Used to & might still: astrobiology, complex systems, agile software development, community design & development, data mining, artificial life, genetic programming (software synthesis), molecular biology (combinatorial chemistry), philosophy of science, management consulting (futurism-nobody-listens-to), open access…

Then a long disruptive break as my wife & I spent a decade taking care of sick friends & relatives.

Now, mainly: sell books on eBay; scan printed works; public domain support

TFW you are doing a little inventory maintenance and five books in this one box are not even present in the inventory?

Have they ever been?

Are they real books, or did the Brownies create them?

Finally got around to kludging together my page scans of this lovely 1899 catalog from the Library Bureau in Boston

It may still be pre-processing on the server, as of this writing. Give it time.

Discovered today that pork belly starts to want to float when it gets around 170°F in the sous vide bath. Went from hanging the ziplock bags from sticks to weighting them down with spoons.

Hope they're well sealed. Fingers crossed.

Eclipse traffic 30 minutes before it starts is certainly Something.

(I made it to Toledo and parked at a pizza pub by campus. But it's currently cloudy.)

@eikenberry THAT WAS US

Vaguery,

@eikenberry We were in a caravan through Temperance and other small towns for a good half hour, all Siri Tribe. The Google Tribe took different turns, I expect.

@peterhoneyman @eikenberry On the way back north we were definitely losing ground on the arrival estimate. At one point it was an hour estimate, then we drove half an hour, and checked again and it had become longer than an hour.

I don't know the answer to this yet, but it has been bugging me since I woke up for some reason:

Is it possible to fill out a 3x3 square of cells with unique integers, such that every row and column [and diagonal?] contains a Pythagorean triple?

That is, where the three numbers {n1,n2,n3} in any row/column, in some order, satisfy a^2 + b^2 = c^2?

It feels like it depends on integers participating in many triples... but big ones do, sometimes?

Spending much of the afternoon trying to get rid of a weird flickering in my VMware Fusion Windows emulation on my ancient laptop, only to discover that (1) there's an easy fix for that, but (2) I changed so many memory and "video" settings that it's fucked for five other reasons now

Just watched "The Russians are Coming! The Russians are Coming!" and it's honestly a remarkably good film.

Norman Jewison interview on the DVD is worth looking for, once you've watched it. A lot of historical context that makes it even better in hindsight.

That weird liminal state when you're waiting for the tradesfolk to show up within the window of time they specified, and the window is just about over.

Can't start anything, can't wander off to finish anything unfinished. Enforced sitting and waiting for outside noises.

Just listened to this interview with the author of a book I confess I would not normally find of deep personal interest. But I recommend the interview wholeheartedly: it reveals an awful lot about how the Taft Supreme Court is echoed in our [US] current conservative, laissez-faire court, and more important: why.

If I were a human being at Amazon I would probably hesitate to ship six pint glasses mail order in a fucking plastic bag with no padding, even if I put the bag inside a much bigger cardboard box by itself.

But also because I hesitated they would fire me.

So the lesson for me is: I should never order glass from an inhuman entity whose practices assign glass (and employees) insufficient value to protect them.

The temperature is going to drop into the single digits (°F) for the next three days. I’m excited that we’re having an actual winter, at least for a few days. The snow will stick around and maybe we can go x-c skiing!
