Rentlar,

Treat this Republican caucus like the baby nursery it is. They aren’t here to govern anyway, let them cry and have their tantrums. When they’re ready to pay the bills they agreed to and be the grown-up Representatives that they’re supposed to be, then let’s talk.

House GOP Unveils Budget With Trillions in Cuts to Medicaid, Food Benefits, and More (www.commondreams.org)

House Republicans unveiled a budget blueprint proposing trillions in spending cuts over 10 years, targeting steep reductions to Medicaid and food assistance programs. The plan seeks $2 trillion in Medicaid cuts and $800 billion from SNAP. It also calls for establishing a commission to propose changes to Social Security and...

Rentlar,

I don’t want to sign in to my browser, simple as that. I tried Firefox maybe 5 years ago and I simply liked it better.

Chrome’s manifest V3 announcement means I’m sticking with Firefox.

Another country has called Xi a 'dictator' and China is not happy with that description (edition.cnn.com)

China has lashed out at Germany after its foreign minister called Xi Jinping a “dictator” and summoned Berlin’s ambassador for a dressing down, in the latest flaring of tensions with a western democratic power over how the Chinese leader is described overseas.

Rentlar,

I commute to work everyday but I’m lucky that I can do it reasonably by transit or biking.

Saves tons of money on gas, insurance, maintenance and only costs me about 120 CA$ a month! It’s not just the emissions savings!

Rentlar,

A giant rift splitting the world into two might get the world to cooperate for about a month before people start complaining, followed by rich people and state rulers starting to focus more on how they could possibly enrich themselves from this.

A High Priority for Moving Away from Lemmy

Several months ago Beehaw received a report about CSAM (i.e. Child Sexual Abuse Material). As an admin, I had to investigate this in order to verify and take the next steps. This was the first time in my life that I had ever seen images such as these. Not to go into great detail, but the images were of a very young child...

Rentlar,

I am very sorry you had to go through such a terrible experience.

It is my sincerest hope that you will be able to find a workable solution to this problem, from Lemmy or elsewhere.

I am (and have been) okay with admins taking any action necessary to accomplish the goals of the Beehaw project. So removing image hosting, implementing lemmy-safety, restricting federation severely, do whatever you need.

And please, also do whatever you need to care for yourself, including if it means needing to take a break from the site.

Rentlar,

Whew! All clear, it’s a meme. Pack it up, people.👮‍♂️👮‍♀️

Rentlar,

If there was ever a time to get rid of “tiered(more like nerfed) benefits for new hires”, it’s now. Stop playing the employer’s silly game meant to divide unions. Corporate can run all the PR campaigns they want, play all their usual dirty tricks, delay tactics and politician “influencing”, if the union holds strong they will get a good amount of their demands.

At the end of the day, the only people out for workers are fellow workers and strong unions empower that.

Rentlar,

If you feel like you miss the old Reddit webUI while on Lemmy, try the mlmym frontend some instances have enabled. old.lemmy.ca, old.beehaw.org as examples. I don’t know if lemmy.ml has one.

Rentlar,

Well, if the years of study, understudy and residency living broke and getting nickel-and-dimed by everyone and everything wasn’t enough, now Americans can come out with a crippling debt several times that takes another bunch of years to pay off, hooray!

Beehaw on Lemmy: The long-term conundrum of staying here

Yesterday, you probably saw this informal post by one of our head admins (Chris Remington). This post lamented some of the difficulties we’re running into with the site at this point, and what the future might hold for us. This is a more formal post about those difficulties and the way we currently see things....

Rentlar,

I am well aware of the post requesting moderation changes from a few months ago, and on the informal post I suggested the AutoMod tools people have began developing could help. However, hearing the myriad of other issues you’re facing, it does sound as though my suggestion would be a band-aid solution at best to a system that need changes from almost the ground up, but perhaps it could buy time to get the other changes developed.

Whatever direction your team decides to take Beehaw, I will be(e) happy for you, even if I don’t follow it to the new service.

Rentlar,

Your conduct here is indicative of why you might not have been accepted into Beehaw or had mod action taken against you. I can understand your frustration, but federation (as it is right now) is a two-way street: The servers share posts, but users are expected to behave according to the rules of the server they are posting to.

You are capable of not posting in Beehaw, and you are welcome to block Beehaw communities as you wish, if you don’t like Beehaw’s rules, mods, or expectations we have on your behaviour.

