So honestly, you won't convince anyone by arguing with them. In the face of transphobic family, what you're best doing is simply showing that your support is strong and unflinching.

"I don't want to argue about this with you. I value trans folk and stand with them. I'm not going to debate their rights with you."

Congrats, welcome to the mod team. I leave the community in your hands :)

Blahaj Lemmy admin here. Let me know if you have any trouble. I will rain Hellfire down on anyone that causes you any issues!

Anyone else migrating from reddit?

The vast majority of users on lemmy and kbin are from the recent reddit exodus :)

The main alternative sub is !transgender

How have you found Lemmy as an LGBTQ+ person?

I abandoned Reddit over the weekend in advance of the blackout. As a trans woman, I tended to keep myself to myself in some very subject specific subreddits and avoided anti-LGBTQ+ sentiment for the most part (although certainly not homophobic language). Not ideal but it was manageable....

I'm so curious what Blåhaj statistics you were looking for!

It will be interesting when Hexbear rejoins the threadiverse. If only they could bring pronoun selection with them

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Well, they'll still have them, but they won't federate to everyone else or force other instances to use them :/

If you haven't found it yet, you can go to your settings and then find the blocks tab at the top of that page.

Would it be possible to enable this at the topic level but not the comment level?

That's actually a really good idea, and it addresses most of my concerns with the downvote system. However, I have no idea what is involved in making that happen in the backend, and don't want to throw even more work at @supakaity :)

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Out of the box, lemmy treats all votes as equal whether they're from the local instance or whether they've federated, and all the votes do is change the order of the posts in views that use scores as part of the calculations. (hot, active and top)

This change is simply a change in the weight of downvotes so they have less impact to the score of a post. It won't otherwise change their behaviour.

Also are other instance users currently able to downvote posts on this instance?

Depends what you mean. At the moment, our instance ignores downvotes that federate to us and we ignore downvotes when calculating the score of external posts that do use them. Which is to say, anything you view through this instance is in effect, viewed as if downvotes didn't exist.

However, instances that don't ignore downvotes calculate them in to the post score, which means they will sort posts in a different order.

So if you make a post to an external community that allows downvotes and then get downvoted, people on instances with downvotes will see them, but we won't

You can see more about the ranking formula at https://join-lemmy.org/docs/en/contributors/07-ranking-algo.html

This would be a global change to the way our instance displays downvotes. Anywhere downvotes would apply, they would still apply, but with 5 times less weight.

Transphobia won't reach anyone. I have zero tolerance for it, even the "just asking questions" sort. I will remove anything even hinting at transphobia, and ban/suspend anyone whose intentions I doubt.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Because they are often weaponised against marginalised folk.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Normally, downvotes federate in and out, just like upvotes. Because we've disabled them, our instance doesn't send out downvotes out, and ignores any that come in to us.

Anyway, I say either go all in or don’t allow them at all.

I don't think I'll ever be comfortable with allowing standard downvotes without modification. When given equal weight, they further marginalise the already marginalised.

I mean, technically Pathfinder, as it's not a d20 system, but that doesn't feel like it answers the spirit of the question

Unfortunately, I don't have any other games going at the moment, but I really want to try Thirsty Sword Lesbians, and somehow make a game of Exalted work (though I know it never will)

Even though it was twitter that spurred me joining the fediverse nearly a year ago, I was more of a reddit user than I ever was a twitter user, which is why it was one of the first things I came looking for when I joined the fediverse.

We spun up lemmy.blahaj.zone around 6 months ago so that I could scratch that itch, but it always lacked enough traffic to really do the job.

However now? The amazing growth and huge burst of activity? It's honestly shifted my perspective on what the future of the fediverse might be. I find myself really active on lemmy (and kbin before they had to go behind the Cloudflare CDN), even moreso than I was on the microblogging fediverse, because of its topic centric view.

I think the future of the fediverse might be one in which microblogging is "a" fediverse feature instead of the spotlight feature.

How do y'all deal with chest hair?

I've been on hrt for a couple of months and one of the hardest things I've had to deal with is my light skin + dark body hair. While I'm not out to the world yet it'd be nice to have a smooth chest without short, visible hairs after shaving, which leads to my question. Have any of you dealt with this and found someway to at...

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The downside to that combination is that your hair is more visible. The upside is that it responds really well to laser. It's not cheap, but you know that if and when you do get it, it's going to give you good results compared to many other folk

It's not a seperate universe, so much as a different lens through which to view the fediverse, and ny nature of being a different instance, it will also have it's own community.

If I could stick lemmy and kbin front ends on the same instance, and let people choose, I'd do that, but alas, it can't be done.

And personally, I prefer what kbin will be (though not what it is now) compared to lemmy. The tighter integration with the wider fediverse is a killer feature

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

At the moment there isn't much to do. We're ok absorbing the costs of our instances for now. We run a pretty heavily customised fork of Calckey on blahaj.zone, but our lemmy instance is almost (but not quite) straight out of the box.

Keep on chatting, and keep the community vibrant sounds like a non answer, but still, do that :)
