@breakingtaps Great video on the NASA and SpaceX thermal tiles.

I now know what airbag smells like. Not the way I wanted to start my week.

I saw a TikTok recommending putting olive oil in cappuccino. I love olive oil and I love cappuccino, so I was super excited to try it. Can't get over how well it did not work. Somehow combining two things I like turned into undrinkable coffee.

FishermansEnemy,

@malwaretech that sounds like that “bulletproof coffee” trend from a few years ago.
What could go wrong with blending coffee, butter and oil then necking it as soon as you wake up.

People can be so kind to moderators when they dislike a moderation decision.

Also, other may want to be wary of this person.

FishermansEnemy,

@jerry and it’s thanks to moderation that I have no idea why this guy is being shit canned, which is exactly how moderation should work. I have not had to deal with this guy, and what was I assume a very toxic individual.

This is the internals of the ceiling lamp the previous owners of the apartment installed which turned out to have a surprise bluetooth speaker the neighbors accidentally connected to. I can barely reach it and I don’t have a lot of tools. I would like to keep the lamp part functional while killing the speaker. Can I just cut the exposed wires?

FishermansEnemy,

@0xabad1dea It looks like power goes into the speaker body then out to the lights, so it looks like you can't.
If you're lucky it will split internally to the speaker and lights, so you may be able to cut there. If it is as cursed as it looks there will be a single SoC handling lights and tunez.

What is the true purpose of "baby on board" signs some people stick in their rear windscreens?

I was trying to evaluate whether it might be as an aid to the fire service; i.e. knowing they may also need to rescue a child. But... they don't say how many children, and also, most cars with "baby on board" signs that I see.... don't have a child in them, so maybe could cause a rescue person to waste their time looking for a child that isn't present?

FishermansEnemy,

@bloor I suspect that there is no other "true purpose" than signaling to the driver behind to please drive less like a c*nt by appealing to their humanity.

FishermansEnemy,

@bloor That assumes that the solution that is being presented is the best way to do that, rather than the cheapest way to sell people a plastic square.

I personally use them to judge people who use their phone while driving, as they are specifically calling out that they are driving dangerously while children are in their care.

Walking around in public at 10am sipping from a ⅓L bottle of Club Mate makes me feel really self conscious.

It looks a lot like beer...

FishermansEnemy,

@ryanc That takes me back to my first B-sides in 2010 when I was introduced to club mate. They had 1L bottles they were giving away for free. It was a very hot summer in London and I was very thirsty, and I also had no idea how much caffine it contained. I was almost coffeeFry.jpg and think I gave myself heart palpitations.

Can someone just read this for me, and tell me if you think they have made a very obvious and silly mistake, over and over again?

FishermansEnemy,

@simonzerafa @bloor I think the issue is the use of £ as an additional unit here. so £/MW/H is perhaps more correct, or less inaccurate?

FishermansEnemy, to FormulaE

So used to be on Channel 5 in the UK, then on Channel 4 and YouTube. Now it's moved to TNT sports which means you need to pay £30 a month to watch was was free. This is more than F1 want for you to have a dedicated channel.
If they think this is going to help get people watching Formula E, they are very mistaken. I certainly won't be watching this season.

FishermansEnemy,

@yatil Discovery+ "premium", not the cheap tier.

FishermansEnemy,

@yatil Agreed. This is such a boneheaded move. I can only see it damaging the public engagement with the sport.

I'm seeing a lot of click-bait articles with the headline "Nasa picks of signal from 10 million miles away", with the worst offending being "Nasa admits recieving signal from 10 million miles away in space". The obvious implications are that this may be E.T. Here's what actually happened:

  • NASA (It's an acronym) placed the Deep Space Optical Communications experiment on the Pysche mission being sent to the astroid belt.
  • This is a technology demontrator to determine if lasers could be used as a high bandwidth communications link between deep space missions and Earth.
  • They did in fact manage to receive communication with this experiment. This is a Good Thing as the current radio based Deep Space Network is currently near to capacity, and has fairly low bandwidth.

The reason these headlines work is that people have not been taught the reality of our solar system and space exploration. For example "10 milliion miles" sounds like a long way, but people do not know that this is barely 1/3 of the distance between the Earth and Mars at closest approach and can also be expressed as 53 light seconds, so the distance light can travel in just under a minute.

We don't need clickbait headlines when what was actually achieved by the mission is actually groundbreaking enough. What this does is turn people off from being interested in space exploration by hooking them in by implying aliens, then disappointing them.
