Statcounter reports that Windows 11 continues to lose its market share for the second month in a row. Windows 10, meanwhile, is gaining more users and is now back above the 70% mark.
I’m gonna upgrade my setup at some point, so thanks for this. I didn’t realize they had some bullshit like bitlocker in there, definitely going to disable that because I cannot lose some files.
I don’t know how much I’ll need it on a desktop that’s strictly used by me, but I see your point nevertheless. The fact that its turned on by default without user knowledge and that the key is not automatically safely accessible is… That is a whole other level of dogshit, that’s just insane honestly. I’d definitely save it to drive and a stick to be sure, that’s a good one.
It’s not about converting people close to you. In some situations, you’re asking them to install an app just to talk to you, while everyone else they talk to is on WhatsApp. I personally have to use WhatsApp for work and for personal, otherwise I’d literally not get those messages. There’s no option when, if you stop a random person on the street, regardless of what OS their phone is running, and ask to look at their phone, it’s going to have WhatsApp installed. It’s like your phone having email; who the fuck doesn’t have email? It’s the same with Whatsapp, it’s just assumed you have it.
Small phones don’t sell, that’s just the thing. Asus tried for a few years, it didn’t work and now the Zenfone 11 is going to be big again. I’m personally on the other end of it, I’m never going smaller than my current phone (Edge 30 Fusion) because I really like the big screen.
In Finland, the closest equivalent to this is some D list celebrity (so like someone who was in Big Brother or something) performing the ceremony on a cruise to Sweden. There is no direct equivalent however.
Biggest problem for me is that the community I’m most active in (/r/hockey) didn’t even try to move away from Reddit and since that’s where I’m the most active, I don’t make those posts here because I can’t, its just not worth it because nobody will see it. Same goes for some video game communities, they also did not even try to move and some of the devs actually read those niche subs, so there’s no point in moving. I like kbin/Lemmy, but its just not at the same level with some of those subs.
Firefox users are reporting an 'artificial' load time on YouTube videos. YouTube says it's part of a plan to make people who use adblockers "experience suboptimal viewing, regardless of the browser they are using."
It’s literally like that shit from Ready Player One where the guy suggests that you can fill up the VR screen with like 80% ads before the user gets sick from it. That’s what they are doing now, they will push ads until people either stop watching or not enough people subscribe to Premium. The fact that you can’t even skip ahead in a video without getting more ads, even if you just got the pre-roll ads. It’s completely unacceptable and I think that there should be laws that would prevent that type of consumer abuse.
Even if they federated (which I doubt they will do), someone would have to foot the bill for those servers. Same thing on lemmy, someone’s eating the server costs here even if it isn’t a major corporation.
Shit like this is why I got a dumb speaker. It just plays audio, it doesn’t have a battery (meaning that unplugged = zero power), it doesn’t have wifi, it doesn’t have an assistant, it just plays the music I ask it to play via Bluetooth.
It’s the same with messengers, if your friends arent there how useful is that foss messenger really?
This is so difficult. How many people would be willing to switch to Signal or Wickr for one friend? And then what if none of their friends don’t want to switch? And then the friends of those people, etc. Trying to switch workgroups, family, friends and all of their friends as well is a lost cause, it would never happen.
Google what exactly? Specific contract details or bits from interviews which are, in many cases, posted behind paywalls (The Athletic) outside of the little bits that they put on Twitter? Literally just cannot get that information otherwise.
I think I saw one guy on Threads, but he had to stop posting there because simply nobody saw his posts there and there was no engagement from his colleagues.
Again, information I cannot get otherwise. Its only on Twitter, nowhere else. Like if a tweet just said “Everyone from yesterday cleared waivers”, how would I even go about finding that information in such a simple format otherwise? Its just not possible and you assuming like it is just makes you look like you don’t know how the situation is. These journalists just simply have not moved away from Twitter.
You mean I am going to keep on using the only platform these journalists are on to keep up with hockey, the only sport I keep up with? Yeah and that has nothing to do with its owner. If these journalists moved elsewhere, of course I’d switch.
Using a platform where millions of others are as well is not the same supporting someone like that. Even the fucking US government is still on there, do you think those guys support fascism? You just keep sounding more and more like you just think its that easy, its just that easy, isn’t it? Everything is so simple to you.
Well fuck me, why? Why oh why? It’s such a clean and simple app, no weird shit and of course it gets axed. I think I may just stop listening to podcasts then, much easier than switching to an app I have no interest in.
Some people on here will never realize that only paid devs putting in full days will make a platform like Lemmy grow to even a fourth of what Reddit is right now. Part time, unpaid devs will never grow this platform to that size and one way or another, those devs will want to be able to support themselves and that is either through donations or somekind of monetization, which may or may not include monetizing user data. It’s just honest facts that it costs money to run servers and that money has to come from somewhere. It takes time to develop an app and in the case of Sync (probably Boost as well) it’s just one dev and that takes a lot of his time. Nobody would do that amount of work for free.
Just around 24 hours after Musk made his comments, more than 42,000 new users joined Bluesky, making it the biggest signup day yet for the currently invite-only platform that launched earlier this year....
Really liking Bluesky so far, hope it picks up some steam soon. It really is something special and way less confusing (at least for me) than Mastodon.
E: But to add, let’s face it, no decentralized platform will ever replace a centralized one unless something major happens. I just don’t see the mainstream adopting Bluesky/Mastodon/Nostr unless something incredibly drastic happens. As much as I’d love for Bluesky to get some more steam, it won’t at this rate. People want to get on it, but can’t.
