The internet as a whole was so much better for this.

Free speech and exchanging of idea and views was great. Most of my time on YouTube was spent looking at out and out discussions, back and forth, about religion. Which seeing as I went to a religious school I didn’t really have anyone to talk to that was very helpful for me.

Now people come to a conclusion and stick with it. But they also get encouraged by people doing exactly the same upvoting their view and down voting others. Evidence doesn’t matter. Reddit and redditors used to encourage upvoting alternative opinions.

People are going so far as to want certain views banned just because it isn’t their view. It’s scary how much people want to be restricted. Reddit used to be great for free speech but now its terrible. I was hoping Lemmy would, by it’s federated nature, be an exchange of different ideas and views but if anything it is a lot worse. (I actually find the mods to largely be okay. But the people are terrible, worse than reddit is at this moment it time)

So no Lemmy is nothing like reddit of old at all. I’d love to go back to reddit from 10 years ago.

I was hoping that by being such a small and growing community I could help influence it’s growth.

But watching how incorrect things about economy/business are upvoted, I’m getting sick of being down voted for having an economics degree and attempting to share some knowledge.

Wanderer,

I have exclusively only voted left actually.

The left aren’t doing enough, the Tories have proven they haven’t done enough. That’s why reform makes sense because it sends a message about how much immigration needs to be reduced.

Wanderer, (edited )

I have voted green before but I don’t think they care enough about immigration. I think the economic boom in green energy means that the landslide to green power is already underway and effort should be spent in other areas. No one is really going to slow or speed up the green revolution from a global point of view, which is frankly all that matters?

Why would I vote for libdem?

Wanderer,

Getting rid of FPTP and doing absolutely anything about immigration rather than just acting like it isn’t an issue.

Everything else is secondary.

Wanderer,
  1. Yet they aren’t going far enough.
  2. People have been so horrifically mislead on this it’s unbelievable. It’s true immigration as a whole can be “good” (what good is, is debatable) but it also isn’t wrong to say that it could be good to reduce immigration. Not all immigration is the same and not all amount are the same, grouping it together messes the whole thing up. The purpose of immigration as it is now now is to keep wages down and keep houses prices up.

Do you really care about GDP do you even really care about GDP per capita? Probably not but those figures are used to woo you. What’s better having a GDP per capita of 50,000 and rent of 40,000 or having a GDP per capita of 30,000 and having rent of 10,000? With lower rents people have more discretionary income and they can go out spend more, grow the economy and it will create growth. Everyone wins. Currently all our money is going to landowners and business owners. Immigration is for them not for us. So you say we need more X workers. Okay pay people enough to do it. They aren’t trained? Pay for training it’s not hard it just costs money. It’s not like the UK is at 100% employment rate people want to work but can’t. It’s cheaper to get immigrants to do it, but its bad for the UK.

Look at Japan low immigration, low house costs, low crime. They manage to fill their jobs. Yet Japan is doing something wrong?

Let’s get some facts and figures. Here is an article about UK losing money to immigration.

telegraph.co.uk/…/migration-failed-economic-growt…

Here is Danish data on crime.

…substack.com/…/the-effects-of-immigration-in-den…

Why are we taking in people that are taking British people jobs costing the country money and committing more crimes than locals?

I voted remain, I’m happy to have immigration. But what it is now and what it is used for is wrong. You really think net migration of over half a million people per year is good? Why is that happening?

That’s not even to mention the cultural aspect. I love Britain and I love how it is. But I am also very well travelled and the place I most felt like an outsider and been stared like I don’t belong is within the UK. Why are we doing that to ourselves? If we take a financial hit to train our workforce, give them jobs and keep our culture I’m happy to do it. Give us the choice. But I actually think financially the people will be better off at the expense of the upper class. They why we don’t get to choose.

  1. Brexit was a shower of shit. Yea. Boris pushed for it and then had the power to do something about it. He’s one of the most evil politicians in the UK. Fuck him. Brexit was a vote for less immigration, it’s not the peoples fault or even UKIPs fault that immigration didn’t go down.

Whatever happened then doesn’t mean we don’t have issues now.

