Oh hey, one of my friends linked me this in video form about a year ago, and I made a video where, as Phobos passes the sun, the Doom Level 1 music fades in and out.

Welcome, this is the Linux user equivalent of popping your cherry.

You have a few options, but the easiest is to just use a rescue thing like Rescatux on a USB drive that automates most of the process. If you haven’t the means of flashing a USB drive (like another computer) but still have your linux installation USB drive, most distros offer a “rescue existing install” option somewhere in their installer/liveUSB. But you’ll have to search around.

“FLAC? Mate I destroyed my ears when I was 14 and listening to Linkin Park MP3s grabbed off Kazaa in the cheapest chinese earbuds my allowance could buy, at the highest volume my fake iPod could drive. I cannot hear the subtleties in your FLAC if I tried.”

Cheek aside I believe the word would be Videophiles to pair with Audiophiles.

Well it got some politicians and corporations to do some performative “we stand with them” gestures. That’s the same as enacting meaningful change in the criminal system and in systemic racism, right? /s

How are you all partitioning your setup?

I have 2 drives in my machine. Linux right now is installed on 1/4 of the first drive and I am going to start moving parts of my 2nd drive, which is just games on Windows, to a 1/2 combo of NTFS and BTRFS. Essentially giving Linux more space as it replaces Windows as my gaming daily driver. With the eventual plan to move that...

Nvme ssd, 480 gigs = Linux root ext4, with a smol /boot/efi/ partition

Sata ssd, 480 gigs = windows install

Hdd, 1 Tb = Linux home ext4

External usb3.0 2tb Hdd = shared storage exFat

How do we know if there aren't a bunch of more undetected backdoors?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I’m more hesitant to do so especially because i’m no security expert and don’t have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I’ve done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port....

Cheeky answer: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FWr61WZXoAcjx9R.jpg

Actual answer:
Theoretically anyway, open source software’s guarantee of “no backdoor” is that the code is auditable, and you could study it and know if it has any holes and where. Of course, that presumes that you have the knowledge AND time to actually go and study thousands of lines of code. Unrealistic.
Slightly less guaranteed but still good enough to calm my mind, is the idea that there is a whole-ass community of people who do know their shit and who are constantly checking this.

Do note that like. Closed source software is known to be backdoored, only, the backdoors are mostly meant for either the owners of the software (check the fine print folks) or worse, the governments.

The biggest thing that you should note is that: It is unlikely that you (or I or most of the people here) are interesting enough that anyone will actually exploit those vulnerabilities to personally fuck you over. Your photos aren’t interesting enough except as part of a mass database (which is why Google/Facebook want them). Same for your personal work data and shit.

Unless those backdoors could be used to turn your machine into a zombie for some money-making scheme (crypto or whatever) OR you’re connected to people in power OR you personally piss off someone who is a hacker – it is very unlikely you’ll get screwed over due to those vulnerabilities :P

A DE tries to be a full operating environment, it has panels and configuration tools and (…) all as part of the package

A WM only does window management, and other things need to be added separately. The line blurs a bit since most people who use WMs end up adding a lot of other stuff to them to the point it might as well be a DE, only it was built piecemeal.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

My DE choices:

  • KDE Plasma – It’s pretty, it’s customizable. Workflow is customizable
  • XFCE – Honestly I consider XFCE to be like Plasma’s sibling, in that its workflow is also very customizable and there is a lot of space for theming, but is lighter and acts nicer on weaker hardware

I tried Gnome and I just hate it? It needs a lot of fennagling to look and act in a way I find enjoyable. Cinnamon is eeeeeeeeehhhhh.

WM-wise, I played with Hyprland and I3WM, but tiling WMs aren’t for me. They just aren’t. For what convenience I gained from being able to use Super+something to do basically everything, I don’t enjoy the workflow.

I also used Wayfire for a bit – Writing my own configuration file and customizing everything IS fun, but like… Nah?

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

None that I know of. Though you can build your own operating environment centered around Hyprland. Their wiki is pretty good and their config files are nice and simple to understand. I did that for a lark a few months back.

… The catch is that, y’know, it’s a whole afternoon spent tinkering to get it right.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

YMMV of course. It took me an afternoon to get it to a point where it had the stuff I needed and was enjoyable to use.

… f’course I didn’t stick with it, as I said in my toplevel post, turns out tiling WMs aren’t for me.

[SOLVED-See Comments] My "Windows" boot entry has disappeared from the EFI menu

Title. I dual-boot Windows and Linux. I always saw people making “WINDOWS DELETED MY LINUX BOOTLOADER OMGOMG” posts and it had never happened to me. Now, the opposite has happened. I switched from EndeavourOS to OpenSUSE and now my windows install is no longer selectable on boot....

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

os-prober was installed, but it was indeed disabled.

I went through the process of activating it and remaking the grub configuration. But it seems to not care about Windows, likely because, as stated in my post, it is on a separate physical drive. Probably some way to tell it to look there as well, but I don’t know it. I might do some searching of my own later, right now I got shit to do. Booted into my laptop (which I keep with just windows because its ssd is too small for me to have any fun)

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I did not touch the windows partitions, and that includes the microsoft reserved partition where the windows bootloader (supposedly, linux doesn’t let me mount the MSR partition) is.

I only messed with the drive where Linux was installed and there, I made its own, separate /boot/efi partition.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

Some people in the community do get it. It’s just that the “I got bullied in high school so now I like to yell at people in webforums” people are so very loud.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

Yeah, I’ve been at this since my dad first showed my 10 year old self Linux in the early aughts, and I don’t think it’s ever going to change.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I have HEARD of reFind, but could not figure out how to use it. You got a good tutorial to link me up with?

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I cannot get into Windows in any way. I CAN get into Linux with no problem though. Anyway.

(as I said in my post–) My intention is to not use grub at all and to choose windows through my bios menu when I do need it. Which is what I had been doing for the past year.

It’s just that its entry in the bios menu has disappeared.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I managed to revive windows but now Linux doesn’t show up, lmao

But I think I know what to do about that. Give me like 10 and I’ll report back.

VinesNFluff, (edited )
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I FIXED IT

Fucking hell that was a pain. And as most of the painful things in life, it was mostly self-inflicted.

I consider it the polite thing to make a report on what I did to fix things when I solve my problem in a tech support thread (in case someone is ever searching this, to avoid the xkcd scenario ) so I will do that now:

  • First off, going into a Windows install media and running some commands, as described by @alphapuggle and @Babbiorsetto did do the trick for reviving Windows.
  • BUT, I am an idiot and I pointed Windows to the wrong thing, so it wiped out my Linux boot partition. O o p s i e . . .
  • I was a bit stumped on what to do, and had actually flashed the USB drive (this idiot here only owns ONE USB drive) with the SUSE install media, fully intending to do a complete reinstall, but THEN,
  • I realised that in the install media’s menu, there is a “boot Linux system” menu, and entered it on a whim
  • Sure enough, that found my existing OpenSUSE install and let me get into it.
  • From there I just used YaST to re-install and re-configure grub
  • Both Windows and Linux seem to be functioning now, yay

So, 85% “me being an idiot”, but, the problem is solved. I thank everyone who made a comment.

VinesNFluff,
@VinesNFluff@pawb.social avatar

I will probably do that, yes.
