I'm still in the process of moving old saves off my Reddit account and found this gem today. Reddit HQ is coping hardcore, I can't image regular users actually care about this.
Reddit used to be a great platform to discuss some topic and get different points of few in a friendly but factual manner. However, slowly it seems like the platform has become a lot more like Facebook, where it's been invaded by toxic people that are constantly looking for opportunities to shit and hate on others....
What a bizarre take. No I don't think this is true at all, but I do think it's an interesting read into the assumptions we, as people, make of faceless strangers on the internet. We invent faces for them that fit the stereotypes we have in our head.
Its a blend of critical mass and the userbase. Some Reddit subs have subscriber counts in the millions, you're inevitably going to reach a lot of eyes on your comment if you post in the right thread and not get drowned out. Additionally, high quality comments and positive discussions take a lot of energy and thought to write out, while low effort brigading, trolling and regurgitating sarcastic jokes are quick and easy to do.
The larger subs have a high amount of low effort trolling, where the good answers tend to get lost in the noise of funny jokes. The smaller subs often have a high level of autism and people that take their passions way too seriously. They can get triggered over differing opinions or nit pick a misplaced comma for way longer than reasonable. Good positive discussions still exist, I think just due to the sheer size of Reddit now it just gets a bit hard to fight through the noise before getting downvoted into oblivion.
Right now on Lemmy, we've managed to escape the bots, jokers and trolls of the masses and are reaching crowds of techy headed first adopters that are much more willing to grow the community and are used to forums and threads. It's a wonderful thing to be a part of and something that's become quite rare on Reddit. It's very refreshing to be able to just comment and know the commenter will see your answer and even reply. This makes it much easier to put some effort in rather than chuck out a cheap joke for some upvotes.
Most androids allow you to lock auto rotation from the swipe down menu. Have a look at your quick menu above your notifications. If it's not there, look for an edit quick menu button nearby, and you should be able to add a lock orientation button to your quick menu manually. If you can't find that, check the app Store for a forced override app that adds the feature for you.
I just noticed their instance pop up in the feddit browser and they are huge and established. Who are they? Whats the vig? Should I join some of their communities or do they have a particular agenda they're pushing?

Yeah I agree. I think being able to tweak a personalised scraper as an opt in service per community could work. Some subs just won't work for this, like askreddit and Eli5, but niche communities, news communities and information communities. I would be happy just seeing the top 2 or 3 posts of the day for some, and for world news for example, only the posts that pass a certain threshold of upvotes in a certain time or against the subs size, to make sure the real news pops up quick.
We should not let people take advantage of the situation to back stab strikers. We should discourage this behavior, and show anyone who does this that it will not be taken kindly....
Honestly just let Reddit cannibilize itself and stabilise into whatever it wants to become. Getting angry because a few hundred million people have a hundred million opinions and takes is a fool's errand.
Why don't you just focus on enjoying Lemmy and finding a new way to integrate Reddit into your life (or out of it).
Hello! I've recently been getting into bird watching, and would like to start photographing more of the birds I see. I have been getting some good shots with my camera through my office window, but if I want to do more than that my equipment currently is pretty limited....
People always think spending big on the longest lens is the way to go, and while a long lens is great, birds can often be unexpected, and zooming to close sometimes ends with cropped wings and shakey shots. 300-400mm seems to be the sweet spot for me. But work with what you have! Go find birding areas where you can get a bit closer, hang out in bird hides, crop in a bit more until you get a nice lens.
A good tripod is a worthy investment for any photographer either way.
I think a gimbal you may struggle with, birds are unexpected and fast moving and zooming in and out, moving all that glass, coupled with needing to reframe accurately will make the gimbal very hard to use.
Rather look into saving up for a new camera? Doubling your megapixels and getting built in image stabilization and better autofocus will knock anything a zoom lens or a gimbal could achieve. Why not have a look at best wildlife camera reviews, stick to a crop sensor though it's better for zooming and lighter weight gear.
Also don't forget you can rent longer lenses to play with on camera outing days and shop second hand.
Yeah, kinda. I think Reddit has its place and always will. I don't realistically see hardcore adoption from niche subs like South Africa.
I think now's a good time to make the ones that are vocally pissed off aware of this communities existence. Or even cross post the best content from here directly or vice versa, bring the good posts here - both direct links and links to the comment threads. I think the best way forward is to marry the two and not try too hard trying to replace the Reddit sub.
Maybe here, we can focus a bit more on different areas, like a South Africa news community hub. South African YouTubers, local streamers and podcasts weekly updates, cool reads and resources. Things that don't necessarily need huge comment chains to thrive, but still useful to keep a feed for but otherwise get lost in the noise over on Reddit. This could be a place for the best ofs.
The black out is ending, and a few subs are having discussions on whether to open up again. Why not use your old account and hop over and paste the direct link to your community in the replies to people that are supporting continuing the black out so that they know where to find alternatives....
I would like to see something a bit different here to Reddit's sub. I expect I will still pop back and forth, but here could be a nice place for actual discussion, as well as a resource for good articles, news, weekly South African streamer/podcast/YouTube updates and things that don't necessarily need a critical mass of followers while this community is still small.
Did you find a great potjie recipe? Share here. Did you discover some great local music, or know of a cool play on circuit at your theatre? Do you have a good solar install experience and want to share your research for prices and further reading? Do you follow a weekly podcast? Share the new episodes when you listen! Did you go on a roadtrip and want to give us an itinerary blog post run down? Yes please!
As for behaviour, let's promote discussions and fleshed out replies. Let's avoid sarcastic one liners and low effort jokes. Lets treat each other like neighbours riding out the same storm. Be courteous, understanding and helpful. Let's share our discoveries and add Reddit to our repertoire. If you continue to use Reddit, bring us into the loop of the best bits so we can pop over and read the thread. Lets be the best of, inner circle. Free if racism and hate, and happy to share the good parts of being South African.

Why are conversations on Reddit often so hostile and toxic now days?

Can you Stop Auto-rotate on Android?
Kbin always rotates horizontally even when that feature is globally disabled. Any way to fix that?

This is just hilarious.
What would you think about bots that repost content from Reddit?
All the content, none of the Spez? Or, is it better if Lemmy stays distinct?

Opinion: anyone who takes over a sub reddit because original mods closed it in protest, should face community outrage

Just a thought: Does anyone else feel like we need to round up our lost friends on reddit?
The post on the rules got me thinking about this....
