From what I’ve heard, the Steam version also lacks DRM. Once you’ve downloaded it you can close Steam and just launch the game with the exe. Obviously GOG or Steam is still handy for updates.

I link my GoG account to Heroic Launcher. It works just fine, updates included, store front included. I’m on Nobara Linux.

I don’t know what’s available on the XBox platform, but I would recommend quest and expansion content to introduce people to how mods enrich the game. I would immediately suggest Wyrmstooth, it is an expansion scale mod with dozens of quests, it’s excellently voice acted and slots into the main quest of the base game.

I would also really recommend installing the latest release from Beyond Skyrim. For players used to the base game and it’s expansions, the content of these mods will show the degree to which the game can be pushed by passionate modders, without stepping away from the lore and feel of the original.

Once they get their beak wet in content modding, hit them with the soulslike. Darkend and Vigilant are fantastic. While Darkend tells a discreet story, Vigilance is a Souls inspired take on the deep lore of the Elder Scrolls, largely set in Oblivion.

You could go on and on, there’s so much out there. But that’s what jumps to mind.

While true, remember that every war crime is committed by some Russian in the field. Fuck Russians.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

What about haggling it down to every Russian in military service or currently participating in the industrial or logistical services that support the genocide effort against Ukraine? I understand the difficulties of widely assigning blame to a population, it clashes very heavily with my beliefs regarding a fair and open society. I personally worry that the price of our distaste for going “all-in” against the invasion, is paid by the victims of it. Are the Russian citizens living in the occupied territories and Russia proper also victims? They probably are, that’s a tier two issue though. It’s very similar to how there is value in understanding the causes behind a serial sex offender, abuse, untreated mental health issues, things like that. While there is value in trying to address those issues, the direct damage to society first has to be addressed.

Anyways, I’m rambling, but I guess my point is that everything within the reasonable boundaries of the generally accepted rules of war should be done to drive the occupation out of Ukraine, as the people there pay a daily price of murder, torture, rape, and actions of ethnic cleansing. After that, there’s a discussion of the degree to which brainwashed soldiers and civilians supporting those actions are culpable.

Dragon Age: Origins walked so Baldur’s Gate 3 could dash (www.techradar.com)

Baldur’s Gate 3 isn’t the first successful attempt to marry cinematic aspirations with the traditional branching narratives and simulationist world-building of CRPGs. 2009’s Dragon Age: Origins had a very similar mission statement, offering a spiritual successor to BioWare’s earlier Baldur’s Gate titles long before...

Some would even say, Divinity: Original Sin 2 walked so this could dash. Now that I’ve started playing this game it feels so much like that game, just better and more polished and fleshed out. My friends will either buy it or go mad from my constant pestering.

I think that news organisations should create their own distribution instances. The BBC has started to set up their own Mastodon server. I would definitely prefer to be able to create my own news feed, direct from source, and selected for greater criteria than how many rage clicks a headline is likely to garner.

Globe editorial: Justin Trudeau needs to make housing a primary federal responsibility (www.theglobeandmail.com)

There are about 16.3 million homes in the country. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. last year calculated that, for prices to moderate, 5.8 million more are needed over the next decade – that’s 3.5 million on top of the 2.3 million that would otherwise be built. Look at those numbers and wonder why the Prime Minister held a...

I’d say defense is looking like something that needs some real investment in the coming decade was well.

I’m one of these stats, I switched to Linux as a daily driver on my gaming setup a few months ago. I kept the windows drive installed in the box, but it’s way more lonely than I thought it would be.

The concern is based on industry trends, it would definitely worry me seeing language that vague that can be used to trim the work force.

I also had no idea that this was the meaning. Since I electrocuted myself with a fork and an outlet as a child I have the cool feature of being undead. Dope.

I was watching the drama around the nerf patch with a little amusement. It’s like people don’t think that they will slow the game down to start creating space for monetized ways to speed it back up. They knew they couldn’t really just release it with the same framework as Diablo Immortal, they need to ease the player base into monetized progression.

Blizzard is a great example of the concept that, when someone shows you who they really are, believe them.

