andros_rex,

Not having debt would have been nice, but it’s kind hard when your parents shove you out the door at 17. I worked full time through college, shared an apartment with three other people, and ended up 50k to get a degree in a field that I can no longer work in (my state is currently covering up the murder of a transgender child, and as a fat hairy bearded man, I am legally required to piss in a stall next to teenage girls).

His advice works if you’re an upper middle class person with a supportive family. You can’t budget if you are making 12k a year.

andros_rex,

Nex.

andros_rex,

I think this verse is less about pederasty and more about sexual violence directed against adult men. I’ve read elsewhere that it was common in Bronze Age warfare for men to rape other men. “Sexual orientation” is more of a modern concept.

andros_rex,

In the US, Evangelical Christian’s did not give a shit about abortion until about the 70s, when they realized they could form a coalition with Catholics to gain political power on that wedge issue. Lots of people care about what the Pope thinks, so unfortunately the rest of us have to somewhat too.

andros_rex,

This is a photoshop. It’s not real. It’s old enough that it’s not even “AI.”

andros_rex,

This is unlikely to happen unless you are neglecting your home maintenance - the mushrooms are probably the least of these folks worries.

andros_rex,

I really wish my friends and family would understand this. This is something that I have to worry about, all of the time. It causes me constant and immense stress.

“I would not be welcome here if they knew.” - this is what I have to be aware of, all of the time. I do volunteer work and often drive out to rural areas - stopping at gas stations where they’d leer at me if I wore a mask inside 2 years ago… - am I safe if I get pulled over?

I’ve sat at workplace trainings and heard the things that they think about people like me - debating on if there’s a way that I can say something that won’t call attention to myself. I turn on the news or scroll through Facebook and see an endless stream of debates on whether or not I should exist.

All I want is to inject myself with testosterone (which my insurance does not pay for). I want my drivers license to say M. I wanted, and paid for, a mastectomy. Testosterone makes me strong enough to carry folding tables for homeless shelters. It helps me turn my anger into energy. It helps me exist.

I don’t understand why that bothers people so much. No one gave a shit ten years ago. My Pentecostal family were happy to call me their son. Trans people are just a convenient boogey man as part of a long term backlash strategy against gay and women’s rights.

When we fight back, we get killed. (And then blamed for own deaths/have our deaths covered up - if you believe that Nex offed himself, you know nothing about how corrupt Oklahoma is)

Edit: that was meant to read “didn’t off” himself. I said the opposite of what I meant.

Nex did not kill himself, Owasso covered up the bullying and pretty much every state department is understaffed by under qualified toadies of Stitt.

andros_rex,

Yes - I left out a word and changed the entire meaning of the sentence. I do not believe Nex killed himself. I believe that Owasso Public Schools and the Owasso police were complicit and are involved in covering up Nex’s death.

I’m a transgender teacher in Oklahoma that quit teaching last year because I knew that if something happened to me, there would be no help and there would be an immediate flood of bullshit.

The FBI exists because of Oklahoma’s refusal to investigate the murder of minorities…

andros_rex,

Mental health hospitals are hellish too. I can’t fucking stand Married with Children, not because of how stupid or unfunny it is, but because it was always on and I get flashbacks.

I attempted years ago - because I was dead broke and about to have to drop out of college. When I got out, I had lost my job and had to do survival sex work to eat.

The power structure of those places facilitate horrific abuse. For example, the Indian man whose screams have haunted my dreams for the past ten years - a man who had no family, came to the facility with no clothing… the staff (and patients) bullied the shit out of him. No one in that hospital was interested in helping him.

The psychiatrist I saw for maybe 15 minutes at the beginning of the day. All they did was prescribe me meds. There wasn’t any really meaningful therapy, at least as I understood it? It was more of a holding pen.

I think in the US, the horrifying truth is that mental health resources are mostly illusory. 988 exists so that we can pass out 988 stickers and pens - we can be the good people providing help. Therapists exist, but the waiting lists for good ones can be months and there are thousands of disturbed LPCs who went in to counseling for the wrong reason.

CBT is a shitty modality for things like “I’m miserable because I can’t afford to eat” or “I’m stressed because I got fired from my job when they found out I was trans” or even something as dumb “my body tenses up and I can’t focus my eyes when hear the name Al Bundy.” It’s symptoms focused and can be harmful for certain situations. But it also is often the only modality that one can easily access.

The entire structure of the mental health system in America is horrifically broken, but fixing it would require a complete overhaul of the system. So instead it’s bandaids - employee assistance programs and chat hotlines.

andros_rex,

Just curious - is 988 using “AI”? I’ve seen some strange and suspect conversations.

andros_rex,

I think seeing his fans then was a contributing factor…

Trump’s Truth Social is now a public company. Experts warn its multibillion-dollar valuation defies logic | CNN Business (edition.cnn.com)

Trump Media & Technology Group, the owner of struggling social media platform Truth Social, is began its long-delayed journey as a public company at Tuesday’s opening bell under the ticker symbol “DJT.”...

andros_rex,

Reddit is mostly bots. Trump social is gullible idiots. Selling gold and prepper shit on Trump social is going to be profitable. Reddit ads are garbage and have been hated by the user base since their inception.

