I am not sure the U.S. government should mandate SawStop table saws. What I think they should do is actually pay SawStop a fee to open all its patents to non-discriminatory and reasonable licensing in order to reduce the retail cost due to the societal benefit and only mandate that all saws used by an employee or contractor of a business has SawStop. https://www.npr.org/2024/04/02/1241148577/table-saw-injuries-safety-sawstop-cpsc

Supposenot,

@glennf an awful lot of these injuries are to hobbiests imitating bad safety practices they see modeled by YouTubers. I don’t think your version goes far enough.

Supposenot,

@glennf sawstop is on the record in the hearing saying they won’t enforce the one remaining patent if the government mandates brake tech. In that scenario, no finger on the scale. Or the shop floor.

@gruber a take on Warnock I think you might like (I’m not the author). https://wickershamsconscience.wordpress.com/2023/09/01/john-warnock-its-complicated/

Many truth bombs here. Things are so different than when older generations of Americans were first getting their start. https://www.comicsands.com/gen-x-mom-tiktok-rant-2663036757.html?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=infeed&utm_campaign=linkprogram

Supposenot,

@georgetakei hate to break it to her, this was already the reality for a lot of gen x-ers… home ownership, marriage, first child, moving out, these were already much lower or later than their boomer parents, and there were a ton of us that had to move back in with our parents for at least a few years. It HAS gotten worse, but why is she surprised? It’s the compound interest of enshittification because of Reaganomics, privatization, and lack of investment in public infrastructure and education.

It's Hard Fork Friday! This week, we interview the SF activists putting traffic cones on autonomous vehicles to protest the arrival of robo-taxis. Plus: Zoom's anti-AI revolt and the rise of 'don't scrape me, bro' https://www.nytimes.com/2023/08/11/podcasts/dont-scrape-me-bro-the-activists-sabotaging-self-driving-cars-and-how-reddit-beat-a-rebellion.html

"Getting rid of physical books because we now have databases is like getting rid of sunshine because of the existence of vitamin-D pills and cod liver oil." --love that.

a plea for keeping physical libraries available. (but it is key to remember that all living library collections include materials that come and also go)

    https://scottlocklin.wordpress.com/2023/07/28/death-of-the-physical-library/

    Supposenot,

@brewsterkahle @JorgeStolfi I found the repeated swipes in the article at gender studies and similar annoying and weakened his argument… he literally suggests that the books in storage will be recycled and the paper used for “latinx queer studies”. Perhaps if some of those books had been on nearby shelves to stuff he liked he would have learned how to make a good argument without also coming across as a racist, homophobic, and sexist troll.

My academic discipline is SO supportive of married couples in the profession that they have given it a charming and delightful name.

    “The two body problem.”

Now if language like that doesn’t make you feel supported, I don’t know what’s wrong with you!

We are all lucky that Trump often fails to pay people who work for him. That he feels no obligation to reward loyalty, unless for immediate benefit.

I shudder to think what we would be facing if he'd helped participants in the coups on Jan. 6, to pay their legal fees, to give them more than the thinnest of rhetorical shelter. Especially the "little people."

Instead it's served as an important lesson -- I doubt he will benefit from that kind of violent self-sacrifice again.

    Supposenot,

@futurebird it’s probably transferable though… DeSantis might get it if he can get any traction with that crowd.

When it rains after a prolonged period of dry weather, there is a smell created. It's called Petrichor. A wonderful word, and utterly useless trivia item. The smell is caused by something call Geosmin, which is produced by bacteria in the soil. Humans can smell it at 5 parts per TRILLION. In contrast Sharks can detect blood at concentrations of 1 part per million. On this one substance, we have a better sense of smell than sharks do for blood. Humans are amazing!

    Supposenot,

@quixoticgeek @yogthos anyone have any idea what evolutionary advantage being able to detect petrichor at these levels provides? WHY can we smell it that well?
