you know that feeling when you've been making notes and not reviewing them for the past 4 months, and now you have about 6 days left until your exam, so you decide to go back to your notes
and you realise, even though you spent hours in each lecture writing those notes down, they're not just shit notes but absolutely useless. how the fuck am i supposed to revise from bullet points
i should have just tried making flashcards for each lecture from the beginning instead of doing this
@cnx if i dont take notes then i'm doodling or something because i genuinely can't just sit there and concentrate on a lecture for 2 hours. and it stops me from just going on my phone
everyone wish me good luck, i have two group assignments due in today, i've done most of the work out of anyone in both groups, and i haven't finished either one yet
i'm already sleep deprived and heavily caffeinated but im so ready to fucking demolish these assignments
i'm doing a masters degree and it has a placement attached to it, so it's an 18-month course
so when i apply for student finance, they give me a payment schedule that goes all the way up to april 2025 because they automatically class it as a 2 year course
the university wanted it all paid within 1 year, but i told them my student finance is more spread out so they changed their payment schedule for me
but now they're saying i can't do the placement if i don't pay in full before august?? like maybe tell me that at the start of the course you fucking arseholes
haven't been reading a lot lately. unfortunately, i tend to hyperfocus on specific hobbies, so reading took a backburner as i went fully into eurovision
HOWEVER! i thought i would just talk about The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez a little bit. i've only read around a quarter of it, but it's shaping up to be one of the best books i've ever read! it's a dark fantasy where a god escaped from her prison and two guys help her escape while being chased. the prose, the pacing, the characters, the worldbuilding... everything about this book ticks all of my boxes
the second book i want to read this month is Empire of Silence by Christopher Ruocchio. this book is actually part of a series that was recommended by the same person who recommended The Spear Cuts Through Water (hi mishal if you're reading this), so i'm very excited to read this. content warnings and description here: https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/00dcdfc6-b4c8-4513-9023-58127155412c
i think my intense eurovision obsession has mostly passed now, and i can devote more time to reading, so hopefully i can finish a book this month!
anyway i hope anyone else reading any books this month reads something good
@kalayo i know it's amazing! i keep picking it up, being enthralled, then putting it down and forgetting how good it was and then procrastinating instead of reading it :neocat_laugh_sweat:
I Contain Multitudes is a book about the world of microbes - the microbes in our bodies and the microbes in the life around us. It explores how microbes can kill us or protect us and how fragile the line is between those two.
This is honestly a great book if you want to learn about microbes. It has absolutely changed how I look at them, now that I know about the nuances of how they work and how complex our relationships are with them. Admittedly, some of the stuff Ed Yong talked about did fly over my head, but for the most part this is a very well researched book written for a layperson with a basic understanding of biology. I really enjoyed this one and I highly recommend it!
@cnx i'm glad you liked it! he has another book that i might read at some point called "an immense world", and it's about animal senses. if you're interested. 👀