Rentlar,

I’m a big proponent of federation and the Lemmyverse. While it would be sad for me to see Beehaw leave ActivityPub, I’ve always said that the admin team should do what they think is best for themselves and Beehaw and I will respect such decisions.

I probably wouldn’t make a new account on another service because that would require a new app on my phone, but I’m OK with that if the idea of Beehaw prospers in another space.

@PenguinCoder @admin If I may suggest something on Lemmy as a stopgap measure, Beehaw can enlist the help of one of the AutoMod programs of Lemmy, so that any comment not on an approved user or instance list are removed on the specific “safe-space” communities. It might take some testing/tinkering but this may give you some of the granularity in moderation that has been requested.

Rentlar,

I’ll admit the wording of the post made me react as if these potential changes were imminent. I will respect any decision the admin team makes, and I encourage you to continue to stick to the core ideas of Beehaw to which you’ve written extensively about, while being able to balance your own lives and mental health.

The idea I’ll throw in the ring is to introduce one of the Automod programs (example), which can help keep the designated safe-space communities more tightly moderated, and address some of the issues of moderation granularity. For example, a user/instance whitelist could be instated as to who can post to the protected communities, with all other comments removed. An application process can be instituted to add to the whitelist.

Rentlar,

I don’t this is an extreme take. Lots of Lemmy users would be sad to see Beehaw leave even if the reasons for leaving are understandable to them.

For me, the value of Beehaw was that there was a place on the internet where people could converse with mutual understanding and without judgement. I think such a space still exists here, but has faded a little when mixed in the context that Lemmy as a whole has gotten a bit more combative and falling into the same ragebait kind of traps Reddit conversations tended to go.

Through Beehaw I also became more knowledgeable in the LGBTQ+, disability, neurodivergence and feminism spaces, just by reading the posts and only occasionally adding a comment seeking better understanding, to which my questions were answered openly and honestly. I don’t want Beehaw to grow just for the sake of growing, but having Beehaw around I think will help internet users at large be able to learn about and sympathize with these causes simply by being there.

Rentlar,

Damn I’m curious, how much are prunes compared to laxatives, in the US?

Rentlar, (edited )

Yeah that’s interesting to know. I haven’t delved too far in the article but I thought the gut health-related social media would have suggested foods like prunes, beans and other foods that make you shit more than it would recommend medication.

There are plenty of options that are part of a healthy diet that could be filling or as part of a snack.

P.S. A one month little ceasars pass (if I lived in the US) would cut my food budget by more than 75% but I’d gain 10lbs of fat every month.

Rentlar,

Rentlar,

I mean it’s a tracker, after all… naming it “Privacy Sandbox” doesn’t change what it is. It’s as much use as a privacy tool as a wrench is for sewing.

Rentlar,

You’ve got a good point, but it’s still evident from the article that Musk believes in a giant load of nonsense, is rash and impetuous, and has no idea how to take care of a company and its people, even if it was supposed to present his characteristics in a positive light.

Rentlar,

Don’t repost my comment onto github issue 317, I’ve commented there already.

A tagging is something that would be very nice to have and I’m in full support of it. Anyways here are the parts that I’d like to see implemented:

  • Communities can have inbuilt tags that apply to every post
  • Users can add tags of their own to a post
  • There should be reasonable limits to how many tags can be placed and federate (I suggest 5 of each type)
  • Communities should optionally have a filter list of what tags are permitted to be assigned and anything outside of that is discarded from the post
  • Instances can maintain a list of “popular tags in the last day” etc. (a /trending page)
  • The endpoint for aggregating local, subscribed and Fediverse posts by tag is a big feature and should be prioritized. e.g. server.com/t/gaming
  • An endpoint for filtering posts by tag is desirable: server.com/c/community/t/discussion for example. This could be implemented similarly but separately as a flair, possibly.
  • Tags should be a separate field entirely to the post body if possible, otherwise they should exclusively be written at the end of the body, to avoid parts of the body text incorrectly picked up as a tag
  • An instance’s slur filter should apply to the tags
  • Users should have the option to not display tags
  • Backwards compatibility doesn’t have to be perfect but should be kept in mind (e.g. can the tagged and untagged versions of lemmy still federate, etc.)
  • How tags on Lemmy will federate and display on other ActivityPub servers is a consideration.

I’ll add: I think having a limit on number of tags, not just the number displayed is important, to ensure people actually curate their topics correctly, it limits stupid tags like that you’d see on tumblr and it prevents bots that tag everything with 100 tags from appearing everywhere.
