This is very exciting! Excited to see how extensive the renovations will be (ex, will they be like walnut st with its grade separated buike lanes, or will it be like 6th st with jersey barriers/flexi posts)
I cant help but think how incredibly soul crushing it would be to commute all the way to chicago every day… even from the sturtevant station, its a full hour train ride (on-top of just getting to the station.)
Sucks for the people adversely affected though… that a rough surprise…
Very cool! That road always felt excessively wide for the limited traffic it gets. I hope the traffic calming is a success…
With that said, a few things pop in my head looking at the plans…
1- im curious why they are only going across half the viaduct…
2- i appreciate the protected bike lane, but i feel like this change actually makes bicycle movement a bit more confusing here… specifically around the roundabout… the jersey barriers seem to really obscure the bike lane’s entry/exit point… i hope they provide clear lane makrings to show the intended bicycle movement
To add onto that, i know theyre just following existing conditions, but this is a prime example of how anytime the road configuration gets even the slightest bit complicated, they consistently just abruptly end the bike lanes… always found that super frustrating as it is super stressful.
3- the sidewalk here is a multi-use trail with (for me at least) confusing signage… i wish they would add curb cuts at the ramp & mark the intended HAST path better
Very exciting news! Its been a really exciting past few days nationwide with all the rail corridor announcements & im excited that the wisconsin routes were also selected. I really like the approach of branching the hiawatha to green bay and madison… it should really make milwaukee a bit of a (regional) train hub
All the recommendations & presentation material are here as well as a survey and other contact info.
Its actually a really cool change that (IMO) will really benefit the city. Went to the open house yesterday & was impressed. As OPs article mentions, it really focuses on encouraging small scale multi-family dwellings like duplexes, ADUs, townhouses, etc.
I always enjoyed the aesthetics of this building… i know most find it ugly/bland, but ive always enjoyed the large brick massing… understandable to see it go considering its condition though.
I just hope whatever they replace this with is of the same (or greater) density… I feel like this site deserves way more love than a generic 5/1 or a suburban 4 floor office can provide. The building is currently 11 floors, i would personally like to see (at a minimum) an 11 floor structure take its place.
I appreciate the focus on stormwater contamination, but they make the renders look like a park, which i feel is extremely disingenuous…
There is similar infrastructure under the marquette interchange, which is an absolutely awful place to be… it is such a hostile environment that paths through it have big signs saying “watch for falling debris”.
Add a station & a bunch of high density development in the parking lot and you have a great neighborhood with lots of potential.
With that said, i feel like such a station would be better suited for a commuter rail system, but id love a station there regardless of if its amtrak or commuter.
I feel like the whole “form a committee to study redevelopment of the parking lot” in particular is really evidently misleading… literally just meaningless words designed to sound good, but with no teeth behind them whatsoever.
In the bill, its literally 1 sentence… All it does is require the stadium district/brewers owner/city/county to write a report saying whether or not redevelopment is “feasible”… said report isnt even due for a full 2 years.
It has been a long while since my "bar-hopping on Brady Street" days but even then, I wondered why Brady Street wasn't pedestrian-only. It isn't a bad idea.
A pedestrianized brady st sounds like a great idea! Its use as a business district is already well established with tons of pedestrian activity & i feel would succeed quite well with pedestrianization. Think of how much more outdoor dining there could be or the programming that could occur on game days.
Here is the link to the proposed brady st designs… personally, im quite a fan of option 3 from a practicality aspect (option 4 would likely have exceptions to vehicle restrictions, particularly between humboldt and franklun): bradystreet.org/pedestrian-first-study/
Its worth noting though, such plans are quite ambitious considering the obscenely prudish and backwards nature of the local businesses. They refuse to accept even the most minor of traffic calming as proven by their demands to remove the recently installed chicane.
