I just tooted 🎺 earlier about finding myself behind a and one of the responses mentioned the dynamics etc.

I’ve never been a big fan of manuals (although I love shiftable automatics) but maybe I should drive the right one to understand why so many fans desire them.

I’ve driven a Golf Mk I manual (not GTi), a Mercedes-Benz (hated it), and a few other nondescript manual rentals in various guises.

If you had to drive ONE manual to understand, which would it be?

Ok nerds who understand Windows Partitions.

This is my laptop C: drive and its many partitions. It was created from an sysimage backup to a new replacement drive. I now want to dump the D: drive and recover its space on the C drive. Can this be done? If so, what is the precise sequence of delete, extend, etc.

@shoq try reading the guide linked below for some background understanding.

I haven’t done anything like this in a while, but from memory, it should be possible to just delete the D partition, and extend the C partition from there.

I wouldn’t touch the recovery partitions. I would ONLY attempt to extend C that is labeled “OS”.

@petes_bread_eqn_xls you need the right friends and neighbors to invite over. Then they invite you back. It’s much cheaper over time, and they won’t expect invitations to be daily, weekly, or even monthly! 🍻🥂

@shoq might depend on how you intend to use them.

I used a dock and dual monitor setup, so I could undock a Windows laptop and dock a Linux laptop, or vice versa, with the same keyboard.

The Linux laptop could also dual boot, so I could also just restart and switch OS.

If you want to use both at the same time, you’d have to have a software solution with a virtual machine, or some other hardware solution (separate monitors).

It’s been a while, but I’ve done it many times in the past. The recommended procedure is defragmenting several times (it gets faster after the first go) and then the Linux install procedure will allow you to resize the Windows partition, and create the new ones needed for Linux (including Swap).

@shoq Yes, AFAIK. Ubuntu and Mint were the two easiest to use, although I see MX is very popular now too, but I don’t know anything about MX.

If you have an older laptop hanging around, it would be a good way to try it out first.

Also, many distros (possibly all) will let you run them before installation to check how your hardware integrates, either from disk or other bootable media, if the laptop BIOS allows for booting from an SD card etc. (older ones didn’t).

@shoq @DenOfEarth and that failure always seems imminent. It’s like living with the sword of Damocles constantly menacing.

I can remember middle of the night sessions that lasted hours with tech support just to fix some stupid Windows user profile password synching issues. Hours! In the middle of the night! When I should be sleeping and dreaming of better things!

It works until it doesn’t, but when it doesn’t, it’s a frikkin’ nightmare of epic proportions.

I have always defended windows because I vehemently disliked the closed ecosystem of Apple. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t appreciate the benefits. And I confess, I naively assumed Windows would have evolved away from early windows by now. Nope. Same old windows and its myriad of byzantine complexities that probably costs the world trillions of dollars a year in lost productivity. But it will stay entrenched for a long time to come because, because… well, because everything sucks today.

@JamesDBartlett3 @ernie @shoq This has not been my experience. Apple hardware is supported for longer than any other. By phone, using the Apple Support app, or in stores.

Batteries and screen can be replaced for OEM replacements on vintage products until the device is officially on the obsolete list, which takes at least eight years. Until then, you will never be refused support.

@ernie @JamesDBartlett3 @shoq Eight years is easily achievable. Five is probably advisable because of CPU improvements.

Anyone who has used Linux or macOS knows how efficient they are with memory compared to Windows. Most users won’t see a performance difference between 8G and 16G. I use both configurations.

Comparable quality hardware for Windows is almost exactly the same price. Razer laptops etc.
