Showroom7561,

Good for you!! A century is fun, and I think you'll be able to pull it off =)

Several +50km rides behind me at the moment

What's your current max distance, and was it very difficult, moderately difficult, or easy?

How much food should I pack?

Without knowing much about you or your riding style, take the amount of food you'd normally ride with for your 50km rides, and double it + add a little extra.

I've never been good with packing food or water, TBH. Sometimes, I'll come back from a century with most of my water and snacks untouched. LOL Sometimes, I'll go on short rides and will run out of everything.

My habit recently is to keep an eye on my calorie consumption on my bike computer, and make sure that I'm eating MORE than what the display shows. I'll also make sure to carb load the night before and the morning of my ride.

If I do it right, 100km is relatively easy. If I get my calories wrong, it's a very hard ride home.

Do you guys use sports drinks etc for hydration?

No, but I've been considering it just because it gives you calories, fluids, and electrolytes in one go. I'm a cheap bastard, so that's what's holding me back from using them.

I will bring water only, but will have electrolyte sachets in my trunk bag just in case I need it. I also like to bring water only because water only can be used for more than just drinking (handwashing, wound cleansing, etc.).

Any surprises I shouls know comparing the ride to shorter ones?

Provided that you're comfortable on your bike, it's just a longer version of your short ride :)

But... if you'll be out in the sun and heat much longer than you're used to, use sunscreen and hydrate more than normal. I find that the sun kicks my ass, while cloudy rides are much easier. For that reason, I've also been using thin arm sleeves to help with UV and to keep a little cooler.

Good luck!!

Showroom7561,

"The one trick that all advertisers hate!" LOL

Showroom7561,

broken glass strewn about.

If it looks like broken bottles, then it’s likely intentional (i.e. targeting cyclists). But as others have pointed it, it could also be smashed window glass, which will look considerably different to broken bottles.

Either way, it’s honestly a shame that criminals have to ruin it for everyone else.

Not that it’s going to prevent every puncture, but I’d consider getting some beefy, puncture resistant tires for your bike.

Showroom7561,

Is that a Wike trailer? If so, how do you like it?

Showroom7561,

That's so heartwarming.

Here in Durham Region (Ontario), every public event that I've attended this year has begun with land acknowledgement, and has had some other component of First Nation culture (i.e. smudging) included. It's honestly really nice to see.

Showroom7561,

Wow, that's awesome! Good for your work, too!

Are there any Reddit refugees spending more time on Lemmy than Reddit?

I am theoretically switching over from Reddit to Lemmy. Finding myself spending more time on Lemmy than on Reddit. Maybe it's because I am limited to using the desktop and can't aimlessly browse Reddit on my iPhone. Of late, the only subreddits I cared for were on sports and their matchday threads and r/watches. I found myself...

Showroom7561,

I haven't contributed to anything on Reddit since the blackout, and have tweaked my bookmarks/phone habits to favor Lemmy now. Eventually, I will delete my account, but I am part of a few threads and specific communities that I still want to be notified about, so that won't happen right away.

It's actually nice to start with a clean slate, and I'd much rather support Lemmy than some morally bankrupt, anti-community, "sometimes good, but mostly garbage" platform. LOL

What will really be a game changer is if/when search engines or a browser plugin comes out that will link to Lemmy instead of Reddit for search results.

Showroom7561,

Although it does not have hard data is making up the stats, the Retail Council of Canada says shoplifting is on the rise, in part due to rising inflation price gouging.

Fixed it all.

[Discussion] How can we deal with misinformation?

With the rapid advances we're currently seeing in generative AI, we're also seeing a lot of concern for large scale misinformation. Any individual with sufficient technical knowledge can now spam a forum with lots of organic looking voices and generate photos to back them up. Has anyone given some thought on how we can combat...

Showroom7561,

This is an unfortunate future. Unless something is done fast, the majority of content on the internet will simply be generated content with bots interacting with other bots.

Unless we only allow users who verify their identity to participate on certain websites, I can't see how else you could solve this problem.

Even then, some bad actors with a verified identity could be generating content using AI and posting it as their own.

