What the absolute fuck is it with people trying to drag American tipping culture into Australia?

The Sydney Morning Herald published an article about hotel stays -- plainly NOT US-specific -- and includes gems like "It’s customary to leave something for the housekeepers at the end of your stay but the considerate guest will leave a little something each day as the housekeeping staff are often on rotation."

Either they're just mindlessly republishing offshore content with no editorial view to the local market, or they're trying to slowly turn Australia into a hybrid model wherein we have one of the highest minimum wages in the world PLUS a tipping culture. Arse to that.

@resuna It's been getting really bad here lately for pushing tipping -- POS terminals that default to 20% tip; stupid QR mobile ordering that gives the option of tipping or "I don't like the staff", etc.

@resuna Sure, in the US, I understand that tipping is factored into the entire economics of hospo. But that isn't the case in Australia. Min casual wage is just under $AU30/hr these days.

@resuna @mjm Much as I love fibre channel, the cool kids these days use infiniband and fancy converged ethernet for their fuck-off storage these days.

@resuna If it was a PC, I could think of many. Given the fruity nature, I'd say the biggest would be hardware codec boards, SDI video interfaces and perhaps SAS for connecting external tape/small arrays.

Meta is not gonna buy Mastodon or any server, this is based on absolutely nothing and untrue.

Yes, some of us indeed got contacted by Meta/Insta because they are working on a new social platform (this was in the news) and they are looking into joining the Fediverse (Mark Zuckerberg also told this in the recent podcast)

SO.

This contact was about a "heads-up" for a potential big platform to join the network and not for a "take over".

Wow, I can't order coffee from Airjo, my usual supplier because they're using some Google Captcha bullshit that has hit me with about 20 in a row and no end in sight.

I wonder how many small businesses end up losing sales because they outsource to these random crapware options and have no idea that their shit is broken?

As instance I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.

I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.

The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.

@jwildeboer Argh! No! Anybody SHOULD be able to DM someone unless actively blocked; that's providing the function of communication.

Halting legitimate communication in the name of anti-spam is never the solution.

If you see an account named thegx.ca/forum (thegx@…) pop up on your servers please suspend it. Some bastard has been setting up spam accounts all over. I’ve lost count of how many I’ve blocked and it’s getting annoying.
