Papanca,

To add: drink plenty of non caloric fluids and keep away from too much UV (use sun screen). And avoid the heat, since older people can’t regulate hot temperatures as well. And, for countries where you can afford it, get medical checkups or go to the doctor when something seems off. In my european country we have certain free, voluntary checkups at certain ages to check for things like colon cancer and breast cancer.

Papanca,

And keep your teeth and gums healthy. Take care of them. Not only brushing and flossing, but don’t eat all day long and stay away from juices and sodas, since they are acidic and wear away the enamel of the teeth. Finally, try to keep your weight in check and eat your veggies (not always the same ones) and some fruits.

Papanca,

Birds have something similar to not drop from a branch while sleeping. That’s why their toes in death are curled together, those muscles are relaxed, so to speak

Papanca,

Unlike my shepherds in the past, at least my new dog (not a shepherd) doesn’t follow me to the bathroom

Papanca,

The first Friday the thirteenth when i was 15 or so. My parents didn’t even allow me to watch the news or any movies aside from a few cartoons, so i was shocked.

Papanca,

Unless you rescue a dog that has been solely toilet trained on a puppy mat. It’s a lot of work to fix it, as i now know

Papanca,

Which they would undoubtedly let the customer pay for when buying their clothes

Papanca,

I love my asics. I can walk longer now, and with way less pain in joints like hips, knees and feet. I really learned that wearing good shoes can make a big difference

    Papanca,

Actually, i have no problems with texting. It’s the meeting in person that i find tiring

    Temperature Blanket 2022 (imgur.com)

In reference to the last post on temperature blankets. This is my temperature blanket for the year 2022. I didn’t want it to be a giant blanket so what I did was took the average temperature over two days for each row. It ended up being a bit smaller than a throw blanket. It’s also evident that my tension got looser over...

    Papanca,

Looks great and blocking will probably even out some of the tension

    Papanca,

Oh sorry, i probably overlooked that it was acrylic yarn. There are still methods to block it, though. You can’t make it hot, but you could pin it all around, spray it wet and let it dry. That could help somewhat. Downside is that it takes some time to dry of course.

    Papanca,

It’s not a dumb question at all. No, if you just wet it and let it dry, it will not keep its shape. I think for that, you have to steam it, but very gently and without overheating it. Acrylic yarn is plastic and it has a memory. If you steam it while blocking, you basically tell it; this is the shape i want you to keep. But i can’t tell you how hot the steam needs to be and the specifics. For instance, i don’t remember if you have to touch the yarn with the iron or just steam it while hovering over it.

Does taking my glasses off to 'let my eyes rest' actually have any meaningful effect? Or am I just making my eyes work harder?

Started wearing glasses full-time a few months ago and I usually take them off during my lunch break because, well I’m mainly looking at my sandwich and I’ve been told it’s good to let your eyes ‘relax’ as such....

    Papanca,

Afaik, to rest your eyes you need to look in the far distance, like the end of a street. For at least 20 sec at a time

    Papanca,

I don’t mind. I understand the enthusiasm since i switched recently (again) too.

As for windows; i think one of the main reasons people switch has to do with how bad windows has become. It’s bloated, it feels like everything is spied on, and in 11 they add AI and not to be helpful to their customers. So, a lot of people will say: hey, i switched to linux and finally, i’m rid of that evil windows. Many people might not know that much about linux just yet, so they are maybe - i’m speculating here - moving away from something unpleasant, rather than switching to linux because of the many advantages.

As for the linux 4 noobs community, i joined but it feels pretty dead and so, i ask my noob questions (apart from trying to do my own research) here, rather than over there. Are you implying that noobs are not really welcome to ask their questions here? It would be fine with me if the noob community was filled with people who are enthusiastically asking questions, but the most recent posts are a month old, so not very inviting.

    Papanca,

Personally, i would prefer it if the linux 4 noobs community would be brought back to life, or if we have dedicated threads here where we can discuss newbie stuff.

If we would go the route of threads, some helpful people who have a lot of experience could decide to help out and others could just skip the thread.

And if people would want a new community, i would hope that it is not called something like ‘ditched windows’, because that sounds like a recipe to make it a community to complain about windows. For me as newbie, i’m looking for 2 things; info and howto’s and suggestions about everything linux, and the knowledge that there are others who are also new and ask things that would be interesting for me as well.

    Papanca,

What i really would love are tips and tricks. I remember another community that started doing that, but after a few times they stopped. Very frustrating, because it was quite interesting to read.

I also like all kinds of discussions about why one chooses this or that terminal, or why they choose flatpak over certain repositories. Discussions about what went wrong and how they solved it (because then you learn where you need to look for issues and what people need to know from you to be able to help out).

Experiences from newbies are nice too; what distro did they choose and did they run into issues.

Sharing interesting websites would be nice as well.

    Just some thoughts.

    Papanca,

I don’t know what you mean with ‘something’, but when i started learning english decades ago (as in; no internet) i had a dictionary on my night stand. I only got it when a word was intriguing; when it seemed crucial for the plot; or when it turned up many times and it started to bug me.

    Edited night stand

    Papanca,

Thank you for your reply, i’m starting to get a sense of how this works in the US

    Papanca,

That sounds like they - democrats and republicans - would not have any incentive to change this by law, to make it more fair…

    Papanca,

I can only imagine, i already feel frustrated reading about this while i don’t even live there!

    Papanca,

That was a very interesting read, thank you. And i really do hope people will succeed in beating Trump. But honestly, the whole world saw what he did and tried to do and still he apparently has a chance in becoming president again, which makes me wonder what these kind of voters want. Do they really want what Trump wants, or do they see a vote for him as a kind of protest out of anger and frustration?

And seeing this kind of voting system in the US, it doesn’t mean half the country is voting for Trump, i take it?

    Papanca,

Wow, only about 50% vote, that is very low. I did read - quite a while back - that they have all kinds of ridiculous requirements to be able to vote, apparently to prevent black people from voting, if my understanding is correct. As for the Trump voters, your description is just about what i expected. I think this is the case in our european country as well; protest voters who vote for rightwing extremist parties.

Thank you so much for your elaborate reply and the links, which i will read, very much appreciated.

    Have a great weekend