I'm not even sure how anyone will be able to trust or believe any photo, video, or written idea online in the next 5 to 10 years.

Showroom7561,

Look up Wike, a Canadian bike trailer company that also sells out of Europe. Their cargo trailers hold 100lbs+ of weight.

Showroom7561,

“We deliberately have narrow lanes, so the driver doesn’t feel comfortable”

🤣 I love that so much. Driving should be made to be uncomfortable because it keeps drivers alert. It also helps to disincentivize driving over other forms of transportation.

Showroom7561,

That's a poorly designed road, that's why. Only highways should be fast because there is no expectation of cyclists or pedestrians being remotely close to those vehicles.

And those 3 lane roads, at least around here, have poor pedestrian and cycling infrastructure beside them, so they really do need to be much slower than they are.

Showroom7561,

I don't know. I had to use the highway today, and people drive like your life doesn't matter. Excessive speeding, dangerous lane changes, going too slow, etc.

I think automatic enforcement of highways should be more common, and it would help cut down on racing, too.

Showroom7561,

What a wild read. I had to check a few times to make sure it wasn't an Onion article 🤣

Showroom7561,

Might as well if you like action movies. I think the first one also has some pretty impressive camera work!

Showroom7561,

If you like action movies, absolutely.

Showroom7561,

Well, panniers are designed to hook onto a bike rack, so they are made for bikes. But Arkel makes quite a few styles of bags to suit every type of cycling or lifestyle.

I use their shopper bags for shopping, and the internal frame, extremely durable fabric, and bombproof latch means that I can carry 30lbs+ per bag!

Bit I also have a few of their waterproof bags that work well in all environments.

If you commute to work, they have pannier bags that look more like a work bag, and so on 😃

Showroom7561,

Leroux had recently spoken out against Pollock because of **his protest of Pride events in London. **

That's who. Just a massive POS in every aspect of his life.

Showroom7561,

If we’ve banned advertising for drugs and alcohol I don’t see why we won’t ban gambling ads.

You should see what YouTube is like without an ad-blocker. I swear to god, it's either an alcohol ad or a gambling ad. Nothing else.

I can't possibly imagine someone with a substance abuse history being able to survive the onslaught of constant marketing to drink, and maybe even pick up a gambling addiction while they are at it. It's truly shameful and disgusting.

Is The Future Of The AeroPress Clear? (www.youtube.com)

New Hoffman video dropped. Not sure if we have any 3rd wave coffee lovers in this community. I've been an avid AeroPress user for about two years now and it will be interesting to see where the company goes, though it will likely not affect me as this thing feels nigh indestructible and I can likely use it for ten years with no...

Showroom7561,

Also, I’m curious what your experience has been with Wacaco. To me the Pico/Nanopresso have seemed interesting from a travel perspective, but for home brewing don’t look too useful. Curious what your primary use case is.

I've got the Cuppamoka (fancy pour-over device) and the Pipamoka, but I'd really love to get a Pico/Mini/Nanopresso.

Both the Cuppamoka and Pipamoka make nice coffee, but I prefer the Cuppamoka's results better. Technique is important, and I was getting nearly the same results before as I do now with a better hand grinder and more appropriate grind settings.

I do use these both at home, but I'm a bit of a freak with making coffee using less common methods, even thought I've got pretty decent espresso and Nespresso machines. LOL

I don't know what it is about using them, but I appreciate the all-in-one nature of them both, and the fact that I don't need a machine to make coffee.

The Pico/Mini/Nanopresso would likely be less used at home, but I'd still enjoy using one :) If I can find a way to make coffee while out on long bike rides, without needing to boil water on the go, I'd totally get one.

Now, Hoffman did have another video comparing a bunch of portable espresso makers, and he was using boiled/hot water out of an insulated thermos, which sounds like it could work. I might just try it out with the Pipamoka!

Showroom7561,

There is an actual study disproving that myth (that beans increase flatulence).

The issue is that so few are used to actually eating enough fiber, that they might have a temporary increase in gas when they introduce more for the first time.

Showroom7561,

I eat them multiple times a day. I have absolutely zero problems with gas.

Once your gut bacteria gets used to having fiber, it's all good 👌