Wanderer,

Reform has some good points. It’s unfortunate that the left has completely lost their mind because it would be nice to vote for a sane left party. But the only option for key issues is Reform.

Wanderer,

Brexit is the biggest thing to have happened to the UK in recent history.

You think that would have happened without him?

Wanderer,

You comment is entirely based on the assumption I think voting for Reform will lead to reform being in power.

Farage is a slimeball but, like it or not, he is one of the most influential British politicians of our time. I hated him for Brexit but when it cones to FPTP and reducing immigration Reform clearly stands out as the party that is most likely to cause an change in those issues. I don’t think they will manage it themselves but voting for then shows what people care about and it continues to raise awareness. Voting for Green sounds like a vote more for green policies (which I am all for but I think the momentum is underway and there is no stopping it). Why would I vote libdem? I could vote Plaid which is closer to my left leaning views but I think we need more of a UK wide focus on immigration.

Who else should I vote for or what have I missed?

Wanderer,

They sound pretty similar. How hard can it be?

Just make the plant go in reverse.

Wanderer,

Go look at a video on ITER and see how hard that will be to fit inside a fission plant.

If ITER is a success they were planning to make a bigger one for commercial use.

Wanderer,

It’s certainly above both our heads but I did nuclear physics at university and I’m not sure what you are talking about is possible. I’m happy to see something otherwise but my limited understanding makes me think it is entirely impossible.

Wanderer,

Just to clarify I did a module on nuclear physics. I didn’t get a full degree in nuclear physics.

Wanderer,

I didn’t say anything if the sort. You’re understanding of how things work is wrong.

Imagine this. 10 factories in China that produce renewable goods for the entire world low enough that no other factories in the world can produce anything.

Or 10 factories in China. 10 in US, 10 in Europe. All producing renewables.

What’s better for the environment?

Wanderer,

I’m saying there needs to be demand for western products. Tariffs are a good way of doing that.

Africa, Asia and south America can still buy Chinese goods.

Wanderer,

Currently there is not enough factories in china to supply the world. More needs to be built. Building them in the west doesn’t destroy the ones in China.

Wanderer,

Its not that simple. Western money is going to the pockets of Chinese workers when it could be going to the pockets of western workers. The West might not even be taking advantage of it might be that they have been so naive that they have been losing money to China and investing back home could have been the cheaper option and also the option that spread up renewables globally.

It also gives then huge leverage on things like trade and war.

Wanderer, (edited )

In every culture I have read about they have men bonding together. It only seems like recently in the west male only bonding is though of almost as a crime.

I think male bonding is exceptionally important for happiness and development. Preventing male loneliness is more important than dealing with the issues of loneliness. But it seems more common to speak for men than listen to men.

Wanderer,

This has a huge potential to link up incredibly well with walking, cycling, micro mobility and trains and not to mention high density housing and/or green land. I hope that it is acted on.

Wanderer, (edited )

No mention of precision fermentation.

I think a huge shift is coming to our food. Even if it’s easy things like milk, olive oil, palm oil.

But I think it’s coming for meat and I think it’s going to be the best thing to happen to the environment ever.

Wanderer, (edited )

Also a lot of people don’t use trains because of the last mile problem. (And because in america specifically they are a lower standard than they were in the 1800’s).

But if people could get a lift to the station and then to work. Or get the train 10 times a week and get a lift to and from the supermarket once a week without needing to buy a car. That will be a huge reclamation of space.

Could even be like a 10 lane (total) motorway going to two train lines and a two lane road. Not to mention the space it frees on minor roads.

Where’s all those 4chan short stories about humans being the “monsters”/ kick ass.

It was written from the point of view of a deer being tracked by a human even when they were out of sight and smell the humans keep coming and they never got tired.

There was also ones written from the point of view of aliens.

Fuck I wish there was a forum version of 4chan. All the best stuff is on there.

Wanderer,

The plane drones are quieter aren’t they?

Also cars are noisy as fuck and everyone acts like that are perfect in every way.

Wanderer,

I went to Australia/New Zealand.

I now look 5 years younger. Not even exaggerating. I guess I look kinda young and I’m at an age where that’s possible. But way more people have commented that I look younger than I am than back home.
