ai6yr, to california

Interesting, California has a pilot program on an effort to charge drivers by the number of miles you drive, instead of through gas taxes. (to make up for lost revenues to EVs, which do not need gasoline). They are paying $400 in gift cards -- and a gas tax or EV registration fee credit -- for taking part in the pilot. https://caroadcharge.com/media/zehd2y5s/ca-sb-339_public-fact-sheet_final_remediated.pdf

@ai6yr they always somehow find a way to recombobulate a "we need to fix the environment" objective to "oh fuck, but we gotsta get paid" one

how sdg&e of them

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr hey maybe they could take some of LAPDs budget.

salaries (1.7 billion) expenses (106 million) equipment (24 million)

JUST FOR 2024

they can spare it.

i mean shit, like a third goes to paying off the lawsuits for the shit they pull and the people they kill.

if they just "stopped murdering" and maybe "decided not to refresh their tanks this year" california wouldnt need to ... i guess fuck around with gift cards?

i am itchy and covered in insulation, but there is one less mesh AP in the house. phew!

now if only any of those "use your camera to creae a floorplan of your house" apps actually worked at all, i could plunk a floorplan into the unifi stuff and light up @nzyme

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

lesson learned:

  • unifi wifi meshing SUUUUCKS on the unifi nanoHD and uap ac pro

  • despite meticulous config work, roaming to mesh aps is very slow, problematic and troublesome

  • yes i told ubiquiti, after sending them debug logs they said "its working just fine"

i havent tried meshing with any of the bigger or more interesting aps, but if you rock a unifi system and you have mesh nodes and "theyre slow to roam and sometimes suck" you arent alone.

you know what?
ai would be beter than this, i think.

im not hugely looking forward to the apocalypse, but one thing is certain - an llm does a better job as a first tier support rep than people who care so little about their jobs they dont even bother reading.

i have absolutely zero sympathy for the folks who get replaced that are so intentionally bad at their jobs they outright refuse to function and present themselves as an obstacle

@buherator makes me wonder why they dont the instagram thing and just 'not have support at all'

@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

the nsa is running job ads on instagram.

im not even sure how to process this

@nf3xn no doubt

@Jplonie well i wasnt lucky enough to have rob joyce follow me on twitter back when it was a thing, and hes now retired, and his successor is mr super military guy, i guess, and not on mastodon - but its not like i'd sell my company to go work for the nsa anyway, heh

@ashleygjovik@mastodon.social avatar

I owe you guys more updates about the Gjovik v #Apple hearing on Thursday, but I've been so overwhelmed with emotion the last couple days; I've been kinda speechless.

I'll probably have to write a blog post about it to properly convey what it feels like to do something impossible like this & actually have it go in your favor.

I'll also share the audio recording when its posted (prob next week). The formal decision is prob 2-3 weeks out still, but I'm feeling good.

Boeing shareholders approved a $33M pay package for CEO Dave Calhoun, despite overseeing huge losses and safety problems.

It's the biggest package ever given to a Boeing CEO.

Calhoun is resigning by year's end. Guess what he gets then?

A $45 million golden parachute.

Unreal.

@rbreich how is it ransomware groups arent going after THOSE folks?

any time i see any post anywhere from someone who says they want to get into security as a career now, in 2024

Viss,

@hrbrmstr we have become those smokers who tell people not to start smoking

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@hrbrmstr my advice has been, and continues to be "go be a sysadmin for 2-5 years and learn how this shit works first, THEN DECIDE if you want to add the security layer on top of it, because if you dont have any clue how computers and networks function you're not gonna be any good at even attempting to secure them"

about three quarters of the time they bail on the effort.

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

@hrbrmstr its like when they say "oh i wanna work with animals!" because it sounds fluffy and nice, but then they realize it means "sometimes killing them" or "learning what cowpunching is", or like "dealing with rabies" and all the gory stuff that doesnt come in the pamphlets.. and they bail on the idea.

many years ago, and i can't recall why, i predicted that because of surveillance and other dumb nonsense, the "real internet" would become very similar to tor - opaque, hard to track, p2p, and 'kinda underground', and the 'main internet' would be basically like the inside of a mall. mall cops, store fronts, expensive useless crap, lots of ads.

if you need to 'buy stuff' you go to the 'real internet', but your friends, your hobbies, the stuff you like, is on the 'private internet'.

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

also, ultra huevos de chuckle and pelotas de kek at every single company who has a super thick privacy policy document, that has also decided to scrape all their customer data to train their own llm.

like, what are you even doing? do words not matter to you anymore? are your in-house lawyers sponatneously combusting due to sheer anxiety? how does this all work?

Viss,
@Viss@mastodon.social avatar

i have cumulatively spent weeks of time in the 8+ years phobos has existed because a customers lawyer decided that they didnt like the state of jurisdiction, or the number of years the nda was good for, or they wanted to precision tune the liability statements with a scanning electron microscope, or they wanted to lay claim to the copyright of our report design. and these are effectively nothingburgers at the end of the day.

so im REALLY CURIOUS now.

inside my brain, this storyboard is getting sketched out of a musk-esque character depicted as butthead standing in a boardroom and as the scene opens its dead silent, until you hear buttheads coined 'Uhh huhuhuhuh' and you realize what you're in for because he's in a suit and standing in front of a whiteboard with a graph on it

Viss,

@mttaggart i have several wire chatrooms that are still active. i miss the gif room though, that thing was a hilariously good time for a long while.

@joy no worries! they're not scary expensive, like 200-300 bux for a really good one
