: wow, 60 downvotes. I must have hit a nerve close to truth to illicit a response beyond indifference. 16 upvotes, decent ratio. I’m pretty sure that speaking in support of speech protections will become more of a freedom of religion issue in the years to come, as post-Marxist critical theory takes on more and more of a dogmatic, theological place in intellectual society. I can assure not each of you is at the end of their political and ideological journeys, and happy to have planted this seed. May it bloom. -Omar

Lemmy might hate me for this… Musk is right on speech. It’s not often that those in power will have the moral compass to justly decide what ideas can be said and what cannot. Without free speech protections, none of the LGBTQIA+ movement, or other social movements, would have taken hold. It sucks that extremists will espouse hurtful views, but it’s absolutely critical that the speech of minority voices be protected. What will the world be like if the assholes win and say the only legal speech is something that would completely abhor us today. Look at speech in Russia. I believe the country has just designated LGBTQIA+ activists terrorists. What will happen if the wrong people get power in the USA or Europe?

Edit: I’m not going to reply any more. I’ve said my piece.

Edit: one more edit for the downvotes. Someone you don’t like can have a correct idea. Someone who you admire can have the wrong idea. There’s an argument that speech protections should extended into the defacto town squares (short of harassment, etc…), and because of the reasons I stated above, it’s an important humanitarian issue. I’m not some asshole troll trying to stir anything up, just wanted to voice an idea I feel is important. Wish you all well.

Another edit 30 mins later: I’m an HSP with PTSD, so as much as I would like to chat and learnt some other perspectives, my nervous system has a hard time with stimulation when I don’t feel safe that I can be speaking to someone in good faith. I understand this may seem counterintuitive to my argument, but I still think speech protection is an important humanitarian issue that is worth dealing with speech I don’t agree with.

Edit: 1 hour later. Well, I never thought it would get this much disapproval. May you all live life with wisdom and honor and light. And may you never be silenced in your pursuit of justice. Peace.

Goodbyeworld,

I agree with you. Except, many don’t - look at Europes speech laws.

Goodbyeworld,

Free speech is certainly under threat. Arguments against free speech have never been as popular as they are now in the U.S., for instance.

Goodbyeworld,

“Who or what is harming his free speech” - I never made that claim. You’re talking to your own mind, not mine, and trying to incite a response in me with your dismissive tone. Have a nice day.

Goodbyeworld,

Sshhh, don’t tell anyone the church was a patron of the sciences. Ruins the narrative.

Goodbyeworld,

Musk is a weirdo, but I like the dystopian stupid truck and it looks cool. I’ll see myself out though.

YSK that if your turn signal is blinking unusually fast (like 3 or more times a second), it generally means you have a bulb out.

Why YSK: Your signals alert other drivers as to what you’re doing; a signal bulb costs a few bucks and is usually a quick and easy repair to do yourself (consult YouTube); and any place that regulates motor vehicles probably requires you to have working turn signals. So knowing when and how to replace a burned out signal bulb...

Goodbyeworld,

This is really smart. Considering tail light will get you pulled over, this can save you some pain. I never figured out a good way to check on my own. Thanks!

Goodbyeworld,

Hey what percent is $14 billion of the $4.3 trillion Americans spend on healthcare?

Goodbyeworld,

$14 billion is like $40 bucks per American. Might be able to buy a toothbrush and some bandaids with that healthcare money.

Goodbyeworld,

Sure, I agree we can get cheaper healthcare, but $14 billion amounts to like $40 bucks per American. Not buying many more healthcare and schools with that. This meme (at least the second part) is stupid and won’t convince anyone who supports Israel aid to change their minds because the math is not convincing. Makes for a weak argument, imho.

Goodbyeworld,

Yeah, I’m always second guessing my math too, lol. I think it should billion not million in this case.

Goodbyeworld,

Let them doom. Can’t be too optimistic, the internet gets upset.

Goodbyeworld,

there were no cameras in the Middle Ages. Checkmate shitposters.

Goodbyeworld,

I just dropped a few ancient scrolls in the loo.

Goodbyeworld,

I agree in sentiment with this, but any serious reading of the Christian Bible shows the entire point of Christ is basically replacing the vengeful god with a loving and forgiving one. These people are just bad Christians.

Goodbyeworld,

Yeah, I mean Christianity, i.e. being Christ-like is an extremely tough ask, hence forgiveness is a sacrament. It’s really all about keeping up that push and eventually overcoming our bad habits or learning to act more selflessly.

Goodbyeworld,

Lol. I guess a good faith response from a theologian or someone like Leibniz would be that we by definition are much smaller than god, so we don’t have enough information to judge god.

If we are going to play the “let’s say god does exist” game, I’d say the if god is creating rational beings with some sort of free will, and not just automatons that do exactly what the creator wants, and he created a stable world based on physics to house these beings, it’s going to get pretty messy at times. Death itself would surely seem like evil and cause a man to curse god - until a man ponders living forever and realizes that death is in fact a blessing.

I like the idea that god is the one already stuck living forever, and creates us as to be be able to experience mortality. But I can also say that’s all bullshit and we could never know for sure, and is arguably very unlikely, given the current circumstances.

Perhaps in death we will know.

Goodbyeworld,

Yeah I don’t know if I’m going to go ahead and judge millions of people on whether or not they are selfish. Throwing the first stone and all that. 😉

Goodbyeworld,

Maybe we are viewing it inside out and the expanding phenomenon isn’t driven by expanding towards the outer limits by energy of big bang, but rather being drawn in to an infinitely small center by a black hole.

Goodbyeworld,

Not sure y’all understand what winter in Chicago can mean. Hope for these folks sake it’s a mild one. Some years it can be below zero for weeks. We will be doing everything we can to make sure these people don’t freeze to death, but these people will need help beyond what the people of Chicago and our local government will be able to muster.
