Hey fellow Covid Cautious people, how do you deal with overwhelming loneliness and despair? Because, y'know, everyone else is fully capable of dealing with these things and it's just me who doesn't know the one weird trick to coping with an absurd and horrific existence.

@osakajack I used to have occasional video chats with friends, but they all seem too busy or preoccupied to even text most of the time, now. Some have very young kids so I can begrudge them that, but it still sucks. It's like once they moved on and thought it was safe to go out again, the idea of video chatting wasn't an imperative anymore.

@arisummerland Lately, whenever I'm reminded of something from years past, I think about how I'd love to be able to go back to that time with the knowledge I have now and re-live it, maybe do it better.

But then I'll think: how will I go to sleep without being able to put on an episode of Next Gen?

Eh, it'd still be worth it.

There's already like 5 inches of snow and it's falling fast, so I went out to do a quick shoveling pass (was just waiting for a video to render, anyway). The snow was so light and fluffy, and everything was so still and quiet. At 2:30 am, it felt for a moment like I had the whole world to myself--and in that moment, I wished it were true, because then I could go out into the world without worrying about ignorant assholes spreading covid in order to keep up the veneer of normalcy.

I know the Twilight-Zone-esque loneliness would set in before long in such a fantasy, but to feel just for a moment that there were no more restrictions of fear because all the people were gone--the fact that such a thought CAN be a fantasy--is something I wish I could convey to every thoughtless rube who tore their mask off and rushed out to the malls and movie theaters, coughing all the way. I wish they knew what they were doing to the world that I could revel in the dream of their absence.

I don't know what brought this to mind, but I was just thinking about the band HIM, which apparently stood for "His Infernal Majesty," and then the film that The Departed was based on, Infernal Affairs. They hit a very low-grade annoyance in me.

What are you, fucking Skeletor? Nobody says "infernal."

I don’t think the trajectory of my madness has changed, but I’m now on four psychiatric meds simultaneously as the team tries their best to rescue me from the clutches of Fate.

We’ll see what happens I guess.

The care team did agree that I’m simply not healthy enough for any procedure requiring repeated anesthesia though, which is good because I wasn’t going to approve such anyway.

I’m trying.

@hilljam Hey, me too! And I've tried various other games and distractions over the years, but solitaire is the perfect level of engagement for hand-eye coordination leaving the ears free to still do the work.
