Are you looking for some hitherto unknown fairy tales to buy as a present for the book-lover in your life? May I suggest a volume of 20 folk- and fairy tales by the Norwegian writer, Regine Normann?

Ok, that's enough of that shithead.

If we could all forget he ever existed – except when someone else mentions him, whereupon we literally spit on his memory – that'd be great.

Oh, and maybe murder an oligarch or two, in remembrance of all his millions of victims.

Even though the sun is effectively below the horizon (actually behind the mountains until mid January), it does sometimes show us where it is.

There will be an e-book edition of The Complete Norwegian Folktales and Legends Asbjørnsen & Moe, but it will take me a little while to produce it.

Looks like I'm going to have to learn the intricacies of the ePub format, too. (The dropcap is suddenly at the bottom of the page, above unlinked footnotes.)

@raymccarthy Actually, Calibre is something I forgot about... thanks.

Since my website is now a blog again, I'm blogging.

This time on my evolving plans for publication.

Tl;dr: Three different editions, for three different kinds of reader, to be published in 2024. Details here:

Seeing as the image of a princess riding on a white bear suits the folktales but not the legends, I made an ornament that better suits Norwegian legends: a wild reindeer ride.

(Ibsen has Peer Gynt boasting of the feat, bit the folklore puts someone else in the high seat.)

@folklore @folklorethursday

Detail view of the ornament of a man riding a panicked reindeer.

Thanks for the info! Hope to see a translation of that story with your name on it someday.

Speaking of LGBT themes in folktales, have you heard of “Lamia or Sybaris" (ATU 300, The Dragon-Slayer)? It's a Greek myth about a guy who saves another guy from an ogress because he's attracted to the would-be victim.

In case you or anyone else is interested, an English-language translation is available here:

SimonRoyHughes,
@SimonRoyHughes@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@Diego_L_Morales I haven’t heard of that tradition. My interest is quite narrow, though. @TarkabarkaHolgy is the person you want for breadth of knowledge.

Only the footnotes to arrange, now.

And I have to get my introductions finished and edited, I suppose.

Very nearly ready, relatively speaking.

@folklore I ought to note that the connection between these two works is Peter Christen Asbjørnsen, the most influential Norwegian of all time (probably).

When will Americans acknowledge that theirs is but one of 195 countries in the world?*

  • Not all Americans, I know.

I was just robbed for the first time in my life.

Next to a grocery store, two young men asked me if I could change €20 for them. I rummaged in my wallet, and one of the guys distracted me by rummaging in his wallet and discussing what kind of change he needed.

Then the other guy ripped all my banknotes out of my pocket, and they ran away. Since it was dark, I didn't notice any useful details. I reported this to the police, but don't expect to see those €300 again.

The amusement in watching an animated gif on a colour e-ink screen and witnessing the accumulated degradation of the image while the screen doesn't refresh.

SimonRoyHughes,
@SimonRoyHughes@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@raymccarthy Colour e-ink is currently best for annotating .PDFs and, as you say, reading pulp comics. But the larger screen at 300dpi is good for reading monochrome ebooks, too – with a light, yes.
