It says “no fully exposed” arse pix. What percentage of exposed derrière is acceptable? Asking for a friend.

I got the bin out on time today. Things can only get better.

I’m sure I’ll regret this but I’ll make an attempt…

First of all you have to define “Indian”. It’s a big country with many religions, ethnicities, castes. etc. At best, it’s a geographic term like saying someone is European.

I grew up next to a suburb with a large immigrant population. In those days we had Indians, Pakistanis (east and west) and West Indians (people of African descent from the Caribbean). I was lucky as I could learn about these different cultures at first hand. The Indians (mostly Hindus) and the Pakistanis (mostly Muslim) hated each other. The Indian Sikhs wisely kept their heads down and stayed out of it. The one thing that united them was their dislike for the Caribbean people. They all regarded them as their social inferiors.

Hate comes in many guises and from many places.

Now onto your main question. When you see anti-Indian hatred online is it directed at all Indians? I can see why some people take exception to Modi and his right-wing mobs killing Muslims and burning down mosques in the same way that lots of people condemn the Taliban for their treatment of decent, moderate people (especially women) in Afghanistan. Whenever religion is involved it always seems to multiply whatever fuckwittery an individual has. Add in some mob mentality and you have the recipe for bigotry and bodies. You have to ask yourself where the hatred is really aimed at. Is it hatred or well-deserved criticism from someone that isn’t articulate enough to make themselves clear?

Anyway, this is much too big a subject for a simple online response and I couldn’t possibly do it justice. If it’s any consolation I read crap every day about my country and people for being imperialists and yet we’ve been colonised/settled/invaded more than most places. Facts have never stopped a bigot from having their say.

Take care, friend, and as we say in my mother country: don’t let the bastards grind you down.

All bigotry is based on stereotypes. If anyone thinks less of me because of where I was born then they’re not the sort of person I should be wasting any time on.

Is this from one of Nigel Rees’ graffiti books?

Spudger,
@Spudger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Someone gave me a copy in the 90s although it’s from the 70s, I think. Well worth looking for in a second hand bookshop (if such things still exist).

Me too!

This is irritating. I use Nitter once a week to check if someone’s still alive. If I see them posting crap I know they’re still breathing.

Install Kubuntu, change the wallpaper to a grab of a BSOD and she’ll feel right at home.

An old trick but always a laugh when it works :)

Spudger,
@Spudger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Nope, the only thing you’re missing is the link. Now fixed.

This is weird for two reasons. One, I always preview posts for this very reason. Two, others have pointed this out but I had no notifications about it. This instance was being very flaky at the time so maybe that’s why.

I read about it yesterday and decided to give it a whirl. Still using it today. I’ll try it on my phone in a while.

Edit: Works a treat in Firefox on iOS. It’s a keeper.

I just mentioned wefwef to my better half. She just sniggered at me and said “has the world run out of names?”

I don't think we should strive to have as big a userbase as reddit.

Many of us have seen it happening in the last 4-5 years. reddit subs, and reddit in general has become a bit s***. Of course there are still good subs, especially the truly niche ones can often have a small helpful crowd. But with 100s of thousands of users, some sub drown in hate and negativity....

Spudger,
@Spudger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

As someone that never had a Reddit account* but still read about 18 subs on a daily basis (via Teddit) I was a bit sceptical about the value of signing up for Lemmy. So far, so excellent. It reminds me of the newsgroups I used to frequent 25 years ago. Big enough to be useful, small enough to be comfortable.

*I never had a Facebook or MySpace account either. I used Twitter for a year about a decade ago but it all seemed a bit “look at me” for my taste.

Unsure if this is off-topic for this thread so feel free to delete if that’s the case.

/r/firefox now looks like this.

Spudger,
@Spudger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Yep, Teddit works well for me because I don’t have a Reddit account. It’s quick and privacy respecting. I think I may have found it through the Privacy Redirect extension for Firefox.

Spudger,
@Spudger@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I think you’re probably correct.

btw, if anyone wants a shitty pic of a firefox then I declare this one now in the public domain.

Edit: I should add that I don’t have a Reddit account to post this myself.

Apple joins the opposition to encryption-bypassing 'spy clause' in UK internet law (www.theregister.com)

Apple has joined the rapidly growing chorus of tech organizations calling on British lawmakers to revise the nation’s Online Safety Bill – which for now is in the hands of the House of Lords – so that it safeguards strong end-to-end encryption.

Indeed. No such thing as bad publicity, etc. At least the iPhone-clutching masses on the morning commute will be reading about this now.

Indeed. I talked to support when it was first delivered as the packaging had been tampered with and my paranoia kicked in :) Good and helpful people.
