Unity cancels town hall over reported death threats (www.theverge.com)

The Unity pricing debacle has taken an unfortunate, dangerous turn. In a new report from Bloomberg, the company has reportedly canceled a town hall meeting due to what the publication called credible death threats. According to Bloomberg, Unity CEO John Riccitiello was set to address employees Thursday morning, but the...

You should sort of expect to get some strong reactions when things are difficult economically and you make a statement saying, “sorry peasants, I need a shareholder bonus so your livelihood has to go. Also, fuck you.”

If the threats are to him, dunno, he’s done amazing harm. I’ll just say jury is out on how appropriate they are in his case.

I am using Nobara, which is a Fedora based gaming distro. I definitely do not have to reboot for updates to software outside of system updates to the OS specifically. Updating Discord, Firefox, Steam, Heroic Launcher, Signal, etc does not require a reboot. Something sounds amiss. I am running straight Fedora on my Surface Pro and same story there, basically restart for system upgrades only.

This feels a lot like the release of Diablo 4 and it’s positive effect on Path of Exile. People get a new game, they are disappointed, they try an established game and get what they thought they were buying originally.

I’m mostly a newbie to Linux, I’ve been using it as a main gaming rig for several months and only Nobara. I hear often that AMD is hassle free, but I’m using Nvidia and honestly I’ve had no roadblocks. I started with a 2080ti and have since moved to a 4080, no hassles. There is a built in updater and it automatically downloads the newest driver packages. They are always a version or so behind the latest Windows set but meh. Switching on gSync was as simple as toggling VRR for my 144hz monitor.

The one thing that I needed to look up was getting ray tracing running. There was additional stuff I needed to add in Steam (copy paste from the post I found), and then RTX was up and running.

Like I say, I definitely don’t know better than the people saying AMD is a smart choice, but I don’t think people necessarily need to worry that their Nvidia system is a roadblock to switching to Linux.

I am, yes. Are you referring to the disappearing mouse cursor thing, because that’s really annoying, but I hadn’t seen any mention of it being linked to Nvidia. It seemed more Proton related. I tried several fixes I found and none worked. There was a few suggestions to switch to XOrg (?) But when I tried that I was locked at 60fps and couldn’t use VRR.

Anyways, I’d say that’s been my most frustrating issue.

I always marvel at how Grim Dawn isn’t in the conversation. It’s easily top tier, has no microtransactions, is single player offline, but also supports co-op multiplayer. It features a full cosmetic system that is entirely in-game with no cash shop nonsense. There are so many skills and builds with an outstanding itemization system. Robust crafting system. Repeatable end game challenge content.

Also, it is just recieving another huge free patch, and another full expansion has just been announced.

It took me forever to actually try it, I thought it was going to be janky indie stuff etc. I’m closing on 3000 hours and still dropping back in with new build themes and ideas. I paid $35 for that 3000 hours in a Steam sale.

But yea, Last Epoch is ok I guess.

Edit: a word

Edit 2: just to add since I saw a comment about multiplayer, there is a community run seasonal ladder League as well. Grim League, for those interested.

Espionage can also encompass acts of sabotage, there are ways this could qualify if it was American forces affected. It’s also a glaring example of why many countries maintain state share in major defence companies. No idiot scrolling conspiracy theories on Twitter should be able to not only breach operational security, which he clearly was since he knew the operation was underway, but also sabotage it.

I believe this is a demining effort. The Ukrainians have been using an innovative method of targeting mines. They said they would fly over mine fields in the early evening after sunset, the miners retain the heat from the day and can be seen on thermals. They are using the heavy mines to provide sufficient force to detonate nearby mines. Analysis was skeptical that it could work, but we’re seeing video now and it’s a pretty cool idea.

Questy,

I hope that still qualifies as a joke in a couple months.

Just to add to this, I haven’t had much issue with my Nvidia setup. I selected a Fedora based distro called Nobara. It has a tool that popped up on first boot and guided me through the few clicks it took to install drivers for the 2080ti I had then. I have upgraded to a 4080 since and it was seamless. My driver’s are updated via the Nobara update manager and are about one revision behind the latest available from Nvidia.

I also heartily endorse the idea of a second drive. For me the old one is my windows install, which I almost never boot to, though it’s nice to have my old Skyrim install with it’s 900ish mods still intact. I’m still pretty new to Linux, but I’ve had a really good experience with Heroic Launcher, which I just for non-Steam games, mainly GOG stuff.

I was gonna say, I’m a landlord and I work Monday to Friday… and I rely on your rent check.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

I think it’s the “said no land Lord ever” bit. There’s a lot of investment property owners with hundreds of units that can be shady AF. It’s just tough to be the " I can handle this mortgage if I get a basement suite rented out and work really hard" and get lumped in.

It’s a bit of a grey area honestly. I believe I saw that this UAV can carry a 10kg payload. In contrast to Storm Shadow/SCALP EG, which delivers a 450kg dual stage warhead, it’s hard to classify this directly as a “cruise missile”. It’s possible that there will eventually be a settled terminology for this classification of range and payload that makes more sense, since the use case and application are very different than traditional cruise missiles.

