👋Hi, I'm Aaron, nice to meet you!
📽️ I (sometimes) make videos on the internet that vaguely resemble good content.
📸 I also sometimes do little photography experiments.
🐧Of course I run Linux, it's in the name :)
🦣 I wanted to try out Mastodon about 2 years ago, and I ended up here. Never used Birdsite!

:blobwizard: You don't need a $1000 camera or an hour of traveling to take a good Aurora photo.
:ablobcatbongo: You need a tripod, patience, and a decent point and shoot that with a manual mode and RAW output.
:ablobcatwave: Set the exposure time to "forever", the ISO to "grainy" and the F-stop to "eyes dilated at optometrist."
:blobcatsanta: This one was taken in the Chicago suburbs with a tripod and a Canon PowerShot S100 at ISO 80, F2.0, and 15 second exposure, then processed in RawTherapee.

Obviously it absolutely did not look like that in person, but it was still really cool to actually experience an aurora like that right in my backyard.

Sidenote, If you're wondering how to use RawTherapee, all I did was follow the "Basics" section of this tutorial: https://rawpedia.rawtherapee.com/Getting_Started

You clearly live in a better location, my parent's Google Pixels looked like this (Photo from my phone because I don't have theirs readily available, trust me, it only looked a little better):

For the record, here's the JPEG the camera spits out.
This is closer to what it looked like in person.
Still pretty good, but you can get better results if you do it manually with the RAW file in RawTherapee (and it's even better with the lossless 60mb PNG that I had to compress to upload here!)

Edit: Also for the record, all I did was change the exposure curve and apply noise reduction, no color work.

No computer magic can ever fake a tripod and a 15 second exposure unless you essentially AI generate the whole image...

For Americans looking at people posting in Celsius temperatures: don't try to convert, just remember this...

Zero is freezing,
Ten is not.
Twenty is warm and
Thirty is hot
(And forty is DAMNED hot)

And -40 is just -40

Linux /ˈlɪn.əks/
Noun

  1. A piece or collection of software incorperating the Linux kernel; Android.
  2. A piece or collection of software resembling the common Linux distribution; GNU/Linux.

Because a majority of people now use the second definition of Linux, the use of "GNU/Linux" is discouraged as it often comes off as redundant, pedantic, and uninviting, unless specifically referring to Linux distributions that use the GNU Core Utilities.

Notable Linux distributions that do not use the GNU Core Utilities include Alpine Linux and Gentoo in some cases.

I just replaced my Mastodon client's app icon with LocalSend and I've already instinctively opened it twice...
Reminds me of https://xkcd.com/2183/

I'm going to uninstall @moshidon from my phone.
Nothing wrong with the app (it's actually the best Mastodon client I've used :ablobcatheartsqueeze:) Mastodon has just become too much of a distraction.

What in the world is wrong with this machine?

Something as simple as syncthing running, an apt upgrade, or even just doing a dd of a gigabyte from /dev/zero to a junk file can cause the system load to scream up to 10 (quad-core system), and it starts freezing.

Do I have a dodgy SSD???

Update 1: I am using full disk encryption (LUKS)

Update 2: gsmartcontrol output https://bin.benjaminhollon.com/fersimebia

Update 3: I'm going to try copying everything over to a spare SSD later.

@RL_Dane
From my experience, every random issue an os re-install doesn't fully resolve is at least partially storage related.
What does Gnome Disks say about the SMART data?
Also how full are your partitions, how old is the drive, and has there been a recent steady increase in unexplainable buggy behaviour?
I just had something very similar happen and it was definately the SSD.

Full disk encryption seems to exasperate ssd issues...

More reading and writing among other things I guess, not really sure though, just seems to be the case from too little experience.

Do it from a live usb.
Also take backups using the live usb and a separate drive if you still need to.

Fedora's live usb comes with gnome disks, so do many other distros.

Cons of being an at will employee:
You can be fired any time (not if it's discriminatory ofc) :blobcatsurprised:

Pros of being an at will employee:
Two-week notices aren't mandatory; you can just leave whenever :blobcathyper:

This only really applies to specific states in the US. I don't know about laws in other countries.
Also not legal advice.
