Secret RCMP report warns Canadians may revolt once they realize how broke they are (nationalpost.com)

Reading things like this makes it make sense as to why the government is putting big efforts into reducing legal gun ownership (and the type of guns targeted, ex. 50 cal rifles) instead of going after criminals and makes sense of things like the Online Harms Bill… The elites are trying to prevent a repeat of 1789 France or...

This isn’t an article, it’s an opinion piece. Why didn’t they (National Post) put this out as an article if it isn’t just more of their FUD pushing conservative talking points?

There’s no info on when the RCMP paper was written, what the agenda is, who wrote it, or how it was discovered to make the ATIP request. It’s just a lot of opinion on the economy.

And then OP makes it about guns. <eye roll> If you’re going to add commentary at least put it in the comments so it can be voted on separately.

Am I allowed to call them traitors as a Canadian?

I guess that whole “it’s mightier than the sword” thing is coming back to bite.

If you’re feeling defeated, don’t rush into trying to fix it. Sleep on it. The pain will ebb, even just a little, and you won’t try to do something hasty or haphazard in frustration.

Then come back to it a day or two later and try what’s been suggested (or that’s come to mind while you’re in the shower, on the can, etc.)

Good luck. We’ve all been there and just remember that the only people who don’t make mistakes are the ones who never try something new.

I disagree. You might as well say you can’t upvote or downvote without posting your opinion. Consider the post an upvote for the article.

Some people want to post content, some people want to comment, some people want to vote, some people want to lurk, and some people don’t care. Having to publicly state your opinion would create a barrier to posting news articles that would kill the community… There will hardly be anything to comment, vote, or lurk on.

If you want a community where people post news and their opinions - and have to do both - start one, and unsubscribe from the communities you don’t like.

JohnnyCanuck,
@JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca avatar

If you do end up finding or making a community like the one you want, I suggest you make it so the poster’s opinion is added in comments not in the post itself. Otherwise it becomes impossible to distinguish between votes for the article and votes for the comment. It’s already bad enough that you can’t distinguish between votes for the newsworthiness/quality/source of an article vs the feelings on the content.

Take this article as a case in point: lemmy.sdf.org/post/11159076

What are people downvoting? Is the article not worthy of being news? Is the article from a bad news source? Do people dislike what happened in the case? Or are people downvoting the poster’s commentary?

In my opinion that article should be sitting at a positive score as news, so it is visible to more people and available for discussion.

Why are people joining .world to begin with?

Because how it works when you first join is very confusing, and why you would choose any particular server is not clear at all.

Also, people want to join something that is bigger and more active because it feels like it would be better (more stable, more content, etc.)

All I see is “****************************?”

What did you type?

Are there any organizations to sponsor a family in Canada (microfinance for Canadians, not immigration)

There are organizations like Save a Family Plan where you can sponsor a family who is living in poverty overseas and help give them funds for education etc. Are there any organizations like this for Canadian families? I tried searching online but it kept showing results for how to sponsor one’s family to come to Canada (like...

There are lots of organizations that do various types of work for new Canadians.

Try this to find one in your area: www.canadahelps.org/en/explore/…/new-to-canada/

I personally know of MOSAIC in Vancouver that helps immigrants, refugees and other people new to Canada with navigating the quirks of coming here. That includes helping people find work and learn English, among many other things.

Many organizations are faith-based, but I haven’t really explored that. I do know many of them don’t care what the faith the people they are helping follow.

On a more general note, organizations like the Red Cross will often step in to help refugees, though usually only for a very short (emergency) time.

Good luck, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I might be able to help.

@JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh damn, I totally read your question wrong. I don’t know why looking back at it, but I thought you had asked for helping people specifically once they were here instead of before they got here. Sorry!

You can search under the social services or public benefit categories on canadahelps.org

We had Target for just over a year. They opened a bunch of stores and crashed and burned because the prices and experience weren’t even comparable to what they had in the US. It’s now a case study in how not to expand your business.

These are legal U.S. tender, minted in the U.S. Not common in the U.S. but still valid.

Pay attention to your other coins though. Ecuador does mint its own coins that match the American ones identically (1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 centavos) and also has some older 1 sucre coins that match these 1 dollar coins. Those would not be legal tender in the U.S., I’m pretty sure.

I was just giving some info… I’m not saying they’re fake or anything. I actually found it quite interesting to have the Ecuadorian versions of the coins.

[sorry for the wall of text rant below, I know this is just a comic we’re talking about here lol]

At least in Canada I know this is one of the most important annual campaigns for non-profits to bring in operating funds.

And, the Walmarts (for example) that have a manager that are into the fundraising bring in way more than the ones where the manager doesn’t care… Mostly because the cashier asking greatly increases the amount of donations.

I get that the business doesn’t do it out of the goodness of its non-existent, corporate heart - and gets tax breaks or whatever - but it really does help the non-profits.

If I had my own comic strip, I’d do a rebuttal:

Cell 1: person standing at cash, cashier says, “would you like to donate to non-profit organization ABC today?”

Cell 2: person rants: “you know, this is what’s wrong with the world today. Faceless corporations are acting like charities and taking more of our hard-earned money so they can get tax breaks and not actually contribute anything to society. I’ll donate at home and get the tax break myself, thank-you-very-much!” cashier: “uh huh, that’ll be $23.45”

Cell 3: [6 months later] person sitting at a desk: “alright, tax time, just gotta fill out these forms. Donations? Right, donations, donations… Hmm…”

Cell 4: [shows tax form with a prominent field of “Donations” and a big “$0”]

You didn’t address the fact that this is still one of the top ways non profits bring in funds.

JohnnyCanuck,
@JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s fair, I’m certainly not addressing that.

The comic was about the charity/corporation/individual interaction and I’m just talking about the fact that given the situation they’re in, charities rely on donations in this form.

Is there an article explaining what rule they broke?

JohnnyCanuck,
@JohnnyCanuck@lemmy.ca avatar

The tweet didn’t make any sense to me since it didn’t seem like a developer whining about your policies was ban worthy. It sounds like Epic hadn’t actually broken any rules yet.

EU regulators must feel like they’re babysitting two spoiled brats.

shark'an vs iromnan (sh.itjust.works)

Shark’an is invariably portrayed as the inhabitant or guardian of the red sea to which Iromnan ventures with his companion surfboard. They clash, which leads to the death of the surfboard. The event typically causes the anger of the gods. Shark’an is also attested in other works of Mesopotamian literature. Multiple...