The Schrödinger equation is a multi variable second order partial differential equation. You end up with a “position operator” and a “momentum operator” (momentum is mass times velocity, so we focus on the velocity bit). Because of the way that taking a partial derivative works, you end up applying one you can’t get the other.

Idk that’s probably a terrible explanation (I got a C in that class lol), but it is really cool when you see how the math works.

andros_rex, (edited )

He also had a comic called Red Panels before which was even worse. Stonetoss was a rebrand to come across as less horrifically racist. The article mentions this, but I think associating his name with Red Panel is also important.

andros_rex,

These kinds of programs are important in high poverty districts. Super transient population - sometimes students might attend for a couple of weeks and then disappear. Parents don’t speak English, or can’t read, so they can’t fill out the paperwork to get their kid on the free lunch program. Many of these kids come to school TO eat - when COVID shut my district down the schools were kept open as feeding sites. We provided breakfast and had a school food pantry.

I don’t think people understand how many children would starve without free lunch programs.

andros_rex,

Is it? My understanding is that Japan didn’t have a lot of awareness of the AIDS crisis (and still doesn’t really?)

I thought the body horror was more associated with fears of scientific progress. I’ve only seen Akira once so I’d love to watch it again in light of other interpretations.

andros_rex,

I did a pizza party for the class that made the most improvement on a benchmark test. Paid ~$100 in my own money, tried to get everyone enough for two slices. It wasn’t the right kind of pizza, they were still hungry, I didn’t get the right soda… fuck me for not dropping that cash on a fat j instead.

andros_rex,

Yeah, for sure! I’ve done a couple of attempts with toy programs to randomly generate lace patterns, which is a little similar and was really fun. As long as you go into it not expecting it to be perfect or even match what your prompt was, I bet you could have a lot of fun!

Specifically for knitting - can a machine be trained on the muscle movements involved in knitting? The feeling of tension in your yarn, how many stitches you feel comfortable crowding on that needles, how you need to move your yarn out of the way?

Knitting has some complicated stitches and movements that I don’t think have been replicated by machine. Crochet is not able to be produced by machine. I think that there is a kinesthetic understanding necessary for a sort of “AI” to really understand knitting which hasn’t been demonstrated by any models I’ve seen. Maybe someone will put sensors on someone’s muscles and try to “tokenize” the mechanics, but I don’t think that’s been done yet.

Writing patterns is a skill. Professional pattern writers test their patterns and modify them, calling heavily on their knowledge of that kinesthetic understanding. You could not just read a bunch of pattern books and write your own without having done the activity. You would need to be choosy in your pattern books too - anyone who does historical knitting/crochet/fiber work can tell you that there are lots of confusing, ambiguous, or wrong instructions! Can you consistently discriminate between different notation styles? Do you have opinions on magic loop versus ch6? These are things that I don’t think have been tokenized - and since most of that is ambiguity in human communication, where is “AI” supposed to pick this up from?

andros_rex, (edited )

Folding proteins is applying complex algorithms to data, which is what computers are good at.

Writing knitting or crochet patterns is a skill that requires being good at knitting or crochet as a human. You have to have an understanding of how a human does it to write a pattern - where to place stitch markers logically, when to switch tensions, knowing yourself enough to know how crowded you can let the needle before you’re going to fuck it up… Maybe we could apply “AI” to the mechanical movements and have it create an object from a pattern, but I think going backwards would be significantly harder.

Often I feel like “AI” stuff ignores a lot of technical aspects of the crafts in general. It has only access to visual/audio information that has been uploaded to the internet in some form. I doubt most learning is not done through that way. I watched hours of knitting videos and understood absolutely nothing, I attended an in person class and it stuck. Even if “AI” can model the outcomes of the creations, it can’t really be trained on the creative process.

andros_rex,

I did have sex with a man this morning, yes.

andros_rex,

That was a killing blow + “the professional quote maker.”

But it was a good place for some decent discussion back in the day. I learned enough biology from arguing with creationists there + youtube to test out of college biology….

andros_rex, (edited )

In my specific context I’m usually tutoring and not introducing the concepts - they’ve all learned PEMDAS and changing one letter is much easier. I suggest “groups” because they absolutely struggle with manipulating expressions inside radicals. I usually pair it with a short discussion of the purpose of notation.

I appreciate your mention of the importance of teaching the difference between operators and terms. My pedagogical background is in the sciences and I’m much better at doing math than teaching it 😅

I would like if math classes (in my area) did more explicitly teach the difference between terms and operators. I say “you can’t divide out the log” pretty much every day.
