Agreed. I’m old enough to remember when you could have a rational debate with conservatives on a foreign policy question or government budget priorities or economic policy. But how do you argue with someone who believes that millions of illegal votes were cast in 2020 or that Jews secretly control the world financial system or that white people are the real victims of racism?
You can’t argue with someone who lives in a different reality than you do because there are no common points of reference. It’s the most insidious effect of over-exposure to conservative media and I have no idea how people can be deprogrammed.

In addition to a large instance being less likely to shut down and (presumably) having more resources, there’s an additional advantage to being on a larger instance: you have a more comprehensive “All” feed. Since federation with a remote feed isn’t established until (IIRC) someone subscribes to it, an instance with a larger user base should contain more subscriptions to a wider variety of content. Of course, not everyone will like that and you lose out on Beehaw content if you’re on the two largest Lemmy instances, but I think it applies in general.
I’ve used Lemmy Account Settings Instance Migrator, which migrates your blocked communities and settings as well as your subscriptions. It worked for me, but YMMV as the developer says it’s alpha software.
Interesting article. I live in the Portland/Vancouver area and never gave much thought to the generic Geeps running around in local and yard service. Now that I know they’re geriatric Geeps I’ll pay more attention to them.

I’ve been to Bishop, but never to the airport. I found a photo of the baggage claim on GIS, which brought me to a Japanese travel blog: https://npo.mirokuyamanokai.org/2022/08/24/37887 - plus Google translate, of course.

I’ve always used Xubuntu. It’s reasonably lightweight and the Ubuntu USB creator does the heavy lifting for creating persistence. The only downside is you have to have a running instance an Ubuntu flavor (bare metal, VM or USB) to use the tool.
Hey @ken27238, would you please consider cross-posting some of your military aircraft photos to !warplaneporn? Would love to have more people participating in the community.
Most WWII fighters were basically large engines with the smallest possible airframe fit around them. The only armaments typically carried were guns, so they were light, fast and nimble.
So the work I do is 100% remote now. I moved to Southern California because of an industry that has in part moved to remote work. My only requirements are a temperate climate, nature access and hopefully a blue-ish state. Is there a place out there that makes sense financially? I’m hoping to buy a house less then 500k. I...
Aside from the social issues mentioned by Jim, if you’re looking to move somewhere on the I-5 corridor be aware that Oregon’s reputation for ceaseless rain is, in some ways, well-deserved. Fall through spring is very cloudy and rainy. It gets gloomy and if you suffer from SAD it can be hard on you. On the other hand, summers are beautiful, with mostly sunny and warm days with the occasional heat spell.
Being a fairly large state with varied terrain, there are several climate zones:
Summers are hotter on the I-5 corridor south of Eugene.
The coast is cool and cloudy year-round, and rainier than the I-5 corridor.
Areas east of the Cascade Mountains are much drier, with hotter summers and cold winters.

No extra steps, just update as you normally do. The only thing you’ll notice is that more packages are updated. The updates you get between point releases are for security issues and high-impact bugs. Lower priority bug fixes and updates are rolled into the point releases.
