"Preparing for the Unthinkable: A Brief Guide to Digital Legacy Planning"

This is valuable, and a relatively easy read. In a nutshell, make sure you've got a plan for someone to get into ALL your accounts if you die suddenly.

Nice job laying this out by @adamengst

adamengst,

@davemark Thanks. I think it's harder to contemplate and talk about than to do. But it would be a huge help to loved ones should the unthinkable happen.

On the Ever-Increasing Accuracy of Weather Forecasts
https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/03/19/weather-forecasts

adamengst,

@daringfireball 7-day forecasts are still fantasies. Those of us who plan outdoor athletic events watch the forecasts carefully. There's no doubt that they're better, but more than a few days is just hand-waving at generalities.

@vnglst Pong Wars is very cool, but it would benefit from a randomizer at the start so it doesn't always end up at this stuck point 32 minutes in.

adamengst,

@kdawson @vnglst That said, I have no idea of the best way to submit this to Github, so I'll let someone else do that.

adamengst,

@daringfireball Why would NetNewsWire or the like opt out of Apple's status quo? If they're just free, there's no win in taking the red pill.

adamengst,

@jsnell @daringfireball If the app is entirely free, it's hard to see an alternative marketplace being compelling. And as far as a spin-off goes, if they want to do that so badly, what's stopping them from setting up a second account/company that can take the red pill? But we'll just have to see how many devs feel the red pill is worth it—I'll be surprised if it's all that many given the onerous restrictions.

adamengst,

@siracusa @jsnell @daringfireball I'm sure Apple frowns on it, but it feels like a hard thing to enforce with independent legal entities.

Anyone writing anything, but especially anything technical or inside industry: your super power is to expand and explain acronyms on first use. If you’re writing something worthwhile, it will hang around and there will always be someone reading it that is new to the concepts. Be kind to those future readers.

adamengst,

@marczak Always worth remembering, though many acronyms are better known than their expansions. No one wants to go down the rabbit hole surrounding MAC address or UDP. :-)

adamengst,

@marczak I find that I run into that a lot when writing, so it's always worth explaining the acronym, but the expansion often doesn't help (and may even confuse the issue).

I'm dying to know the story behind how this Pennsylvania family business that makes potato, onion, and cabbage bags can come up with text like this.

@AskPippa Total radiant health doesn't include the acne.

Huh! Apple changed a quote in its behind-the-scenes article from:

“We were able to get the same complex shots with iPhone 15 Pro Max,” says Oakes. “It’s amazing to see that the quality from a device that is so small and so portable can rival a large $20,000 camera.”

to

“We were able to get the same complex shots with iPhone 15 Pro Max,” says Oakes. “Everything is there to be an extension of someone’s vision or personality. The image quality of iPhone definitely democratizes the access.”

I've found two substantive and reliable ways to use LLM AIs:

  • Give me code for specific Web page things that I have forgotten how to code or never knew how (it will spit out HTML, CSS, and JS that I can then adapt)
  • Summarize large amounts of text, like interview transcripts, to make it easier for me to find relevant details

Related, AI-based transcription tools dramatically reduce my workload on interviews.

adamengst,

@craiggrannell @glennf Brainstorming titles or trying to dredge up the right word has been my big win with LLMs so far too. Though I almost never use what they give me—it's about triggering my brain in new ways. They've also helped with small bits of code since I do so little of that these days.

Congrats to @siegel and the rest of the @bbedit crew for 30 years of BBEdit! If you've somehow managed to avoid getting it for all these years, there's a 30-hour sale pricing it at $30 (use code "BBEDIT30").

And for those who just want something to remember the occasion, a snazzy pin.

I've just found that copying styled text with graphics from Google Docs is now replacing the previous image links with what I think is base64 code. This makes it impossible to copy anything from Google Docs to other sites, which I did with Discourse and MailChimp. Anyone know more about this, or have thoughts about workarounds? The closest I've found is using Google Docs's Share feature to publish to a Web page and copy that. But then all links go through Google if I don't fix them with grep.