Issue with filtering

I have recently been having an issue where filters are applied, not by me, while I’m browsing in Connect. Entire communities are showing no posts with the message, “Empty because all posts are being filtered”. There are no filters turned on in the settings that I can see. Many comments are also hidden due to filters,...

This was actually the answer. I hadn’t manually blocked it to my knowledge, but lemmy.world was on the list along with a news instance and one other. No clue why, but thanks for the comment.

I had this a few versions back. I tried clearing the cache, but for some reason only removing Connect and reinstalling it solved the issue.

Grim Dawn's 1.2 Patch is coming Summer/Early Fall. Testing begins this Summer (forums.crateentertainment.com)

Grim Dawn version v1.2.0 is going to be entering the public playtest later this Summer with an expected release in the late Summer/early Fall. This update is, to put it mildly…a big one. We have gone through literally hundreds if not thousands of data entries to bring you quality of life improvements and breathe some fresh air...

I personally rate it as the best arpg currently available. It has huge amounts of content, gear, build variety, multiplayer, endgame farming options, and modding. It is also zero bullshit, buy the game and get everything. The expansions each add transformative gameplay and well crafted content at least as polished as the base game. Over the years I’ve gone back to it again and again, 1437.4 hours according to Steam.

I think I paid $34 for it on sale. Incredible value.

At least that’s my take.

I recently switched to Linux for my daily driver. I picked Nobara. It installed, detected my card, and installed drivers. Pretty straightforward. That said, performance isn’t the same. I have just been playing Elden Ring and I am getting the fps, but there’s some stutter and screen tearing even with VRR active. Also, ray tracing isn’t a default, you need to add some stuff to your Steam launch.

Overall if you are looking to switch, get a new drive and start Linux on that. Keep your old Windows setup. At least that worked for me. Now I only boot Windows to mod Skyrim since I haven’t gotten that ironed out in Linux.

Well, we could certainly find out with a 3 minute search. Here’s a good summary, four year report on Syrian refugee outcomes.

Questy,

I thought of Skyrim, maybe that’s a mod. I don’t know anymore. Pretty much any property the archer is the upgrade though. I’m thinking the frightened skeleton with an amusing accent is a tier I haven’t hit yet…

I’m over here trying to avoid buying the Front Mission 1st: Remake solely because of nostalgia. This isn’t helping.

Our group uses Roll20 character sheets on tablets around the table, they’re really handy for managing all the buffs and math (Pathfinder 1e). Still rolling dice and using minis. That’s the right level of digital stuff for me.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not knowledgeable enough to have a clue about the original question since I’m pretty new to Linux overall. Just wanted to say that I selected Nobara for my gaming PC and it’s been a pretty smooth ride. My windows drive is second in the boot order and is probably starting to feel a bit neglected.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

I think you need to take the monetization into account as well. The game was a complete mess. At $20 you could maybe get away with saying, “aww, nice job for trying, I hope you learned stuff for next time!” This was a full price game, they knew what they had, this was an attempt to claw money back with a shovelware release.

I’m a little bit over the idea of feeling bad for employees at studios that are predatory and anti consumer. If there are talented and motivated creatives as we like to think, moving on from these companies can help us get great indie games and reshuffle talent in the overall industry. Bad studios and publishers going down is good for the herd.

Questy,

This is it. I think it’s an effort to conform to Reddit terminology.

Threads may actually hinder widespread adoption of the Fediverse

Okay, so right now government agencies, schools, and small business often use Facebook or Twitter for their web presence rather than start their own websites. For a few days there, while Twitter had the login-wall up and was rate-limiting, we had some serious problems wtih Amber Alerts, weather notices, safety notices and other...

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know enough about the Fediverse to have a really educated opinion. At first I found instructions to block it, but then I thought, why? I basically never use Mastodon, when I left Twitter almost no accounts I was following came along. There’s just no connections there that make it a Twitter replacement in my personal case. Looking at the threads idea, of mainstream Twitter users that I used to follow go there, can’t I just follow them individually while remaining safely tucked away on the server I chose?

I may be misunderstanding, but isn’t that how things will theoretically work?
