X-ray results have brought even worse news about my retired service dog’s health. She has very bad cancer, and only has about a month to live. Her hips are also very bad. Shes prescribed pain meds… that’s all we can do for her now 💔

BOTH of my dogs finally have pet insurance! I’m so relieved. I found a much more affordable company with great reviews, so I was able to get a plan for both dogs! There are of course minimum annual payouts and they only cover a certain percentage. Ellie’s plan isn’t as great as Lucy’s, because she’s much older and also has a bunch of pre-existing conditions. It’s a financial stretch for me, but it’s sure peace of mind and could come in handy.

@bmoore123 I went with Fetch pet insurance. I’ve seen good reviews, and I have two good friends who are service dog handlers who’ve had good experiences with them. Ellie will be 7 tomorrow, and their price was so much more reasonable than the other big company I had looked at (Trupanion).

Pet insurance rates are truly wild 🤦‍♀️

My doctors office called, and I do indeed have strep throat (on top of a sinus infection, lol). Already on antibiotics for it. Sure do feel miserable physically.

@bmoore123 Happy birthday, Farley! He’s so cute. Ellie is turning 7 next month!

OMG you guys, this covid is no joke.

And I am one of the lucky ones, got a few vaccines in me before I started reacting to them, was already under the care of an immunologist, and full of the meds they use to treat covid anyway.

I am slowly improving, and was always safe, but hooboy! been pretty miserable.

So please, and be understanding of those of us working hard to avoid exposure. It's justified.

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@vlrny I’m sorry you’re still sick! Yuck.

Ellie is home 🥰 She’s on medication to control stomach acid, an antibiotic and Gabapentin for the next 10 days. The relatives whose negligence greatly contributed to this whole situation thankfully have covered the vet bills (almost $1700 total). It does appear that she will need to be on a specialized prescription food for the rest of her life, and it costs almost 4 times what her regular food did 😬 She will have to be off work for while she’s on the medication, and probably a few days after.

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@vlrny So am I! Thank you 😊 ❤️

Ellie is doing MUCH better, and is coming home in a few hours! She’s alert, has eaten 2 meals today, no more vomiting and is going to the bathroom fine. She will need prescription food for 2 weeks, and medication (not sure for how long, will find out at vet office). It’s still unclear if I’ll have to switch her to a different dog food long term. I think we are okay vet bill wise, because she ended up having a shorter hospital stay.

@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

Ellie has severe pancreatitis, and needs vet hospitalization for anywhere from 1-4 days. We have already paid about $1700, and may have to pay up to an additional $900 depending on length of hospitalization. This is all taken care of, but I will very likely need help if she needs additional medication for at home, or if any other issues come up during her hospitalization. A vet is supposed to call to give me an update on her condition in the morning.

Super happy to say that our consultation went great today, and we will be doing our service dog training with Canine Support Services! Lucy did super well, and the trainer was impressed with her.

A relative is going to pay for two service dog training sessions a month for Lucy! Oh my gosh. I’m so relieved. I’m still solidifying things, but I’ll update when I know more.

I really wish there was a service dog organization that actually met my needs and didn’t have a cost.

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@bmoore123 Oh gosh, I need a bunch of stuff. I need help making her stays more solid, we need to do training on the bus… eventually hoping to take the bus regularly to actually have a mode of transportation for a change. Plus they have access to things like training with and around personal responders, which I don’tI also need help teaching a specific psychiatric task, plus improving her retrieval skills in terms of dropped items, etc. I’m not a very good trainer. 😞 She’s a great dog though

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@bmoore123 There’s a local place that trains for all this stuff, but it has a cost. Two of my friends have dogs from them (one fully trained from them, one pays for training with a dog they got themselves), but they had to pay. 😞

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@bmoore123 Oh yeah 😩 $110 per session

I’m so tired of being scared in my own home, building and on my building’s property. I have to be on constant alert every time I take my dogs out. I never know when he will trap us in or around the building with his aggressive dog. He is doing it purposely. I never know when he will “accidentally” let go of his dog’s leash. I’ve tried so many different avenues, and no one will help. I’m so scared for my dogs, and it is setting back both of their service dog training.

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@vlrny I tried this before in the sense that all of this is on camera (my building has a lot of cameras inside and outside of it, they had footage of literally everything)… when we called they claimed it was an animal control issue and wouldn’t come out. Animal control didn’t come til a few days later, they were told about the footage but unsure if they viewed it or not. I was told they talked to him. They were here another time too, and they just reminded him his dog had to be on a leash.

Frustrating how some big Canadian CHAIN restaurants can’t be bothered to spring for handicapped/accessible door buttons… not cool. It’s extra difficult with my service dog in training in tow, of course. I was worried the stupid doors would hit her, and let me tell you, having a service dog with an aversion to doorways is really inconvenient.

well, was going to go to Hamilton this weekend. Seems there will be a transit strike. Maybe not!

Kaonarose,
@Kaonarose@disabled.social avatar

@bmoore123 Yep, and just as I’m preparing to train Lucy stuff she should know to go on the bus lol. I feel for the workers and their plight, and at the same time, this transit strike is going to screw many vulnerable people over. Things are shitty for both sides…
