You gotta think...

If a star ship keeps its "number" when a new one of the same name replaces it...

Like 1701 -> 1701-A, etc.

That means they created 1700 star ships not call "Enterprise" first (after "NX-01").

Why would they do that?

What was the massive lul in ships called "Enterprise" caused by?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk maybe when they switched to the NCC classifications, the Federation was big enough that Earth got assigned the 17xx series to name, and other planets got other series.

(*) I suspect this theory wouldn't stand up to any trekkie with deep Federation history knowledge!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk in reality, I think ship registries are as rigourously defined to Star Trek writers as stardates are, so they just pick numbers that sound good.

Having seemingly solved the inverter issue (some config poking seems to stopped it objecting to our excessively high grid voltage), I've now entered the traditional phase of new PV ownership, namely that of "resenting that I don't yet have the paperwork I need, and am therefore giving the grid free electricity" 🙂

@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

Hmm. Ok my excitement over solar has been slightly tempered by our inverter shutting down because (I think) it doesn't like the fact that Western Power are shoving 255v down our throats.

This is going to be a tedious fix isn't it?

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

Ok, grid voltage has dropped down to 250v and it's back alive again.

Hopefully the (so far very helpful) installers can figure out who to shout at 😉

Quick question for other solar panel owners - how long before you stop just staring at the control panel watching all the pretty graphs? 😃 ☀️

@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

After years of saying "that roof is perfect for solar panels", our roof is now covered with solar panels.

I mean, they're not wired into anything yet, but they look very pretty.

ahnlak,

@bexxi I am, of course, now resenting every last photon that hits them and doesn't give me free electricity 😉

I'm resisting getting into an argument in the local Facebook group.

I feel this entitles me to a cake, or something.

So, someone, (who is welcome to own up up in reply), wanted to send something as some staff did a good job. We do try!

There are a load of legal rules on bribery, honest, it is mental, but we don't discourage small gifts like this.

The issue is what?

  • food? Is it safe? allergies?
  • drink?
  • stuff of value?

People have allergies, have food/weight issues, have alcohol issues, it can so easily go wrong.

I have to say "customised mugs" is the best neutral choice yet - well done!

Ooh, I appear to have (slightly accidentally) logged my first Subject Access Request.

(all I did was reply, rather snarkily, to a psuedo-spammer asking where they'd got the obviously-made-up email address from...)

@gadgetoid I should probably finish something before 'investing' in the new shiny....

Latest bit of fun, but small, bit of C code...

iMessage (from which the screen shot comes) copes remarkably well with them.

When a specification casually says to remove accents to compare letters just A to Z, FFS. Ended up scanning the whole Unicode XML file to find A-Z type letters.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@revk ok I have to ask - why do A, B and O get special treatment? Is this a special blood-related font?

Where do people get their SSL certs at reasonable prices these days? I'd like to move some (mostly Wordpress) sites to shared hosting at Blacknight, from a VPS so Let's Encrypt would no longer be suitable

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@james most shared hosting integrates Let's Encrypt well these days (and if they don't I'd worry what else they aren't doing!)

ahnlak,

@james they'll be in for a shock when they find out that hosting is an international market, then 😉

@aaisp possibly a stupid question, but are your eSIMs moveable?

For example, if I went on holiday and wanted an alternate eSIM for roaming, would I be able to put your old eSIM back on after?

I only ask because whenever I've been roaming they've been very focused on the whole "it's a one time thing, once you take it off your phone it's gone forever".

(hmm, this also assumes my phone can only have one eSIM, which I ... am not sure about)

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@aaisp yeah I realised after I asked that my phone would handle multiple eSIMs, so I'm probably worrying over nothing ;-)

@revk that's the new police station, right? Maybe falls under the "no drones over jails" rules (that I... assume groundlessly to exist!)?

@hatter @revk I'm 95% sure they don't have a helipad. This is semi-rural Wales, after all :)

Wordpress being used for Ecommerce just makes my head get confused.

Just use an actual E-commerce software!

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@Ryanteck the range of free e-commerce offerings is ... limited.

People also like familiarity. I wouldn't do it myself, but I do understand it.

ahnlak,
@ahnlak@kavlak.uk avatar

@Ryanteck doesn't shopify start at like £25 a month before you do anything, though?

ahnlak,

@Ryanteck well anyone adding 50 plugins to their WP deserves everything they get 😉
