Thorny_Insight,

10k mountain bike is like 95% the same bike as what a professional mountain biker would use in a competition. 10k motorbike is consumer grade junk that would probably break within minutes if you abuse it like you do a pro bike.

Thorny_Insight, (edited )

I somehow doubt that’s anywhere compareable to the bikes they use on motoGP or such. A quick google seems to put those anywhere from 1 to 4 million USD.

Thorny_Insight,

Yeah, I’m just trying to illustrate that many people don’t quite seem to appreciate the level on engineering that is put into these things. What your average weekend warrior is doing with their mountain bike is not that far away from what a pro enduro racer would do in a competition. That’s why you need pro level gear too and that comes with a cost. A walmart bike simply just can’t handle the abuse and there’s plenty of videos on YouTube demonstrating that.

Thorny_Insight,

No… That’s my point. 10k mountain bike basically is that rally subaru. That’s why it’s not fair to compare a bike like that to consumer level motorbikes. That mountain bike is pro-level.

Thorny_Insight,

I predict that years will go by and it’ll still be called Threads.

Are phone notification LEDs still a thing?

Looking at all the features that older phones uses to have compared to newer ones, I never hear anyone talk about the removal of the notification LED. I personally really liked that feature, being able to see if I got an email, a text or missed a call without turning on my phone was awesome. My Samsung note 8 had this feature,...

Thorny_Insight,

Have it on my Samsung XCover 6 Pro but it’s not really a feature I care about much, as I have all notificatons disabled anyways.

Thorny_Insight,

Never understood the need to abbreviate a random 4 letter word anyways

Thorny_Insight,

Well if we exclude the slow and painful ways to die I’d say that drowning by diving under ice and not finding the way back. The panic on your last minutes must be something else.

Thorny_Insight,

In Finland we have a “local Oreo” called Domino. Oreo always had this mythical reputation as a famous american cookie almost no one had tasted. Then Oreos came to the stores here for the first time so I naturally bought a pack to try them out. I never bought another one. Those are incredibly dry and dull tasting compared to the Domino cookies I’m used to.

Elon Musk gives X employees one year to replace your bank - ‘You won’t need a bank account... it would blow my mind if we don’t have that rolled out by the end of next year.’ (www.theverge.com)

“If it involves money. It’ll be on our platform. Money or securities or whatever. So, it’s not just like send $20 to my friend. I’m talking about, like, you won’t need a bank account.”...

Thorny_Insight,

It’s hilarious how Musk gives his staff ultimatums.

In this case he didn’t though. It’s just an intentionally misleading clickbait headline and if you read the article itself there’s no mention of a ultimatum.

Thorny_Insight,

Nah. You guys just love to bond over the mutual hatred of Elon. There’s a ton of more influencial people than him of who hardly nobody is talking about here. Elon is like Trump. They get loads of free attention and media cover largely because the haters can’t stop talking about them. Before I came to lemmy hardly remembered Elon exists.

Thorny_Insight,

Well there’s still the slight difference that Trump was the president of the most powerful nation in the world and Elon is a random tech bro. If you don’t drive Tesla nor use Twitter or Star Link then what ever Elon does has virtually zero effect on you life. You’d be surprised of how insignificant person he is outside this bubble. Most normal people pay no attention to him as they shouldn’t.

Thorny_Insight,

It was not cut off. Starlink was not enabled on the coast of Crimea in the first place. They asked Elon to enable it to which he said no.

Thorny_Insight,

Starlink was never enabled in Crimea because that would be against the sanctions placed by the US. You’re spreading misinformation.

Thorny_Insight,

No they didn’t

Isaacson, the biographer, issued his own clarification on Sept. 8, acknowledging that Starlink was not enabled in Crimea in the first place:

To clarify on the Starlink issue: the Ukrainians THOUGHT coverage was enabled all the way to Crimea, but it was not. They asked Musk to enable it for their drone sub attack on the Russian fleet. Musk did not enable it, because he thought, probably correctly, that would cause a major war.

Thorny_Insight,

It’s not that uncommon for me to be about to send a message to my friends, but I then realize that they’re probably not interested so I message chatGPT instead and that often leads to a long indepth conversation about the subject. It’s not perfect but it’s really good. I can’t wait for a version of it that I can talk to using just my voice.

Thorny_Insight,

As someone with a metal detector, those things are incredibly sensitive. A gold coin and an aluminium can pull tab both pretty much give the same signal. I’d imagine that finding mines with just that would be incredibly inefficient since it’s going to be mostly just false alarms and metal is everywhere. Some new version I heard about combined metal detector with a ground penetrating radar of some sort and that thing gave much better results.

Thorny_Insight,

Oh sure. What I meant to highlight there is the sheer amount of work that’s needed to clear these lands of mines. Currently that pretty much means dividing the ground into 1 x 1 meter grid and going square by square.

Thorny_Insight,

Yeah ferrous metals give a different signal that copper, bronze or aluminium. I’d imagine mines contain all kinds of metals so you can probably ignore some of the signals. Though then there’s also those tiny bomblets that I think have no metal in them whatsoever and detonate from the pressure of your feet.

Thorny_Insight,

A true virtual reality. Not goggles, but the kind that hooks up into your brain and consciousness. One that’s indistinguishable from real life. The kind where you can basically just live your entire life in some kind of a virtual multiplayer where quite literally anything is possible. You could be hooked up to an IV that feeds you optimal diet etc. go off the deep end if you want.

I know how it might seem crazy to see something like that as a desirable thing, but I really think it would solve many of the issues in the world. I don’t think you’re “wasting your life” if you’re being happy in a virtual world, and I don’t see a reason why you couldn’t be happy there. You could have your own private world(s) and others would have theirs. There would be public worlds also with a ton of real people aswell as AI, and people could visit your worlds aswell if you let them. Just think about the possbilities. Why ruin the planet when you can have abundance in the virtualverse.

Thorny_Insight,

In the worst case they don’t notice and lose control on the highway and die. I’m pretty sure that’s illegal. This is hardly different from suggesting to cut their brake lines.

Thorny_Insight,

2007 diesel pickup here. It’s even a two seater with a long bed so an actual work truck. Basically makes me a saint compared to those evil SUV drivers.

Thorny_Insight,

I like sitting higher so I can see over other vehicles. Also as a tall person getting into and out of a truck is much easier than from a car. Safety plays a big factor aswell; if I end up in a accident I’ll rather be in the bigger vehicle. Compared to american trucks mine is quite compact though. It’s called Frontier in the US.

Thorny_Insight,

Neither are hammers but hitting someone in the head with one is.
