This is the only game to have a permanent shortcut on my desktop.

I play it with some modern tweaks and mods. It’s a sure way to get my quick dose of gaming rush.

Subset Games created two amazing games: FTL & Into The Breach

I’m not sure if this counts as a “patient gamer” because I played them to death years ago…but I’ve been playing both again recently and they’re just perfect little games with a ton of replayability. They’re not retro (FTL 2012, ITB 2018) but they’re old enough to regularly go on sale which is great!...

I hate strategy games but I love Into The Breach. It’s a perfectly executed game packed into a single screen.

You’re right, that’s probably why I love it. I’m a big fan of puzzle games (Portal, Talos Principle, Qube).

You seem to be missing 2 Unlimited and Ace of Base.

I used to despise a lot of stuff by David Bowie, David Byrne, Sting, Led Zeppelin. Then I grew up.

Achievement unlocked.

If you can fix it you unlock another one. If you manage to boot the system without using a rescue USB pen you unlock another one.

Once level up enough you’ll be writing a GRUB replacement yourself. Now that would be a massive achievement.

I’ve just built it from source to check it out.

Looks great, all the included apps work fine. I seem to only be able to open one app at the time and can’t find any way to close it or change to a different one, but that may be a problem on my setup.

I still haven’t tried any 3rd party apps.

The damn thing Just Works™. That’s why the developers aren’t being pestered. It’s a pretty great piece of software.

Every couple of years I install other desktops to check out what the cool guys use nowadays, then go right back to XFCE.

It’s like having a hot cup of tea on a cold day while sitting in a comfy chair by the fire with your slippers on.

Whats the best Universally usable CRT Monitor for computers all trough the 80s and 90s?

With my little Computer Collection ever growing, I think its time to get myself an actual Monitor to use these Machines. So im wondering, what Monitor has most if not all Connection Types and modes of operation to be compatible with most/ if not all Computer from the 80s till the 90s?...

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

I remember a sepia monitor being used with an early IBM PC clone, it was not black and white or amber, and it was not an anti glare protection. I remember that detail because the phosphor tint was very different from the standard black and white TVs of the time.

I can confirm they existed but any other details have long left my memory.

How else would one motivate itself to learn about grub, boot partitions, UEFI, MBR and all the other wonderful crufty technologies involved in starting operating systems?

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

There are resources out there to learn exactly what’s going on, and the process is not too complex.

I’ve recovered a bunch of nuked MBR records and broken boot partitions myself, and maybe things UEFI added some complexity, but it’s not hard if you have a live USB ready and know the appropriate conjurations.

Most of the fun comes from self centered arrogant companies that make monocultural software, blatantly ignoring that other OSs may already be installed.

Lazy people tend to be creative people, which is good, especially when confronted with boring activities.

I’d solve it in hardware, maybe an ESP32 dongle with a mic pretending to be a keyboard.

Seriously though, sounds like you need a more creative or fulfilling job.

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

If it works it ain’t stupid. 😄

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t get me wrong, but please start using LVM volumes, ZFS volumes or BTRFS subvolumes instead of partitions. We’re not in 1995 anymore.

I know a lot of you come from a Windows background so you’re used to juggling partitions with all the hassle that entails, but if you put a bit of time towards learning LVM you’ll find that you can stretch and shrink volumes to your heart’s content.

You can do neat tricks with mirroring, stripping and other RAID levels, mix and match disks and more.

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

The only 2 scenarios where I can see problems are: old distros that must have a boot partition or outdated installers that will not recognize LVM volumes.

Nothing wrong with that, it’s a great song.

Quazatron,

Exactly. Buying gives you a small dopamine bump, but it doesn’t last very long. The downside is that you spent money that could be better used elsewhere, got another trinket to crowd you out of your house, and probably distracts you from healthier or more fulfilling activities.

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what I did.

On their site you can order a fully customized machine and they’ll even install Linux for you.

I ordered a full AMD laptop with a lot more RAM by saving the Windows tax.

They are solid machines. I just got a Thinkpad P1 Gen 6 from work (1,8kg with a friggin 880 gram 230 Watt power supply that I will not have to carry around, fortunately) and it is great.

Can you tell excel sheets which were created using a pirated version of MS Office?

My friend works for a company which requires her to use Microsoft specific application, she didn’t really want to switch to Win 11 and choose to just use Wine Linux package and install a 2016 version of MS office on her Linux laptop. That’s all well and good, but this company she is working for servers other clients at...

Quazatron,
@Quazatron@lemmy.world avatar

She should abide by the company rules, use company provided software and follow company policies if she likes working there.

Otherwise she should move. Bypassing the rules is very unprofessional and can get you in trouble.
