Will the world ever stop being anti-intellectual?

One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...

I think the claim that the world is anti-intellectual is somewhat biased. I don’t know if that’s a sampling bias, a cognitive bias, or some other kind of bias. But one way or another, I feel like you’re overblowing things.

Can acidic and carbonated drinks corrode aluminium bottles?

I like to put lemon or vitamins (those tablets that also create fizzyness) in my water and have been wondering if it is problematic to do so in my aluminium drinking bottle. I wouldn’t normally think so, since soft drinks also often come in aluminium cans, but I’m not sure. Are aluminium salts even unhealthy?

Aluminum soda cans have plastic linings, because the acids can dissolve the aluminum. What that means for your drinking bottle, I don’t know.

This is why pirates were wearing eye patches, to be able to enter the hull of the ship and see immediately without lighting up a candle. Fire is not a good idea inside a wooden ship filled with black powder.

This is one theory for why pirates wore eyepatches. We haven’t found any historical evidence to confirm it. Meanwhile, we have at least a few documented cases of pirates wearing eyepatches for protecting a damaged eye.

If I were writing the Star Wars movies with the benefit of hindsight, I would allude to the fact that Vader seems much more aggressive when dealing with Leia compared to other Rebels, like something about her Force aura is triggering to him.

OptimusPhillip,
@OptimusPhillip@lemmy.world avatar

This is not true. There are a litany of laws that capturing a wild duck from a public park would be a violation of, so don’t do it.

Do you pirate? And do you justify pirating? i.e., what is your piracy philosophy?

Well, my friend, he’s kinda poor he can’t afford some books and some streaming services, so he pirates. He pirate books, audiobook and videos and other stuff. Sometimes he buys books he likes a lot out of loyalty to the author (yeah, I don’t understand it either), he likes to read physical books, but yeah, if he hates the...

I pirate content that is not in print within my region. Fan subs of Japanese TV shows, emulated games for discontinued consoles, things like that.

As an American who has gotten very used to metric units in studying engineering, the general rule I picked up is that you typically only change units every three orders of magnitude. So 8 decameters would typically be expressed as 80 meters, maybe 0.08 kilometers. Decameters and hectometers are a thing, but they’re not common units. Even centimeters don’t see much use compared to millimeters.

How much you wanna bet this’ll get turned into an AI voice video?

As an American whose only knowledge of UK government comes from sporadic episodes of Politics Unboringed, my first thought would be to replace the Minister for Women with a Minister for Gender Equality. They would have all the powers and responsibilities of the Minister for Women, and also gain any powers and responsibilities that a hypothetical Minister for Men would need.

  • If there is a need for a Minister for Men, then that need is met by the Minister for Gender Equality
  • If there is no need for a Minister for Men, then the only thing that changes is that the Minister for Women has a new, less controversial title

Sounds like a win-win to me, but again, I’m a dumb Yank lol

What rock have you been living under? I could not escape this movie when the discourse was at its peak. I can absolutely believe it was one of the most talked about movies.

[Hypothetical] What would have happened if the US Supreme Court had arbitrarily declared Donald J. Trump the winner of the 2020 US Presidential Election? Constitutional Crisis?

Assuming everything else was the same, but we branch off into a parallel universe where the US Supreme Court just ignore facts and arbitrarily decided by a 5-4 vote (assuming Roberts side with the 3 liberal justices, because that’s probably the most realistic scenario) that Donald J. Trump is the winner of the election. What...

OptimusPhillip,
@OptimusPhillip@lemmy.world avatar

But they didn’t decide it directly and arbitrarily, as OP is suggesting might have happened. The power to elect the President is in the hands of the Electoral College, and the House of Representatives. The most that a Supreme Court can do is tamper with the process of tallying the popular vote.

Could they not afford The Wells Fargo Wagon?

Because the onus is on the farter to say something courteous. Because we, for some reason, decided that a involuntary, natural bodily function is rude.

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised to be reminded he was still alive. I keep forgetting it was his brother that died, and not him.

Does anyone else act more 'human' when solving captchas?

Whenever I have to do a captcha where you must select all tiles with bicycles, I know I can just click through super fast, but I feel like that might make the website suspicious, so I purposefully slow down like “Geez, this is a melon-scratcher!” or click and then unclick a tile like “whoops, silly me, thats an umbrella...

OptimusPhillip,
@OptimusPhillip@lemmy.world avatar

Stop, you’ll give the bots ideas!

In all seriousness, I never fake anything. If I see a bicycle, I click it. Plus, I never need to fake my pauses, since the ones I get are actually bitch hard lol

No, this is a myth someone made up to scare people. There have been no recorded cases of cockroaches living in a human penis.

Bit of a stretch, but Rick Riordan’s mythology books (Percy Jackson and its sequels/spinoffs) tend to involve magic school-type settings.

OptimusPhillip,

IIRC, Trials of Apollo went from 2015-2020, so the timelines do add up. He’s also done similar books for Egyptian and Norse mythology (Kane Chronicles and Magnis Chase)

I’d heard of it, but only ever as a joke. Sometimes, someone online will see a purple rhino and make a Death to Smoochy joke.

Not normal. See a doctor, at the very least get the serious problems ruled out.

There’s definitely some Reddit communities I miss. In fact, I recently redownloaded Reddit on my phone to get my fix. Granted, a lot of the communities I miss are NSFW anyway, so Reddit doesn’t get any money from me using them.

It sounds like OP has heard people say “carbon negative” to mean that something outputs more CO2 than it consumes, and vice versa, which is contrary to how I hear the terms used.

Not a dentist, but the reason dentists gave me for doing it in that order is that bacteria and plaque build up a lot while you sleep, since your teeth are just kind of sitting there doing nothing. So I guess waiting until after breakfast is just an unnecessary delay.

I can’t seem to read the article, so forgive me if they answer this question, but how would a gun work in space? Most firearms I’m familiar with use oxidation reactions to propel ammunition. Were the shells filled with self-oxidizing propellant, or did they just use a completely different system?

OptimusPhillip,
@OptimusPhillip@lemmy.world avatar

I guess today is a learning day for all of us! I knew gunpowder contained nitrates, but I didn’t realize that was its purpose, or that it allowed it to work in a vacuum.
