When I first found out it was an interesting concept that I was pretty neutral on but the more I engage/lurk with the community the more I enjoy it....
Maybe an unpopular opinion of mine, but I don’t mind downvotes, but there doesn’t need to be a calculation of the sum of the upvotes and downvotes imv. That way both are observable for the users. If something is unpopular, you can see it but it doesn’t affect its overall standing in post hierarchy, pretty sure this is how reddit used to be about a decade ago.
People say Lemmy is too complicated for most people, well that’s probably a good thing as it naturally filters out the people who only want to incite anger for upvotes. There’s no love on Reddits main subreddits anymore
Yesterday a woman received a 28 month sentence, with over a year in custody, for using abortion pills to end her pregnancy. Humanists UK has reacted with shock and horror, and calls for immediate action to reform abortion law in England and Wales....
What’s been conveniently left out of this article is how long past the legal final termination date she took the pills, she took the tablets at 32-34 weeks, this almost full term! Full term is 40 weeks. She knew what she was doing and purposely lied to Drs and others over it.
How is what this woman did any different from the other woman who is currently on trial for murdering pre-mature babies by air embolisms.
Ah well, I would say those are all mitigated circumstances against the sentence. The other articles I read on this left that last part out.
If she tried to access an abortion legally within the humane timeframe and couldn’t because of the ongoing pandemic, then I can understand why this is seen as an injustice.
To add, any law that old should be looked at and renewed, there should be a parliamentary process for this.
I really thought labour would be progressive here too, to show a clear difference between them and the Conservative Party.
I don’t get it. Not evening opening a debate just shows total close-mindedness from the top of the party.
If they want those conservatives vote taken in 2019, my opinion is those voters would like to see progression on the issue too as they were lower income areas.

For those self-hosting a lemmy instance, what hardware are you using? I am currently using a small Hetzner VPS. It has 2 vCPU, 2GB RAM and 40GB SSD storage. My instance is currently just in testing with me as the only user, but I plan to use it for close friends or family that may want to try this out, but might not want to sign...
If I self hosted my own Lemmy on my home server, just for myself and I posted / uploaded images on it, when another user from another instance views my image, they cache it, would this mean later down the line if I deleted to free up server space, if someone else on that instance was to come across my image after deletion, because it was previously cached, the image would still show?
Wondering if rolling storage is possible eventually, where an archive of posts older than 2 years is performed and data deleted.
So after we've extended the virtual cloud server twice, we're at the max for the current configuration. And with this crazy growth (almost 12k users!!) even now the server is more and more reaching capacity....
One feature I really like about Lemmy is the ability to see NEW comments in chronological order across ALL posts.
Can take a really active part in many conversations quite fast this way
