It is not really an alternative. So many people here complaining about quality, and the constant desire for this not to become the new Reddit.
But that’s exactly what it needs to become. A place where mindless users can post the same silly crap every day, without getting shit for it. And without being rattled by entitled mods that feel they should be compensated for doing what they want to do.
Let communities talk and mods just be mods, not critics.
Possibly because many users coming to Lemmy are pissed off by something. It’s not a platform for fun users, but for grumpy old cats wanting their unachievable utopian discussion forum, where all behave the same as they do. ;)
It is just mentioned. Just a description of what happened. What’s wrong about saying it was a white male when it was a white male? Why jump to the opinion that mentioning the gender or complexion has any other purpose than being descriptive?

Leather is only a fetish because some people decided that it is. There is nothing inherently wrong with leather.
Ban leather fetish? You are the definition of ignorance. That is what is hurting the public image. Do you also go to a rave and tell them to dress differently? All that neon clothing is hurting your eyes? Or to any demo with people dressing as unicorns?
You underestimate the public. Who cares about leather? We care about people being ignorant dicks, about people who are obnoxious and about people who are trying to harm others. Not leather.
There is no difference between a business suit, a nipple piercing, a mini-skirt or a gag-ball. The person wearing those are what counts.
People trying to ban others, that’s just sad. As long as decency laws are obeyed, who are you to judge? Fetish only exists because of ignorance. Otherwise, they would be hobbies.
Of course “hear myself speak”. Do you? Thinking in black and white, downgrading people for having values that they grew up with, coining them conservatives, without even knowing what that term means.
When I was a kid, a banker wasn’t even allowed to turn up their sleeves in summer. Tattoos, piercings and colored hair was an instant dismissal. The same conservatives are in power still, and all that has changed. I’ve seen bankers with face-tatoos, braided hair in multiple colors and piercings, being openly gay. Acceptance is already here.
But pride parades are not about acceptance. They are some sort of “in your face, we are here, deal with it” gig. Like street gangs wearing colors. Not hiding. Those things only work when nobody suffers because of them.
That’s how acceptance works. You don’t walk up and ask for it. Acceptance happens by saturation and demonstrating that things are fine.
The problem is, street gangs cause crime and lately, pride people are just obnoxious. It’s not the leather, it’s the people wearing it, and how they behave. Demanding acceptance, even trying to force it. Calling others names and blaming them for all their troubles.
You don’t ask for it. You don’t force it. You INTEGRATE. Bit by bit. 40 years ago gay people were in hiding, pretending to be straight. Not getting jobs. Risking being beat up or being lynched.
Now, you have Trans school plays and teachers that are openly gay. The last two generations are imprinted by the fast pace of the internet. That is a new thing, people do not change that fast. But is that respected at all? No.
Internet and mobile phones weren’t a thing until I was twenty-five. Things changed over decades, not years back then. What you call conservatives are simply people not catching up that fast. You’ve never seen a real conservative. And by the way you are talking, you must be believing that the world has always been like it is now. But it changed in the last 25 years like it didn’t do since the industrial revolution 250 years ago. You seem to have no idea how far acceptance has come and how ridiculous the term conservative is. Show me a single thing from 25 years ago that’s still the same.
I did walk up to plenty of so-called conservatives, and I always got their attention, and often their approval. Not always. It is about the way one does it. Being condescending, demanding, negative and juvenile won’t help. Playing a role or fighting other people’s fights also doesn’t help. Fight for yourself and help others do the same. Individual by individual, that is how things work.
Is this only about full-time jobs? How about location? General living wages were a terrible idea. Not everybody needs one. Some just want an easy gig to finance unimportant stuff.
Back when I was a stoner, I loved sorting bottles in the grocery store. Three days a week, two hours per day, I could show up high. Then minimum wage raised the wage from 7.50 to 13 euros. The job got cancelled, and the cashiers have to take turns doing it. Which they hate.
Those cashiers have to do it, because they need the job. They do need a living wage. I just had too much time. There are many menial jobs like that. Or were. They are now done by people who already had other jobs. Making them work more for the same money, having fewer people with a job.
The dude making a round taking out trash? Yeah, that’s also the cashiers now. Making the job a true shitshow.
Living wage for full-time jobs, that I can understand, kinda. But there are tons of menial jobs. I worked a lot of them, until they disappeared. None of them are worth that much money. Many are just a service the company provided. They don’t anymore. And everybody is hating it.
One can’t make a living selling ice cream cones. But one can save up for some holiday or a car doing that. Well, can’t, anymore. There simply are no ice cream stands anymore. Just bullshit prepackaged ice cream.
Some would say that most of the spending is based on greed. Individual salaries doubled to tripled in the last decade, with their head earning three quarters of a million now.
It was a tenth 15 years ago.
They started out right, like they all do. Then personal money catches up.
Gluttony and materialism, I’d say. We all could have rich and wonderful lives. A few percent of us want more. And they try to make the rest think that that’s the right thing to do for everyone, even if that’s technically impossible.

Man, the people still have the power. That’s why political systems try to separate us as best as they can. Creating diversity instead of unity. Everywhere.
If we wanted, we could change the world within a month. We just don’t want to. Because we are fed the most stupid stories and ideas, as many as possible. From diets to skin colors to countries being evil by nature.
Most of humanity are just normal people. A few million of them are megalomaniacs. And they managed to make us all believe that they run the show. But we are running it for them. :)
I don’t know. The French revolution? Hippies? Homeless communities? Revolutions have been done countless times, and they always started with no real chance to succeed.
What do you want me to say here. A plan to save the world? I have no idea where you are and what your situation is. That’s the point.
We have all the networking, but nobody connects. The world is in the best spot ever, technologically, but we use it to divide. Where are you? What’s you biggest issue? Let’s pool together and see if there is a way out?
We all divide into groups, splinter-groups and even smaller units. Especially so since about 20 years ago. We should unite. How hard can it be?

But after reading the initial article, yeah, probably a predator. Still. A thorough investigation should take place. There are well-meaning and involved people who don’t have an interest in abuse. It’s still possible the daughter was sick of her hyper-involved dad, and planned the whole thing. :')
I’m not gravitating to that first at all. The other side of the story has been already told. I’m just saying what if. And things like that have happened. Why woulda nyone jump to the conclusion that it might be my first thought? It’s my last one. But one that has to be completely discussed and dismissed. Innocent until proven guilty. You are right in principle. New words can pop up. Them being accepted however is not just a matter of a few people using them and saying that it is so.
It’s about usage and being accepted in larger groups or areas. Language is defined by what’s surviving a generation or two. Everything else is slang.
