Way back when, Pixar were going to make a film called Newt. It was about two rare species of Newt, one of each gender, who needed to mate to save their species. Unfortunately, the female couldnโt stand the male. For whatever reason, they escape the lab and have an adventure.
Apparently this was around the time Rio was released and the stories were apparently too similar. (I havenโt seen Rio, do I donโt know), so the project was canned.
Itโs a shame as I really liked the concept art which can be found online and I really liked the style.
In fact, newt makes two small tiny cameos in other Pixar films.
The fan film made the news recently because the day of the new live action films announcement, Warner Bros had it taken down from YouTube in a copyright claim. But it was restored about 24 how later.
The problem with those videos is that theyโre designed for the YouTube advert system. Show the big moments to get them interested and then they sit and watch the ad/trailer rather than skip it.
It looks odd when youโre viewing it separately though.
Iโm sure when I was a lad there were only two types of trailer, or at least the ones I remember. First there was a teaser trailer that would only last for about a minute and was quite coy in what to reveal. Although in fairness, thatโs probably because there wasnโt enough footage ready to make a trailer, especially if it contained special effects elements.
The second trailer would later arrive, two minutes at most, containing special effects shots, and it would give you an idea of the film without revealing too much.
What have we got now? The entire film in three minutes to make sure everyone comes to see the film. I donโt, I feel like Iโve seen it and have no plans on watching it now. cough The Fall Guy cough
In the beginning, it was a mix of LiftOff! and Jerboa. The dev of LiftOff! had twins and understandably, he hasnโt returned and the app has fallen to the wayside.
So I tried Thunder (available on Android and iOS) and itโs been really good, lots of regular updates and features as well.
I remember SotE very well. The whole thing was a major media event by Lucasfilm. There was:
PC and N64 game
Tie-in novel
Comic book series
Soundtrack CD
A โmaking ofโ book
Essentially, everything that wouldโve been released to promote a major film but this time, there was no film. I remember the making of book well as there was a picture of the game developers playing the N64 version but their hands were in cardboard boxes. The N64 hadnโt been released yet and so they had to hide the controllers from prying eyes.
The review was very interesting because it sounds like they fucked up by saving money. The whole film has been compressed onto a 66gb disc. In comparison, if you have access to that kaleidoscope service where you can stream the original 4K files, it is a 87gb download. So paramount have compressed the film buy about a third, causing the film to look worse than it should.
