How do I tame my frustration toward my aging parents?

My parents are 57 and 63. My mother is erratic, forgetful, and when she gets mad she sometimes screams and throws things. My father is slowly going deaf, getting slower and more stubborn and forgetful as well. They can be infuriating sometimes, but I know that they’re aging and I can’t be mad at them. How do I deal with...

Treat them how you would wish to be treated when you are old, forgetful, stubborn, deaf, and slower. Getting old can suck. It’s angering. It hurts. They are humans with emotions. Don’t forget that.

Ah, that’s why. I did not know that. Thank you.

I agree with you. A long time ago, those of us “in the know” techies could parse the difference like it was a native language. When talking anything but computers, it was always the SI of 1000. When talking about computers, it was always 1024.

I think the masses were confused and the SI purists felt their SI prefixes were being corrupted. So they made a distinction/standard between binary numbering system prefixes and decimal numbering system prefixes.

I hate it. Feels wrong because I’m old and set in my ways. People like me are confused because we still use the old nomenclature, and when someone else uses the old nomenclature (when talking about computers), it’s ambiguous to us because we don’t know which numbering system they are using (e.g., binary as opposed to decimal). I still have to ask and half say binary and half say decimal.

I suppose if they’re teaching it in high school and college it’ll become native soon enough, if it hasn’t already with the next generations.

I wasn’t talking about HDD sizes, but I know the person to which I was replying was talking about HDD’s specifically. I shou,d have clarified I was talking in more general terms (CPU RAM, NVM sizes, etc.)

I remember being miffed about the advertising of the HDD sizes. So I think you are correct there. Wish I could go back to the mid 80’s and do some research on my old HDDs and floppies. I honestly just can’t remember, so thank you.

I hate the new prefixes, not just because they aren’t the older nomenclature, but because they feel ridiculous to speak out loud. If a less silly sounding prefix was chosen, I probably wouldn’t be tainted about it.

This is exactly right. Divergence was small when sizes were small. Good point.

The question I have, are sales of these products down? Do these implementations work to reduce unhealthy consumption? Are hospitals and medical offices seeing less revenue? If they don’t actually work, what will?

I think some news companies are trying to sue him for linking to articles without paying them, which is a strange turn of events given it wasn’t too long ago that businesses would paid you to link to their site (that’s what Elon says anyway; I’m not in web commerce so I don’t know personally how it works.) So, I guess he wants to have people write the news on his site instead?

I think news companies are going bust?

As some said on Slashdot: ART is Asshole Research Transport.

If you read the book(s), you’ll get the reference.

i read the article. It says 1 in 5 die from it. It’s spreading due to warmer water. It thrives where river water and salt/sea water mix. If you have scratches or abrasions, it can enter that way. One person who survived said he will never go into water again.

It isn’t like anything. One moment you are counting down, the very next moment you are waking up. Time does not pass for you. It’s one instant (counting down) to the next (waking up.) It’s very strange. Like you skipped through time. Like you magically moved forward in time instantaneously. You will never have memories from when you are under.

A lot of wealthy individuals “park” their money in things like real estate and art. For the art, they safely pack it away in warehouses. There’s a whole industry that’ll do it for you. A lot of them dont even see the art. It’s just a wealth parking vehicle.

Another avenue is starting one or more non-profits and philanthropy organizations for the money.

And another is a living trust, to avoid probate when you die, to maximize the inheritance for your surviving beneficiaries.

No, this is real. An iPhone to kids is like a social status symbol and potential family wealth indicator. Of course it’s absolute bull, but just as adults are, kids are horribly manipulated by marketing and advertising too. Kids have glommed onto phones for conspicuous consumption whereas adults glom onto cars and houses for said signals.

Of course not all adults or kids do this, but a great deal do. That’s where the stupid bumper sticker comes from that says, “He who has the most toys at the end wins!” Very ugly stuff, in my opinion. And if there is a devil, that’s where it lives mostly.

Pray for one more second of ecstatic comfort and numbness to the world. Contemplate why the world is the way it is. It’s not right.

Sync identifies a comment as me, if it's from someone with the same username but on a different instance.

I was very confused until I realized a comment I read was from someone with my username, but registered to a different Lemmy instance. By identifies, I mean the username is highlighted and the blue avatar indicating it’s me is present. Also, this doesn’t feel like the best place to report bugs, is there a better way?

Architect, marine biologist, or importer/exporter? Aren’t you glad you chose that username, now that you’ve heard that joke about 9 billion times by now?

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

George Castanza is a short, bald man that lives with his parents. He is insecure. To impress women, he often says he’s either a marine biologist, an importer/exporter, or an architect. He usually gets caught in a lie. In order to continue to convince someone he’ll go into further detail with a bit about his name is Art Vandaley from Vandalay Industries. He even had one of his friends answer the phone as such for some reason, don’t remember. Some lie about trying to establish a good reputation for a job or something, or trying to get promoted when working for the Yankees baseball team. Was a long time ago; I watched the originals when they were new (yes I am old). So I probably didn’t get all the details exactly right. I’m sure others with better memories than I will correct me. It was the funniest television of its time. Newer generation usually isn’t into stuff their parents (or even grandparents) watched, which is understandable.

Will we start seeing everything say “Made in Vietnam” now instead of “Made in China?” Vietnam is also a communist country, so why would the US do this?

I sometimes use this one called InviZible Pro on F-Droid. Have you ever used that? In addition to whole system TOR, it also has Purple I2P and DNSCrypt. Was wondering why one would use one over the other regarding whole system TOR? Just curious.

Question for software developers: how do you organize your To Do list at work?

I’m asking because I’m wondering if there’s a more efficient way for me to handle my notes at work. Currently I just use a txt file in Notepad++. I use this file to track all of the stuff I have to do, such as tasks for stories I’m working on, next steps for projects, discussions I need to follow up on, questions and...

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

Todo.txt plain text file. Use Vim. Date and todo statement. Sometimes more for explanations. I never delete anything in it; just make an X next to todo’s I’ve completed. File goes back many years. I can easily search for something I did a long time ago.

And then there’s MS OneNote for capturing howto’s, quick script one-liners, cheat sheets, diagrams, notes on various industry interfaces, etc.

Then there’s SCM for bug, feature, and track tasking.

And usually notepad paper and pen for meetings, which if there are todo’s, go into my electronic todos.txt file.

JoeClu,
@JoeClu@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed about INI for simple stuff. Not good for arrays and nested things though. Usually use binary for that type of config (with clear documentation). Most binary config files I use are plain old C structures. I’m not a web person so no need to make the config plain text.
