I had planned to take the direct train Antwerp - Courtrai - Lille on Friday, but somehow the train Mouscron - Lille doesn't show up anymore in the Hafas planners (it does on oui.sncf!). Does anyone know if there are engineering works?

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon Another story for

The trains Mouscron - Lille are missing currently in Hafas.

At the end of my project 2022, I made a top 20 problems to fix

Now three and a half are fixed 🙂

Irun-Hendaia data is now in UIC Merits, meaning now only 2 France-Spain borders have data problems rather than 3. Although Irun-Hendaia is probably the most important fix

Explained in this blog post 👇
https://crossborderrail.trainsforeurope.eu/another-crossborderrail-success-timetables-for-irun-hendaia-euskotren-are-finally-in-international-timetable-searches/

@jon Good news that it appears in Hafas planners now. I never heard about UIC Merits before, but wat an insane prices for small-scale developers

Ah. Queues not only for London, but for public transport tickets too 😡

Tip: even if you’re only in Paris once in a while get a Navigo card. Machines to only recharge those have no queues!

Navigo recharge machines

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon @wrzlbrnft Usually it is possible to buy one without queuing. The strategy is not to follow the signs. Just walk in a random direction until you see a correct ticket machine, because there are plenty ticket machines at the stations in Paris.

The only regional reduction card that used to work for me in SNCF Connect - BFC 26+ - now appears to be broken as well

Pic 1: it tells me my reduction is applied
Pic 2: it doesn’t reduce the price 🤷‍♂️
Pic 3: check on the dedicated TER page on the SNCF site and the reduction works

SNCF: a railway company incapable of getting even the basics to work for regular travellers

Toot explains what each pic depicts - Pic 2

@jon For me the HDF reduction card actually reduces the prices in the north of France on oui.sncf.

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon I just added it manually first during every search, but after adding it in my account it does automatically. It even understands that a passenger traveling with me gets 50% discount when I add a second passenger without card.

I’ve been working on this on and off for months now, but I think my research listing the world's is for the moment complete

467 towers in my list (of which status unknown 31, and destroyed or never built 42)

Of the rest, 268 are to be found in Google Street View, 126 are not

And of the towers still likely standing today, 358 are replicas, 25 resemblances, 11 derivatives

Many but not all mapped here https://umap.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/eiffel-towers-derivatives-and-replicas_1006050#4/52.11/16.13

Next: complete the map 🙂

@jon I can send you some in China from my last trip. I need to find the exact locations from my GPS tracks, but I can manage that if you like.

Departing Montbard for Paris this morning. Then onwards to Bruxelles. Not a regular thread today - I’m going to - I’ll post using that tag

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon what would be the costs of other options increasing freight capacity in Europe with 15%?

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon Yes. Locomotives for Germany only are probably the cheapest electric locomotives one can find: only one category voltage (15 kV) and only one signalling installation (PZB/LZB).

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon the large costs of a locomotive are not the bogies, the mechanical brakes, the steel and aluminium. All other parts of a locomotive require additional equipment or development for different European countries.

Hmmm 🤔

This one had passed me by in December

Renfe claims it will run Marseille-Lyon-Paris this year, indeed even in time for the Olympics https://www.varactu.fr/renfe-lance-des-trajets-paris-marseille-a-grande-vitesse-pour-2024-details-et-impacts-a-decouvrir/

The idea would be to run this with Talgo Series 106 trains, but currently those are only approved in Spain (although approval for France is planned, but is delayed)

If approval is fixed, can they then really start up in just a matter of a couple of months? Enough staff, drivers etc.?

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon Would Renfe see using the S-100 trainsets as a back-up option?

LOL 😂

Berlin to Rail Baltica via Kostrzyn and Olsztyn

Freight, maybe. 2030 or so. Maybe…

RensBloom,
@RensBloom@zug.network avatar

@jon nothing wrong with using the route via Frankfurt/Oderbrücke (no sarcasm this time). The Ostbahn has more potential as a backup route than as the main route.

@jon I am sorry for my sarcasm

RensBloom,

@jon The worst thing with such crossings is when you need to cross the track to catch a train, but a stopped freight train is blocking the crossing.
