@awi 's EM-Bird can measure sea ice thickness from a helicopter: today Janna from our group learned to operate the instrument over the Jade Bight (North Sea). Great weather, but sadly, 0 cm sea ice! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thread radio frequency interference (RFI) ๐Ÿงต
During the last winter we had to filter out large parts of our SMOS satellite thin ice data due to radio frequency interference (RFI): the grey ocean area in the image.

PolarBremen,
@PolarBremen@mas.to avatar

This was due to frequency interference mainly originating from east Ukraine and Russia as shown by ESA https://www.esa.int/Applications/Observing_the_Earth/FutureEO/Preparing_for_tomorrow/Managing_frequencies_for_Earth_observation

PolarBremen,
@PolarBremen@mas.to avatar

Luckily is not alone: NASA's can compensate for most of the gap. This map shows the same day 11 Feb 2024 for the merged SMAP/SMOS thin ice thickness.

Did you ever wonder how @awi 's airborne laser scanner data can help classifying sea ice surfaces from high-resolution data? Can the satellite ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ data tell us whether there is open water, level or deformed ice? Check out this new paper! โžก๏ธ https://doi.org/10.5194/tc-18-2207-2024

Disaster movie night of our group! Watching such a film (sun eruptions, "interesting physics", volcanoes, shift of the Earth crust...) with a bunch of environmental scientists: some discussions are inevitable ๐Ÿ˜‰

Melt ponds on sea ice have a strong impact on the partitioning of solar radiation at the surface in the summer. Check out our new paper, where we describe how we retrieve melt pond fraction from optical satellite data (https://tc.copernicus.org/articles/18/933/2024/) & the final product on our website: https://seaice.uni-bremen.de/melt-ponds/

The dancing iceberg is visible in our sea ice dataset (https://data.seaice.uni-bremen.de/databrowser/#p=sic), but beware: this is the largest iceberg of the world, not a few meters of sea ice!

When we arrived the sun just came back above the horizon. Now we already have several hours of daylight. The C-SCAT radar is up and running, measuring microwave backscatter of sea ice and snow. Temperatures dropped below โ€“30ยฐC, brrrr ๐Ÿฅถ

In a case study from the expedition we explored the impact of surface changes (spoiler: glazing, i.e., a thin ice crust at the top of the snowpack) due to warm air intrusions on concentration retrievals from space.๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ https://doi.org/10.1525/elementa.2023.00039

Exciting update in Earth Observation! ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ The European Space Agency launches the project, a 4-year initiative to advance technology.
We will contribute to this international project led by MET Norway, with new algorithms for thin sea ice thickness, ice type and snow on sea ice for the upcoming CIMR satellite.
