There is an art to resistance. An intentionality that strives to interrupt the ugliness of genocide and simultaneously enact beautiful alternatives through all sorts of do-it-ourselves direct actions, including art.

What difference does art make?

Like so many of our anarchic solidarity efforts, it may at best only slow the killing machine momentarily, not stop it. That palpable sense of the limitations of the massive resistance going on across the globe fills so many of us with deep wells of despair. Art can aid in nonetheless continually illustrating a social critique and social vision, drawing out paths from “the world that is” to “the world that could be.” Without that, we are truly lost. All is truly lost.

Moreover, when we engage in collaborative art-making, we also make rebellious room for sociality and connection on our autonomous terms—for communal grieving and rage, communal processing and even joy, or what someone recently called “tender heart spaces.” We find and (better) get to know each other as we hand-craft creations that speak to our solidarity and dreams. We revive ourselves a bit via the somatic aspects of art-making and delight in seeing what each other has made. And often from there, we go on to self-organize other forms of resistance or weave tighter bonds related to the resistance we’re already collectively involved in. Mostly, we are reminded that we do indeed have the power to imagine and craft other lifeways while we fight for life.

This Sunday, February 18, from 11 am to 1 pm, @shadow_patterns will bring a whole slew of art-making supplies to @firestorm as inspiration for “Radical Imagining for a Free Palestine”—such as the example pictured here from a recent community gathering in solidarity with Palestinians. Feel free to bring additional art materials to use/share. We’ll also chat about ideas related a creative commitment to resistance.

All ages welcome! Masks required (free ones available).

I adore being queer and polyamorous— it is truly a beautiful way to be and the way I love is ever more abundant. And yes, while it’s true the trials were torturous, I’d do it all over again— I found my family I am thankful everyday for this life I fought to have.

I question my role in making things that feel useless sometimes, and sometimes I feel paltry in my capacities…but then I remember that singular truth that I come home to. That I'm a creative being at heart and that actually we are all artists, we are all desperate and joyous creatures who want to craft meaningful and emotional things.

But we are discouraged from our highest creative, intellectual, and joyful pursuits under a system that means to not only commodify and monetize every aspect of existence, but kill life for a profit margin.

And if anything, art is far from a useless task--it is a badge of survival, of persistence, of expression, of exploration and potential... and the celebration of life itself.

And that is always priceless and important ❤️

To my younger self, the kid who almost gave up on everything:

I am so sorry it took so long.

But we did it.

We found and made a home, a real one. Nobody will throw a dish at your head or call you slurs. Nobody will tell you that you’re worthless or won’t amount to anything. Nobody does horrible unthinkable things to you anymore. In fact, you have a whole team and network of people who love you without any bloodshed.

You make art that people find hope in. You have lovers and friends who adore you and take care of you. They appreciate your esoteric knowledge and they admire you, never denigrate you.

We healed, and we escaped from hell. I love you. I’m so sorry you nearly died trying to get here. I’m so proud of us 💖

A new digital zine about unrealized crushes with a dash of queerness and being haunted by adoration!

It’s a digital zine release— something light and fresh for tomorrow!

Description for the Zine release:

“Love at its unrefined and unrequited is indeed disastrous. In the light of being utterly smitten, the word “crush” seems an inadequate word. So does “infatuation”. With both profoundly ridiculous and profoundly vexing measures done to restrain the indomitable heart’s yearning requests, one could only realistically deal with it as all artists do— make something potently and hopelessly romantic about it.

“Flirting with Disaster,” is a work that accomplishes some small inch of unrequited relief through the most traditional of lovesick means: dabble of poetry, a pile of frustrated monologues, a playlist of relatable love songs, and a smidgen (just a smidgen!) of reliving the glow of such adoration intoxication.

“Meandering upon longings that have persisted through years, Airidescence details the intimate notions of a heart that refuses to quit. In this process, it follows that recognizing the problem is part of the first step… but figuring out how to resolve such ardent pleas is a much more arduous dispute. This is an internal struggle that must be fought just as hard as one does with real life weaponry.”

