Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr I live in a little tourist town in northern Michigan.

Pros: I know my neighbors and trust them with my kids, the woods, the lake, everyone minds their own business, able to be involved locally volunteering, cute little library (I used to be the librarian there)

Cons: lake fronters and their wealth trying to kick all the rest of us out, very red area, racism in schools (one of the reasons we pulled our kids), a lot of guns around, side by sides

@RickiTarr They are the bane of my existence right now. Our local politics is something to watch right now.

There was an owl hooting last night. It was loud so it must have been right in the backyard. Scared the dog and she was barking every time the owl hooted for like an hour. The owl would hoot, the dog would bark over and over again. 😂

It's been 10 years since Flint's water crisis started--all because some white supremacist GOP politicians wanted to (or claimed to want to, given the predictable outcome, it's a safer bet that the damage to the Black community was their real goal) save money on water infrastructure. Legal victories have been won and money set aside for compensation to those injured, but Flint's Black residents mostly haven't seen a dime. And they still pay more for their water than most other city residents in the USA, still suffer health impacts from lead poisoning, and are still witnessing the economic hollowing out of their community. Excellent article:

Capital B News isn't on the Fediverse, but you can follow their RSS feed here at @capitalbnews.org@rss-parrot.net. Plus, if you follow the link above, you'll see that they're doing reader surveys. I forget how I discovered them, but it was just a couple months ago, and since then I've been consistently impressed with the quality of reporting and writing. Check it out!

@SallyStrange I'm in Michigan and most people have no clue that Flint still doesn't have clean water. As a result of all of this, their public school system is in shambles. People just think it's Flint so who cares. It's sick. The people living there deserve so much better than what Michigan has given them.

This does not surprise me one bit, but the fact that this happens to the tune of over $3 million dollars is abhorrent.