Reuters: US to send depleted-uranium munitions to Ukraine (kyivindependent.com)

In a significant development, the Biden administration is preparing to ship armor-piercing munitions containing depleted uranium to Ukraine, marking the first time such weaponry will be sent to the country. This information was revealed in a document seen by Reuters and independently confirmed by two U.S. officials.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not even really news worthy, it just has the word “uranium” so it generates clicks. Depleted uranium rounds were also supplied with the Challenger MBT from the UK. It’s just part of the kit.

Critics are mostly positive on Starfield, but not unanimous: From 10/10s to 'cold, lifeless, and uninspired' (www.pcgamer.com)

Starfield is here, and after dozens of hours floating in space our reviewer Chris Livingston liked it—but didn't love it. "Starfield is Bethesda's biggest RPG ever, and it shares even more DNA with Skyrim and Fallout 4 than I expected—but it ultimately falls far short of the greatness of both of those games," he wrote in his...

The polish is maybe better than expected, but certainly you will encounter numerous bugs that you’ve seen in previous games. Same engine, same issues. Crazy physics, glitched conversations, that sort of thing. The spread is interesting, I watched a few reviews today and it seems the most positive reviews think the game is fun, and breeze post the usual Bethesda issues. Like they sort of expect that so ignore it. I found this review has some more in depth information about the actual issues.

Personally I am getting the Bethesda vibe, glitchy, galaxy wide, centimeter deep. If modding is open and free though, it could be a really great experience down the road. It’ll be on my Steam sale watch list.

I don’t think anyone is happy that this was is going on. The reason I’m happy to see Russian casualties it’s twofold, the war will not end until the Russians have faced such devastating loss of life that they destabilize the Putin regime, and the myriad war crimes are being committed by Russian service men. Death, surrender, or retreat. That’s it, the Russians serve the cause of genocide and have to be expelled from Ukraine. Sure they have families, that’s too bad, Ukraine is the victim. Kill Russians until their families start to care, though that may not be possible.

I looked into it a bit, found a version of Fedora called Nobara. I bought a second m.2 drive and installed it. I almost never boot Win 10 anymore. The only gaming issue I have is anti-cheat not supporting it, come on Marauders, you look cool and I want to play. Also, some modding in things like TESV is a journey. Honestly though, simply using my rig feels better, faster, leaner. Gaming is great, Nobara has a setup wizard for my nVidia card as well as my XBox controller. It really isn’t hard to switch, I just thought it would be before I tried.

There’s bugs and glitches I’ve had to troubleshoot, but whenever I find myself annoyed, I just think about how many glitches and issues I had with Windows. Nothing is perfect, but Linux gaming is pretty good.

The… horror…

I’m sure there is some cool technical stuff going on here, but I have always been confused as to why anyone wants to have their game simulate the symptoms of a concussion. Then again I am a lens flare tolerator, so what do I know.

I’m glad to see the scenario is being planned for, but it seems like it doesn’t include credible reform around our defence budgeting and procurement. Many Canadians will say that it’s impossible for us to defeat a possible US invasion, and that’s true. The thing is, invasions often don’t happen in the first place when the cost is judged to be too high. I have been watching the developments around the possible procurement of up to twelve KSS III patrol submarines from ROK, that is exactly the type of program that has real value in deterrence. The presence of a credible attack sub fleet in the Pacific would present a risk beyond simple combat losses for the USN in a theoretical conflict, given the stand-off with China the loss of every ship would be felt in tilting geopolitical balance as well as just material and human casualty. It’s just one example, but I would love to see a clearer plan for the military and it’s mission going forward.

On a side note, I would be interested to hear what Canadians think of continuing to have no nuclear deterrent. The aforementioned KSS III submarine can carry ballistic missiles, 10x VLS on the block 3 I believe. Another option may be something akin to the French ASMP system, or even free fall bombs compatible with the F-35 platform. The Canadian military did operate nuclear weapons in the early cold war, but has not had any in commission for decades. It is an interesting hypothetical to look at a pact of, for example, Canada, Japan, and ROK (lots of political difficulties between Japan and ROK I know) coming together to quickly build and deploy a second strike capability. I have thought about our stance on nuclear arms quite a bit having seen the damage being inflicted on Ukraine. I think if a referendum were to be held I would probably vote to acquire them, I wonder how others feel.

That’s understandable. I think my take on Galaxy has always been that it’s just a utility for managing your library, because they don’t do DRM on any games they sell, they don’t need to have a client like Steam does. That’s a big reason why I don’t have an issue with their client Linux support as their client isn’t a requirement to use your library of games. I will also say that Heroic runs better than the Steam client for me. I get a lot of weird flickering and stuff with the Steam launcher. Additionally it downloads some games insanely slowly. I have tried different servers and a number of the fixes I’ve found online to no avail. I bought BG3 on Steam and ended up waiting overnight for it to download. Heroic doesn’t have that issue at all and can take advantage of my connection speed. Obviously those are issues that don’t affect everyone though.

Questy,
@Questy@lemmy.world avatar

I really wish I could figure out the download issue. My connection:

I have tried a few solutions I’ve seen in various Steam forum posts, and asked for advice on the Discord for Nobara. I’m a Linux newbie though and I don’t have much knowledge to sort stuff like this out. I have also been having the disappearing cursor issue in some Steam games. Again, can’t track down a solution that works, though I’ve tried a few things. My overall experience with Linux has been great, and I almost never boot Windows anymore, but there are some issues for sure.
