Meltbox,

Are these deaths only in this gang war?

Really puts in perspective how atrocious American cities are for gun deaths…. This is barely the typical first quarter of the year.

Meltbox,

Unless every browser ignores them. Then what they’re going to fine Microsoft, Google, and Mozilla and declare the internet illegal in France?

It just seems so absurd I can’t take it seriously. There’s zero way to make this actually work. If they want to ban websites they’d have to go full China on it.

Meltbox,

Oh my god. Absolute dumbasses at the record companies actively trying to act evil. Barely anybody will stream these and it sure isn’t so malicious of the ‘store’ selling these records is doing it for free.

I mean how many people are actually going to buy these ever again? Also their damage claims are per usual pulled from the oceangate depths of their ass.

If anyone remembers when torrenting was big and the riaa was essentially claiming something like 20%+ of the US economy’s value in lost profits. These people don’t munch on crayons, but they really should start because it would be a more intelligent hobby to take up.

Meltbox,

Interesting. But I’m not holding my breath yet. I’d suspect impact won’t be as huge as it’s being made out to be like a breakup.

Meltbox,

Freeeeeeeeeeeedddddddddoooooooooooommmm

Meltbox,

This is such a terrible application. These things would drain their battery just running the pi and electronics. Why such a high power platform for such basic functionality?

This screams of free money flooding startups. Amateur hour.

Meltbox,

This is what I mean. It’s not like they are running some kind of image processing or literally anything heavy.

Just seems way over the top. Also my bet is it they didn’t bother with bespoke hardware they probably didn’t do much to power optimize.

Meltbox,

But why not an ESP32 or something that’s really well supported but better matched to their use case? Rpi screams ‘I read an article on how to connect my leds to Wi-Fi once’ levels of competence.

But I suppose if it was a half baked grift of sorts then it checks out haha. Even if that grift was more of an egotistical and not intentionally sourced grift.

Meltbox,

I swear they probably followed an instructables to found the startup…

Meltbox,

Yeah they do. The device current issue is one of time. If they coded it properly they could keep the pi asleep at almost all times, but seeing as they used one in the first place I have my doubts.

Essentially it would make the scooter drain from just sitting vs being able to sit for weeks until a rider hops on.

Meltbox,

Yup. This is really the worst part. I am a village idiot. So if i do it at home that’s fine.

But then again the shit I see at work sometimes…

[HN] Will Browsers Be Required by Law to Stop You from Visiting Infringing Sites? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

In a well-intentioned yet dangerous move to fight online fraud, France is on the verge of forcing browsers to create a dystopian technical capability. Article 6 (para II and III) of the SREN Bill would force browser providers to create the means to mandatorily block websites present on a government provided list....

Meltbox,

Yep. I also didn’t think this would work as well as it does. Remarkably good platform so far.

Meltbox,

Yeah and they broke bots which actually were core to certain subs. The quality of say Buildapcsales isn’t what it was.

Meltbox,

The one time congress actually did a case study on drug pricing they found that in all the internal discussions a drug company had while setting the price R&D costs were not mentioned even 1 single time.

So it’s got nothing to do with profit.

Meltbox,

This is actually awesome to see. Sadly the main thing holding Linux back is still just momentum. And for a lot of people MS word. Even if the free suites are pretty good nowadays.

Macron walks tightrope as French police protest challenges rule of law (www.france24.com)

National police chief: “a police officer should not be in prison, even if he may have committed serious faults or errors in the course of his work.” Left-wing opposition blasted government for failing to rein in “a police hierarchy that places itself above the law”.

Meltbox,

That’s one heck of an interesting statement from the police chief. Odd how prevalent this is across the world…

Meltbox,

Looking forward to it!

Really want to pick up some hobby welding myself, you can make so much useful stuff haha.

TIL Alice Walton (Walmart heir) killed a pedestrian in a driving accident and was never charged. She has also been arrested for DUI twice but never charged. (en.wikipedia.org)

The sketchy part is not her not getting convicted. It’s that no charges were even filed. I also enjoyed this bit of info from one of the sources regarding the other DUI incident. Prosecutors in Texas have dropped a 2011 drunken driving citation against Wal-Mart Stores Inc. heiress Alice Walton.

Meltbox,

To be honest I don’t know. I’m continuously surprised by how few politicians and rich people are shot by people they have wronged.

Like if it was your only kid or something I don’t know how you hold yourself back in the face of this kind of injustice.

Meltbox,

Drunk driving seems to be severely under prosecuted for well to do and connected people.

I think it’s changing partially due to body cams now. But it’s still pretty bad.

Meltbox,

The Waltons in general appear to be terrible people as a family. But yeah I remember reading this.

Meltbox,

He is spot on.

Algorithms and AI aren’t even any different. AI is literally a complex system of nonlinear functions. It’s not black magic.

If I wrote a traditional nonlinear alto with computer optimized parameters it only differs from ML models in that it’s less complex. Not understanding your product is not a defense.

Meltbox,

Yup. This seems like playing with fire to me.

Although I suspect that in Wi-Fi frequency bands it would be harder to get caught. You mostly would just be messing up everyone else’s Wi-Fi in that area.

Meltbox,

Honestly despite getting somewhat worse in the newer models I still find them head and shoulders above most other laptops in durability and keyboard feel.

Excited for the new 16:10 ones. Not that I’ll buy them new. Off business lease on eBay or bust!
