What is the intended meaning when someone is using:

  • “I agree” vs “I don’t disagree”
  • “Good idea” vs “This is not a bad idea”

I don’t think they are intended to mean the same thing even if at the logic level they are the same.

I read @gruber article about the new MacBook Pros. I'm not sure I got what he'll get. The reason I'm wondering about this is that I feel I have similar "requirements" and I would've appreciated his thoughts based on experiencing one of the machines first hand.

@gruber I guess what I'm wondering given you are looking for more RAM: going with the Pro CPU and get the 36GB RAM or go to the Max CPU which comes default with 36GB RAM? Thank you

@george @thomas_liekens @rugby I believe RSA 🇿🇦 is the favorite. I wish for a great game though.

I'd like another great game to add to the list of of the great games from this World Cup: Ireland - South Africa, Ireland - New Zealand, France - South Africa, Fiji - England.

I struggle with giving people praise. There's always this little voice in my head that says I'm being presumptuous, that I'm not good enough at <whatever> to be commenting on others' efforts, that they don't give a damn what I think, that it will come across as patronizing. I try to err on the side of praising anyway, but I never feel 100% comfortable. Anyone else?

I also have trouble accepting praise, but that's a whole different set of issues.

al3x,
@al3x@hachyderm.io avatar

@Obdurodon I have decided a long time ago to lean heavily on the verbose thanks & praises.

  1. It all started with me wishing to get any sort of feedback. Even a thank you.
  2. I read quite a bit about feedback loops (positive, negative, etc.)
  3. Through 1on1, I've got confirmation that others are looking for feedback as a form of guidance all the time
  4. I haven't met anyone yet who told me to stop doing it.

TIL: Neovide https://neovide.dev

“This is a simple, no-nonsense, cross-platform graphical user interface for Neovim (an aggressively refactored and updated Vim editor). Where possible there are some graphical improvements, but functionally it should act like the terminal UI.”

Experimenting with different window managers:

  1. yabai (tiling) with 2 desktops (I need one on which yabai is not active; this might be
  2. stage manager with a single desktop

al3x,
@al3x@hachyderm.io avatar

@ctietze Interesting. My experience so far:

  1. there are times when I feel like automatic tiling. It’s like a means to preserve the existing setup.
  2. I am using Hammerspoon with some home made scripts for predefined window positioning (similar to Moom I’d imagine)
  3. there are times when tiling just doesn’t work.

@Migueldeicaza Many times avoiding that within both small and large companies is really difficult. It’s a “company smell” (IMO it’s similar to “code smells”)

This is awesome! Full text search has come to Mastodon, and it's being rolled out in a responsible way.

I know full text search is a hot-button issue. For journalists, researchers and many others, FTS is essential. Plenty of others have good reason to keep their content unsearchable.

If you're in the latter category, you don't need to take any action. Your toots will remain unsearchable just as they were before.

For the rest, please manually change the default so your toots will be searchable. This will address a major shortcoming that has kept a huge number of fedi holdouts from joining.

To do that, go to Preferences > Public Profile and select the Privacy and Reach tab. Then check the Include public posts in search results.

*** Edit: sorry, my initial post told y'all to click the wrong box. Fixed.

In the last few days I had to use quite a bit a diff tool on my macOS.

  1. bbdiff sort of worked but didn’t feel intuitive
  2. FileMerge (through opendiff) felt like the beginning of macOS.
  3. Kaleidoscope felt the most intuitive and friendly.

I haven’t tried vimdiff as I don’t know if it works on folders. I should though.

I’m considering upgrading to Kaleidoscope 4, but the list of new features and the transition to subscription are not very convincing.

al3x,
@al3x@hachyderm.io avatar

@czottmann Can the diff tool be used on random dirs or only with Git?

@whynothugo how does that work? Could you briefly describe a common flow?

  1. I'm looking at source file x. See reference to y. 2) navigate to file y.

@whynothugo Makes sense. This is my usual workflow too.

In this particular case I had a project where the structure was important and I wanted to be able to compare different subfolders.

I hoped I'll get that done using netrw. Because I'm not used to it, I haven't been able to.

I might be wrong, but I feel this is too much. Is it the result of the App Store and the abundance of apps?