Update 2024:

Title Slide: 2024. A. Airidescence. Slide 1: Welcome to a new year! It’s been quite a journey for me to get to 2024, but I am quite delighted to be here. My body is still not the most functional specimen. This, along with fighting with the healthcare/medical system is a regular battle, but I am determined—perhaps the most self-assured I’ve been thus far in my life. I have been unable to catch up on correspondence (I just really started) or do as much as I wanted to for the past months due to being bedridden with pain episodes or exhaustion for large periods of time, (and the time spent being not bedridden has been doing self care: basic domestic labor, spending time with family, or making art for my own health).
Slide 2. But there is great news. I have reached a major plateau. I seemed to have reached a more even mix of functioning and not functioning. I have been focusing on taking care of myself and allowing myself to bask in love, joy, rest, quiet, and replenishment. Before, I was taking things day by day in a frantic dash for survival— hurting myself in the process. Now, I am taking things day by day in a much more methodical and considerate way—giving my body the kindness it needs. Additionally, in this process,I have been creating some intensely joyful and healing pieces of art. I am so proud of the progress I am making.
Slide 3. So for this year, in that very vein, I am intending on tying loose ends in sections, releasing new zines, slowly opening up the shop in incremental stages, and also gradually entering back into my animation/film practice, and other things to be introduced as I progress. All of this, because it is more sustainable for my health and also invites a meticulous intentionality and pleasure to my creative endeavors. I am ecstatic to release and share what I believe is some of my most technically proficient and joyful work yet. Thank you for your perpetual consideration and continual kindness. I am forever grateful. Let’s spend this year with gentle persistence—ensuring to cultivate community, rest, and recovery for the lot of us. — Airidescence

September/October 2023 ANNOUNCEMENTS ✨:

Hello everyone!

Thank you, again, immeasurably, for your aid and well wishes—I really cannot thank you enough. To all the people who have helped me in the past few months, my gratitude is insufficiently expressed in words. It’s been an incredibly tumultuous time, but I’m glad to say that it is over. I have enough funds to cover my survival needs and that’s really all I need.

I am now settled in my new environment and mailing the last of the September orders between now and the first week of October.

On to the news. (Content Warning: abuse, suicide attempt mentions - skip to section 3)

The past 3 years have been simultaneously very good to me and extremely punishing.

One one hand, I’ve grown immensely. I’ve met some wonderful people and comrades, gained new insights, hopefully have done some good in the world, and artistically expanded. I have become an eager researcher and improved on a variety of fronts.

On the flip side, I also have endured some substantial hardship in escaping abusive relationship(s), previous multiple suicide attempts, worsening physical health problems, having my home stability completely upturned due to choices which were outside of my control (resulting in moving 3 times in the span of justs this year for example), and multiple family deaths.

In the face of these things, I have persevered. This perseverance, without adequate recovery and rest though, was not without consequences. The health issues that I was having had to take a back seat due to being put under conditions which greatly impacted my home life stability and other aspects of my health. The past few months, despite maybe seeming restful from the periphery, were very much not.

I am currently at a point where it generally hurts to walk or run or bike. There are also times of severe pain episodes where I cannot walk at all. This is pertinent to mention because I bike or walk to the post office as I do not own a car. It would be much more grueling to endure the inadequate public transit and Uber is too expensive for such simple trips. You can see why this is a bit of an issue mailing things.

So, as my body is increasingly malfunctioning and I actually do have the opportunity to rest and focus on repair and recovery, I have made a decision.

After much consideration and assessment, I am closing my shop for a month in October.

6:
During this time I will be…
• Catching up on correspondence.
• Ameliorating mistakes I may have made with the shop or my art or the post service may have made during this period of severe cognitive and physical dysfunction.
• Promoting what events and causes I can.
• Getting my life in order.
• Art and joy posting (without the pressure of money) for my healing: animations, writing, painting, drawing, self-images.
• Research.
• But most critically, I am ADAMANTLY PUTTING MY HEALTH FIRST.

7:
I am excited for a chance to rest and recover, after years of near relentless damage and turmoil. Even with the grief, I am happy and mentally better than I have ever been. It has really been quite a journey and I am looking forward to this particular era— of tying up loose ends, of new beginnings, and of the much fought for personal tranquility.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for everything.

Love,
Airidescence
