👋Hi, I'm Aaron, nice to meet you!
📽️ I (sometimes) make videos on the internet that vaguely resemble good content.
📸 I also sometimes do little photography experiments.
🐧Of course I run Linux, it's in the name :)
🦣 I wanted to try out Mastodon about 2 years ago, and I ended up here. Never used Birdsite!

[Question] If you were buying a well-supported, software-developer #Linux laptop for work, paid for by the company, either in the UK or the USA, what would you buy?

🤔

(pls share for eyeballs and opinions)

@popey
https://starlabs.systems/ is my first pick; they design their own hardware.
https://system76.com/ makes rebadged Clevo machines with a quite nice custom distro.
https://www.tuxedocomputers.com/ has very good higher-end stuff.

@phanpy Is pretty neat, I think I might use it for a while…
I do wish there was a desktop client so I could replace Tuba, but Electron kinda stinks so idk :ablobcatcoffee:

:ablobcatattentionreverse: Today you learned that:

The GNU GPL is not licensed under the GNU GPL or any other license that grants GNU's "four essential freedoms."
It says so right there in the second paragraph:

"Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim copies of this license document, but changing it is not allowed."

There's probably a legal reason for that, but it's still pretty ironic.

Gotta love monitors that sit on your desk, rarely move, and don't have to be thin or light but somehow still manage to come with a separate external power brick like I'm some sort of cable management genius :blobcat_thisisfine:

I wonder what the difference is between when I'm hungry and I know eating would also make me less mentally discombobulated, vs when I'm hungry but otherwise fine and can power thru the hunger pangs til they subside.

these are definitely two different hunger states and I'm beginning to be able to tell them apart.

Linux_in_a_Bit,

@deutrino
That just sounds like the difference between actually needing food vs just feeling hungry.

NIST turns to IT consultants to clear National Vulnerability Database backlog

🤔

"According to the agency's statement last week, it hopes to reach its pre-February processing rate of CVEs within the next few months. NIST predicted it should be caught up and back to processing current CVEs by the end of the fiscal year."

Do you collect searches and results when somebody clicks those "Try elsewhere:" buttons?
If not, you should. It would help you find issues a lot faster...

I've been using DuckDuckGo as my main search engine for a while now. Lately, DDG seems to "correct" my searches. A LOT. I don't know if it's just me or if it's a universal thing, but when I type in a search sometimes not only the results aren't what I was looking for, but I see the query itself has been changed to something I didn't actually search for. It's INCREDIBLY frustrating. I just might have to find a new search engine if this keeps up.

Linux_in_a_Bit,
@Linux_in_a_Bit@linuxrocks.online avatar

@mike
Mojeek is the anti-DuckDuckGo (Bing) of the search world.
It doesn't correct your searches enough.
Honestly I suggest using it anyway, then when something doesn't work, just click the DuckDuckGo button right there on the search page.

That's like the ONE thing that works better in cars. :ablobfoxbongo:

Linux_in_a_Bit, (edited )

@HugeGameArtGD
And if that doesn't work, a little spray paint on the participating cars' doors would probably work just fine ("you should've walked today" etc.).
Certainly would get their message across better than blocking off bike races :blobcat_thisisfine:
