Back in August I took a camera and a cartridge of Kodak Vision3 with me to in Denmark.

This is the result.

I'm not going to #CCCamp this year, even though I could easily get a ticket even now.

Yes, the tickets are expensive, but it's really their idea of what makes a hacker camp differs from mine.

Also, mixed toilets and showers are not some activist freedom shite, they're creepy. Even the ladies showers in the shower wonderland had an open changing area. No thanks.

Find the smaller camps folks, they're way more rewarding.

I was once shown someone's project on speeding up the response of those cheap Chinese photodiode modules, and now I can't find it anywhere. Has anyone seen the thing I'm talking about?

Mildly sad, because our much loved family cat from the '80s and '90s wandered into my dream.

It's approaching the deadline for registration to be in time for UK election season. Certainly local, possibly general election too.

For the first time in my life, I won't bother.

Partly to stay off the radar of shitty family, but mostly because this time I see no point in voting. Both main parties are institutionally transphobic, one is now far right and the other seems desperate to follow them. My constituency is a safe seat anyway so a Lib Dem vote means nothing.

It's all rather sad.

The random things you think of while lying in bed half asleep.

In the 90s there were disk doublers, storage drivers that compressed your volumes for more space. There was also a RAM doubler that claimed the same thing but turned out to be a scam.

Idly wondering whether a modern multi core processor with core running at many times bus speed would be able to do the process so much more efficiently as to make the result much faster than a '90s IDE disk.

Because yes. It's totally relevant.

Can I make a suggestion? How about if people going to #EMFcamp have a non-volatile #EMFnamebadge?

The event badge is a thing of beauty, but its display is small and it needs to be powered on to see the name.

Can I suggest people have something that's large enough to read, and which doesn't need batteries? One of the e-ink badges for example, or just a big bit of card with your name written in marker pen.

I know I'm not alone in having a poor memory for names and faces.

New toy, a Bolex Super 8 camera. Slightly ruined by the rubber eye cup having gone goopy with age and sticking to everything.

It occurs to me that a bunch of people I know online will be at EMF and it would be nice to have a pint with them.

Can this be arranged?

Now. I am a 6'7" trans woman and thus lots of people recognise me, but I have a shit memory for names and faces. I think I am not alone in that.

The sight of a bunch of geeks all with large name badges will be funny.

A big bag of M12 lenses has arrived. All sorts of focal lengths.

About 20 quid's worth. I think I will re-evaluate my use of C-mount lenses.

I keep hearing people say my profession is under threat from AI.

The more I see the more I now believe the opposite, that good quality technical writing is a premium product.

I know a lot of @trans_rescue supporters follow me here so maybe it's time for an update.

The last few weeks have been a bit brutal, we had to abruptly move Eden House after it was attacked.

Our passengers both Ugandan and Kenyan are safe and in new accommodation, but getting them there has been taxing in the extreme.

Something happened on Friday that has affected me badly, left me completely demotivated, and wondering why the hell I bother.

Can't really talk about it. And it's nothing to do with Hackaday. But it's very annoying.

I notice (finally) a bit of coverage for the outrageous prices younger people have to pay for car insurance.

I've written a lot about the over use of complex technology in cars making them shorter lived and less repairable.

I wonder whether commercial pressures from the insurance industry might be what reduces that.

This is where open source software comes unstuck, the lack of accountability and fix-it-yourself mentality.

Today, OpenShot will only export audio, not video. Best guess, some random setting in a Manjaro update had broken video export.

I have no clue what to do, a www search is little help. A future update will probably silently fix it, but meanwhile no video.

There will be neckbeards who will say "Huh, just learn how to fix it yourself!".

I bet OpenShot video export works under Windows.

Back in the 1980s it was comically easy to steal some performance cars. We had an epidemic of car theft.

They didn't criminalise screwdriver ownership, they mandated engine immobilisers on new cars. The epidemic slowed to a trickle.

The solution to built-in security vulnerabilities is to mandate products without them.

Not to ban tools which might exploit them, leaving the vulnerabilities in place and leaving the crooks able to keep stealing.

It seems to be a popular view around here that copyright is bad, and should be abolished. Mainly because large corporations own copyrighted works, and sometimes abuse copyright law.

People who hold that view are IMHO idiots, with no understanding what copyright is, or how it works.

All I can say to them is this: be careful what you wish for.

I read a guide written by a left-wing Israeli on not being antisemitic in talking about the actions of the far right Israeli government in Gaza. It struck a chord for me as a Brit.

First of all, it was spot on in identifying the antisemitic tropes and rabbit holes in talking about Israel. But beyond that, there was a strong sense of someone very uncomfortably failing to come to terms with the shitty things their government has done in the past. That's the bit that struck a chord as a Brit.

I'm in an odd position, I'm at the grand old age of 53, and after over 20 years of wishing I could, I've finally realised I am not too old to do training.

So I've spent several months bringing my fitness and strength up. I'm a bit overweight, but otherwise in good nick.

But being an older person taking up what is generally a younger person's sport, I'm overcome with shyness at the prospect of encountering other people doing parkour training. I need to overcome this.

All this AI stuff is confusing if you grew up on a farm.

Only farm kids, looking at a field of cows sired by a prize bull, will get this.

The sad thing about this election is that Labour have moved so close to the Conservative Party that I honestly see very little difference.

As a trans person I see a Labour front and back bench stuffed with terfs, and see business as usual.
