AI generated images always make my skin crawl because they're always slightly off, often in the subtle way of people being a little too "perfect" according to some western ideal. The smiles and eyes are always a bit too large. It's uncanny.

So I'm asking other lefties to stop using them in their posts advertising events or actions, or just generally trying to show some idea. We don't always need images, and certainly not when it boils to oceans to make them.

The funniest thing about Donald Trump is that he is so routinely honest in public—“I will be a dictator,” “there will be violence if I lose”—and yet the majority of people are so concerned about decorum, so terrified of appearing to overreact, that the American political system just plods along as if he hadn’t said what he said.

@stevewfolds @HeavenlyPossum @TomSwirly Edward Abbey was a racist who loved borders, so let's maybe avoid quoting him when talking of the ills of mindless conformity.

@stevewfolds @HeavenlyPossum @TomSwirly

Taking a quote from a book on your shelf, Confessions of a Barbarian page 307, what do you think he meant when he said this?

> According to the morning newspaper, the population of America will reach 267 million by 2000 AD. An increase of forty million, or about one-sixth, in only seventeen years! And the racial composition of the population will also change considerably: the white birth rate is about sixty per thousand females, the Negro rate eighty-three per thousand, and the Hispanic rate ninety-six per thousand.
>
> Am I a racist? I guess I am. I certainly do not wish to live in a society dominated by blacks, or Mexicans, or Orientals. Look at Africa, at Mexico, at Asia.
>
> Garrett Hardin compares our situation to an overcrowded lifeboat in a sea of drowning bodies. If we take more aboard, the boat will be swamped and we’ll all go under. [We must] militarize our borders [against illegal immigration]. The lifeboat is listing.

Flashing Android devices is so much easier than it used to be. Blessed are the nerds who make this possible.

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@kzimmermann Installing Debian is more of a pain than flashing a custom ROM, IMO

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@kzimmermann Lineage is probably the easiest. Graphene is probably the most secure if you have the right device. I haven't played with others, but you can get a sense by reading install docs. More detail and pedantry is generally a good sign

Fitness nerds of the Fedi. Is there an FOSS app for iOS/Android that you recommend for simple things like basic fitness tracking? Mostly interested in seeing distance, speed, and maybe route profiles.

It’s popular to compare the behavior of the Israeli state in Gaza to that of Nazi Germany, probably because that is, for most people, the historical touchstone for this kind of violence.

But people don’t need to look that far away or that far back for an analogy. The closest comparison is to Israel’s neighbor and contemporary, Syria under the Bashar al-Asad regime.

Asad’s forces also use mass murder of civilians. They use sieges and starvation. They kidnap and they torture. They destroy infrastructure and bomb entire cities into ruin and rubble. They do all of this with the barest sanction from the international community and with the active support of major regional and global powers.

@HeavenlyPossum I think people have the NSDAP as the ultimate evil, and it completely blinds them to everything else. I see so many people arguing like "while it's bad what Israel does, it's not genocide because they don't have death camps." As if someone has to meet the NSDAP bar to be evil and everything else is just to be tut-tutted at.

Doing reading on the various ways people do ultralight in the less hospitable parts of """europe""" and have once again come across multiple posts/threads of Americans who tried to do Sierra-summer-style ultralight in alpine Norway and got 150% rekt

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

I'm not harshing too much, because unfamiliar place etc. (if I did Sierra hiking, I would probably be hilariously over packed), but if you underpack when it's cold and wet, you die (whereas overpacked and warm is just annoying).

"The world is dying, and you're thinking about tarps and trees?"

We all cope in different ways I guess

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@lzg Look, I have this tarp that does well enough, but I haven't had to set it up in high wind yet (luck???), and I'm a tall lad, so it's just a bit short. Do I make my own? My current has a min pitch height of 110cm, but maybe I can get away with a lower profile. I guess if I made my own I'd probably switch from a groundcloth to a bivvy too because the open footbox is kinda unacceptable. Or maybe I just make an extra long tarp so I have a whole half meter down by my feet.

> Nelson lifts up his trousers to reveal the tag, wrapped around his leg, like a giant gray leech. He chokes down tears as he describes the impact the device has had on his life. “It’s depressing,” he says, being under constant surveillance. “Right through this process, it’s like I’m not a human anymore.”

Perpetual dehumanization, what governments do best.

If Biden loses—or, more likely, if Trump coups his way into power—I fully expect that a lot of liberals will devote more of their energy into yelling at people online for not voting hard enough than in resisting the fascism they keep warning us is imminent.

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@Uair @HeavenlyPossum I promise you they don't otherwise a lot more people would be caught for their crimes and there'd be a lot less emphasis on building networks of informants.

Assange shouldn't go to prison because no one should. Him being extradited and sent to prison will be bad for journalists.

Deifying him and holding up his work as honest investigative journalism is, however, bullshit. He is a hack propagandist, a rapist, and certainly not a leftist nor someone anarchists should celebrate.

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@lumpentrashbandit Yeah there was some similar shit with Barrett Brown being held up as an anarchist figure (by anarchists, mind you) which seemed to boil down to "He doesn't like the government and went to prison in relation to that."

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

Uhh people are boosting this, so obligatory:

DDoSecrets are actual anarchists doing the things WikiLeaks claims to still be doing, so maybe give them some love and/or coin.

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@HeavenlyPossum @lumpentrashbandit I mean... his "kill cops" stunt at that protest was admittedly pretty funny, but he's moved through circles I also move through, and I have very much kept my distance because he is a disaster and was a wake of damage behind him cause by himself and his followers.

hakan_geijer,
@hakan_geijer@kolektiva.social avatar

@pkw @HeavenlyPossum @lumpentrashbandit He has worked with the American far right, dead named Chelsea Manning who was one of the sources who made him famous, and "apolitically" dumped the Clinton emails which may have cost her the election thus bringing Trump to power. He could have just waited a few weeks! He's a rapist. Idk. There's got to be a whole litany of other things I haven't even kept track of.

@Wen Prisons don't achieve their ends and exist mostly to punish the poor or those the State doesn't like. So yeah. Prisons shouldn't exist.
