Got a message from facebook to the email address associated with the account I deleted ten years ago, something something updated terms. At the bottom, where I was hoping to see an 'unsubscribe' link, it instead looks me square in the eye and says 'This message was sent to [email] at your request'.
Shady company.

Trying to find a car wash near me, and the closest is something called "Colonial Car Groomers" which is just a collection of all the worst words.

If my calculations are correct, when this baby hits 300rpm you're going to see some serious shit.

A prism of led matrixes (matrices?) displaying noise and rotating faster than seems safe.

It's already slightly terrifying.

This is the current approach for reducing the horizontal field of view of the screens - a big heavy box o' slats. I'd like to make a lenticular array, but that's a whole side quest.

The black filament is surprisingly shiny. My first attempt turned out to be a light pipe, and didn't restrict the view. In this version, the slats have a zigzag profile.

It’s very unbalanced with only one collimator attached, so I’m spinning it too slowly for persistence of vision. But I’m sort of able to convince myself I’m seeing depth. There’s a lot of mechanical stuff I need to do before I can start cranking it up.

I was hoping to catch sunrise from the top of the hill this morning, but it was obscured by clouds. Still, I got a nice shot yesterday which is pretty close to the solstice. Then I realised that, being a creature of habit, I have a photo from the same spot and at the same time of day, but at (roughly) the previous solstice. All the way over there!

I pretty much stopped working on my affordable animatronic head when I reached the skin. There were too many new (to me) problems that needed to be solved simultaneously, and my iteration rate plummeted.

Having spent the past year building up a bunch of knowledge working with silicone, I've started on it again. This time I'm working from the outside in, small sections at a time.

It's amazing the difference there is between seeing something on screen, and stretching it between your fingers.

The original head promised a fair amount of expressiveness around the mouth, but I suspect that as I work back from the new skin I'll need to change it.

This is what it looks like in action, using face tracking to mimic my movements.

A short clip of me gurning shamelessly at an iPhone, while the bottom half of a plastic head belatedly copies me.

One of the gimmicks with this design is that it uses nothing but one type of (inexpensive) servo and 3D printed parts - and that's it. The only metal fasteners are the screws that come with the servos. The rest is held together with snap fits or bayonet style mounting.

I’m starting to accumulate a collection. They’ve served their purpose almost as soon as they’re out of the mould, but I can’t just throw them away. Maybe I should mount them on the wall.

I am happy to report that I now have an up-and-running Mastodon account reposting tweets from my “Anglophone Russia” Twitter list. My IFTTT applet is supposed to update pretty regularly, so hopefully it won’t lag too far behind all the tweets. Enjoy! @anglophonerussia

ancientjames,

@kevinrothrock looks like this stopped working - do you know if it’s fixable?

ancientjames,
@ancientjames@mastodon.social avatar

@kevinrothrock it’s a shame - my last vestige of twitter interaction was reading that list, unlogged-in
