Proton VPN - No longer blocking malware, ads, and trackers? [FIXED]

[Edit: With guidance from Proton Support, I switched VPN protocols in the application’s preferences menu (protonvpn.com/…/how-to-change-vpn-protocols/), from IKEv2 to Smart, and afterwards I started seeing ads and trackers (etc.) blocked on the application’s GUI again. I’ll post any other relevant info I learn of here.]...

Nelizea,

What protocol were you connected with ?

Nelizea,

That is the issue. IKEv2 has technical limitations that don’t allow the control of such statistics. Try OpenVPN or WireGuard, that should be working.

Nelizea,

Sorry for the late reply, however there is a way. When you put an alias into Trash in Proton Pass, the Alias is disabled SL side. If you empty the Trash, the Alias is deleted SL side.

Nelizea,

Doesn’t ip.me cover it? That page is made by Proton. While it doesn’t have a “yes you are connected to Proton” box, it does show your connection and thus you can deduct whether you’re on Proton VPN or not.

Nelizea,

Removed for misinformation.

Nelizea,

What update? From the app store? Can you add more information?

Nelizea,

Is that happening with all the apps in the app store or only the Proton app? I am asking because the apps are hosted by Apple, not by Proton.

Can you maybe try to deinstall the app and install it again? Does the app store otherwise work for you?

Nelizea,

Can you maybe try to deinstall the app and install it again?

Nelizea,

Proton’s Linux app just sucks and it seems that they’ve made no effort whatsoever to fix this since last year.

This is entirely untrue. The new Linux app, fully rewritten, is currently in beta now:

protonvpn.com/support/linux-prerelease/

Let’s not forget that these “technically-correct” but poorly-worded half-truths are what landed them in hot water back when they were forced to log and disclose a user’s IP address for law enforcement back in 2021.

Beating a dead horse, which wasn’t for VPN (VPN under swiss law cannot be compelled to log), but Mail. That is an important difference.

Nelizea,

All password managers keep data unencrypted in memory. You can’t encrypt the data in memory because then the application cannot use the data while it is running. It’s an universal issue for password managers, and not something that can be fixed.

While you can obfuscate the data, this is really security theater, because it is trivial to reverse engineer the obfuscation. In the future, Proton Pass may also obfuscate, but it doesn’t actually add any security.

If you enable PIN lock, the data is encrypted locally and cleared from memory when the PIN lock is activated. The security benefit of this in the case of a compromised device is likely marginal, as malware on a device would be able to key log the pin and bypass it in that manner. However, PIN lock can be desirable on a shared device (although somebody with access to the shared device could also install a keylogger…).

In the previous version of Proton Pass, after the PIN lock, it can take up to 30 minutes to clear data from memory, while the new version clears it immediately. It was previously immediate, but a code regression set it back to up to 30 minutes, but this has now been fixed. In general, for the reasons previously explained, we would not advise people to rely upon the PIN to secure against malware or shared devices, and that’s why PIN is not enabled by default, as the security benefit is likely marginal.

By the way, to even take advantage of this, somebody would need to have access to the device and the ability to access the device memory, in which case the PIN is not going to be effective because the device is already compromised. Unfortunately protecting against this type of device compromise is beyond the scope of Proton Pass (or any other password manager).

The most important part is highlighted in bold.

Nelizea,

As a person using 1Password and Bitwarden (just bringing that up as people always recommend Bitwarden in such threads), I personally do find 1Password much better, cleaner, easier. The only downside for me is the open source part, however personally I cannot check that anyway.

For me personally regarding Proton Pass <-> 1Password, there are yet too many features missing and I pefer the UI of 1Password as well, especially with nowadays smartphone display sizes and not having to use both hands to search an item.

What is really cool at Proton Pass is the integrated alias feature.

Nelizea,

by far its most underdeveloped service.

This is by far not true, certainly not.

Nelizea,

Thanks! Just as a little side note, Bitwarden offers SimpleLogin, AnonAddy (now renamed) and Firefox Relay integration as well, thus alias creating works with Bitwarden too.

Nelizea,

Not a dev but it could be quite different than fairly similar. The encrypted search makes use of the browser storage. This isn‘t even working on iOS due to limitations.

The team is working on it.

Nelizea,

The bridge adds quite some load to the API, thus more ressources are needed for that feature. This is the reason that this feature is reserved for paid customers. Remember, paid customers are the only reason why a) Proton can keep existing and b) keep offering free accounts for everyone, with some limitations in additional features. There’s no other source of income.

Nelizea,

And despite the fact that Linux is undoubtedly the most private and secure OS, they get the least amount of support.

Yeah the fact that the Linux app is always behind the times kills me.

That is solely because the % of Linux users among the Proton userbase is the lowest, compared to the other OS’s.

Moving other 'my calendars' to default

Hi all, Perhaps a dumb question: I imported my google calendar into the proton calendar. I now seem to have 3 proton calendars (listed as my calendars in proton), but i only want one. The other 2 would then be deleted. I don’t see a way to merge those calendars into the default one. Is there a way, or would i need to...

Nelizea,

A merge function doesn‘t exist, however you can use this workaround:

You can export both calendars as an ICS file, and then import the ICS file from your local disk into your preferred calendar.

Navigate to Settings > Calendars on the Proton Calendar web app to export and import your calendars.

Nelizea,

Can you try following the support article?

proton.me/support/protoncalendar-calendars

Nelizea,

I think the support and you talk around eachother. Proton is working on making it possible to have more than one active subscription per account.

Nelizea,

In the sense that there is not going to be a new plan for now, that is probably correct. However that doesn‘t mean that they are not working on combining plans

Nelizea,

Yes currently you can have 1 subscription per account. Proton is however working in changing that, to have more than one active subscription per account.

Nelizea,

Yes that is all correct. All cryptographic operations happen locally on your device(s).

Nelizea,

They seriously need to up their client consistency game especially on the Linux side of things considering that is about 40% of their desktop market share.

I do not know where you got these numbers from, however the 40% aren’t correnct. The Linux userbase amounts to less than 1%, atleast on the VPN side. I do however think that this number isn’t very different accross all the userbase.

The truth is that we have Android > Windows > iOS > macOS > Android TV > Linux users. And Linux users amount to less than 1%.

That being said, a new Linux VPN client is currently in development and can already be tested out, more information can be found in the support page as well as on a reddit thread. If you do not rely on a kill switch (depending on your threat model), you could already test that out.
