Apple plans to update iPhones in-store without opening the boxes
I see the use case for this, but the ability to remotely power up a switched off iPhone, flash some firmware and then switch it off again, all with no physical access, seems… uh, risky? I bet the Cellebrite people are keen to see how this works.

@AMS Only working on devices that don’t (yet) have an iCloud lock would be an obvious thing to include. But the idea of remotely interacting with a powered off device just seems to invite all sorts of unintended consequences.

Just trying to think through how this might work. Can a sufficiently powerful Qi charger work through a box? That would power on an iPhone, and I guess is a worry to anyone who thinks keeping it in a sealed container would prevent that. Then you’d need an NFC or similar trigger to switch it into DFU mode, join some (predetermined?) WiFi network created by the smart charge/flash pad, download the firmware blob and check a digital signature before flashing.

@Bluedepth @dimsimple I’m guessing Lockdown Mode will disable this? But yeah.

MetalSamurai,
@MetalSamurai@mas.to avatar

@richard_merren I mean, keeping devices up to date to prevent zero day attacks is definitely part of that. Apple have a lot of smart people, and the risks seem pretty obvious, so I hope they’ve thought this through and prevented misuse. But if they slipped up…

@ShadSterling @Bluedepth @dimsimple There are definitely Faraday wallets to protect contactless bank cards and NFC passports etc.
You could tuck your phone under your foil hat, I suppose? 😬

This weekend’s YouTube rabbit hole is discovering English (as an additional language) teacher beef videos. English teachers shitting on English teachers shitting on other English teachers. It’s scammers, grifters, pedants, trolls and angry people all the way down. Car crash TV.

And sad for the poor sods just trying to learn English.

Does this mean boycotting ExTwitter is now going mainstream? I presume links to Bloomberg will get shadow banned there from now on for having the temerity to publish this.

Taylor Lorenz on her extremely online history of the internet.

Interesting, but definitely all seems to be from the perspective of a digital sharecropper, trying to make a living on Big Corp’s platforms, rather than as an ordinary person just trying to make friends, watch cat videos and keep up with the memes.

Why would anyone want this, Amazon?

Why would anyone use “biweekly” to mean every 14 days, when “fortnightly” is right there?

Watched this last night. Almost entirely dialogue free, very uncomfortable, wasn’t a huge fan of the ending, but would recommend.

The new local e-bike hire scheme has only been running for a few days and already I’ve passed several of them abandoned on the pavement, miles away from the official racks.

Finished the audio book for The Nightmare Stacks. Weird to have so many places I regularly go or where friends live or work destroyed. Still suffering minor whiplash from the mangling of local place names like Yeadon and Keighley.

Agent Carter Did Spycraft Better Than Secret Invasion Ever Could

I agree with pretty much every word in this. I really miss Agent Carter.

What will the linguists make of the word "unalive" and its rise in these decades of history?

MetalSamurai,
@MetalSamurai@mas.to avatar

@futurebird It’s fascinating that it’s used as a verb to cover both suicide and homicide, but to me has a weirdly passive voice feel to it. Like there’s an absence of judgement about how the state of being unalive came about. Definitely doesn’t mean the same as either “dead” or “kill”.

I'm sorting out some of my old film stuff from childhood... Here's an original, U-rated UK cinema quad poster for Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack (1979). A strange time in cinema history when episodes of American TV shows (in this case, 3 episodes) were re-edited into feature-length films and released in UK cinemas, often during the school holidays.

MetalSamurai,
@MetalSamurai@mas.to avatar

@Richard_Littler That’s around the same time that I saw the Nicholas Hammond Spider-Man re-edited as movies at the cinema.

The Peripheral Canceled After Prime Video Undoes Season 2 Renewal

Damn. Also two other shows I was invested in, and I hadn’t already heard that there’s an unaired Season 4 of Snowpiercer just sitting in WB’s vaults somewhere. I hate this new streaming TV future.
