Everyone keeps sending me that news article about the German railway trying to hire a DOS and Windows 3.1 expert. You don’t understand- that is my whole job. That’s literally my normal day to day cybersecurity career.

alexlomas,

@cybergibbons @hacks4pancakes The time I had to maintain an internet-facing Windows 2003 box well past EOL until the space probe it ran crashed into Jupiter.

alexlomas,

@jernej__s There were multiple institutes involved in coordinating flight and science output. It was too difficult to IP restrict without the possibility of breaking some of those channels.

Genuinely first tier reporting from the FT on HMRC vs Walkers Crisps that brings you this:

“Nominative determinism is not a characteristic of snack foods: calling a snack food “Hula Hoops” does not mean that one could twirl that product around one’s midriff, nor is “Monster Munch” generally reserved as a food for monsters.”

And this pie chart.

Go read it, it’s wonderful.

Just this one.

I wrote up a quick thing on cockpit doors automatically opening in a cabin depressurisation.

We'd found the pressure sensors when looking at flight deck door lock controllers a few years ago but didn't want to draw attention to it then. But it seems this behaviour isn't actually that well known amongst pilots so it seemed timely to write it up.

Sat in the cold and dark (voluntarily) because the UK doesn’t have enough electricity or something.

Group chat has just taught me about the existence of “Clamato juice” and honestly, bring on the asteroid.

V2L is super cool.

I think once we get V2G it will be even cooler, maybe.

In the meantime, it's fantastic to know I have a 60kWh battery and decent size true sine mains inverter sat in my parking space should we lose power.

Someone on a EV page posted this neat setup :

alexlomas,

@bloor This is precisely how Powerwall does it.

My Mum just tested positive for covid (in the UK). I’m hoping she can get an antiviral such as Paxlovid or similar, but the UK is such a mess at the moment that I am concerned it might be difficult.

(She likely caught it at a village WI meeting. Or to rephrase, a meeting of elderly, high-risk women 🤦🏼‍♀️)

alexlomas,

@elizabethtasker As someone also in a high risk group I found the Paxlovid process difficult to navigate. But the first port of call was the GP and a nurse practitioner did the referral to a triage team and then a pharmacist who arranged delivery. It took 4 days by which point I was feeling a lot better.

alexlomas,

@elizabethtasker OK, that is good news! Fingers crossed.

If they do start Paxlovid I would recommend chewing gum or sweets be on hand, the persistent bitter metallic taste is horrible.

Does anyone use reMarkable or Kindle Scribe?

I cannot find any stylus with a right feel to it, any advice?

alexlomas,

@maldr0id Another vote for the Remarkable. I would say the line resolution is a bit jaggy if you zoom in but it’s fine for note taking. Good “paper” feel.

Not one, but two hedgehogs this evening.
I think we have thought there were for a while but the first proof!
