Hackable cheap hardware:

K-Mart has these lightning bolt faux-neon LED thingies on clearance for $12. They're built with addressable WS28xx LEDs and so can be easily chopped and used with WLED et al.

You'd think with all the AI hype there'd be some comment from the FTC about nvidia holding a monopoly position. Guess they're a bit too busy with the 'affordable luxury' handbag problem.

@jpm Next you'll be suggesting the ESP32 doesn't need an onboard magnetometer.

any of you nerds seen an ESP-based relay board that'll handle 24V AC and also take input from a physical switch?

PCOWandre,
@PCOWandre@jauntygoat.net avatar

@decryption @chendo Just a word on the Shelley running on DC -- I found it was pretty sensitive to interference. I installed one to switch some decorative neons (12VDC input) and had to add choke/caps to avoid the Shelley randomly rebooting.

PCOWandre,
@PCOWandre@jauntygoat.net avatar

@chendo @decryption I read "damper" and "24VAC" and figured electrically noisy / inductive HVAC parts.

PCOWandre,
@PCOWandre@jauntygoat.net avatar

@decryption @chendo Hard to say much more without knowing the full setup and story.

PCOWandre,
@PCOWandre@jauntygoat.net avatar

@decryption @chendo Hah, that reply does seem to be about on-par from the hass forum.

A rough wiring diagram would be helpful.

e.g., is there is a single 24V control voltage to open the damper or a pair of switched lines for open/close?

Ass-uming the setup of three wire dampers and the wiring running direct from the control panel to each damper, I'd look at locating the relay controls near the damper and just building the control panel UI hardware where the current setup is.

Some example parts:

To get 24VAC to 5VDC to run a classic 5V esp+relay board:
https://www.analog.com/en/products/ds2482-100.html

Dual relay with wide DC input, just add bridge & a cap: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004466280920.html

Classic ESP01 modules; these are pretty cheap and reliable: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004090736903.html

You can configure esphome with a switch interlock so it doesn't try to drive the open and close control lines at the same time.

If you've got at least three lines running to each damper site, you can re-use one of those to provide a direct signal from the control pad ESP to the relay ESP so button presses can work when the HA/wifi is down.

I like this shot I took just after sunset on Saturday - my new iPhone does a great job with after-dark photography compared to the previous one (which was five years old).

This sculpture is a tribute to the Great Petition, an enormous scroll of signatures in favour of women's voting rights which was presented to the Victorian Parliament in the 1890s. It's located just behind the Parliament building.

@timrichards Aah, I've seen that petition. Was always a popular item on the repo tour.

    @decryption They're absolutely free. Zero cost. He'd like to suggest you'd be doing him a big favour by clearing space in his garage so he can put more power tools in there. He's had them there for some years, so I don't imagine they'll be going anyway in a month.

    PCOWandre,

    @jpm See, now I have some extra justification to pick up an ultrasonic cleaner. I usually just remove the handles from the portafilters and then dump them in a solution of espresso cleaner and hot water for a long soak. Or, err, put them in the dishwasher, which I know is probably evil but does work pretty well.
