Computer lab at my university with just three students and air con turned on. The course taking place here today has 40 students.

anna,

The same computer lab almost at full capacity:

anna,

I’m horrified watching it getting worse and worse every 5 minutes.

anna,

I think we’re going to hit 3000 ppm at the one hour mark at this rate.

anna,

I spoke too soon, we're at that level now.

anna,

Here’s a terrifying graph showing levels from when I arrived to 47 minutes after this class started:

anna,

Did I mention I'm the only person in this room wearing a mask?

anna,

We're at a point that the rebreathed fraction of air in this room is almost at 10%.

anna,

This class will end in 17 minutes.

anna,

I thought the worst I'd seen was CO2 ppm levels when someone turns on air recirculation in a car. I wasn't prepared to find out that 1h30mins in a classroom at my university is... terrifyingly bad...

anna,

At the end of this class:

anna,

My class tonight is at a completely different building, but also in a computer lab. We'll see how much better or worse that one is. (No live posting this time around, I'll post a graph later.)

anna,

It isn’t as catastrophic as the other lab, but still terrible. You can clearly see the moment I leave the first lab, walk outside, and enter the other classroom.

anna,

I have my doubts that talking to a professor would help when so many of them seem to think that poor concentration is solely a generational problem. I left my university campus with a headache, as it’s happened many times before.

I’d like to know if any group following COVID-19 closely has created a booklet of sorts with general guidelines like

• Taking care of someone who’s sick while trying to avoid getting sick yourself
• Testing frequency
• Best strategies to return to your usual routine after being sick

I ask this because I’ve been finding that official guidelines (if any) from disease control or heath organizations are all over the place. It’d be nice to learn from communities taking COVID seriously.

This looks like a negative RAT, but there’s a very faint T line there (which is a bit more noticeable in person).

When I mentioned the lack of clear guidelines for recovery from COVID-19, the majority of people seemed to associate the word ‘recovery’ with the period of time your body is actively fighting an infection rather than both the period with an active infection and the period after the infection.

When I say guidelines for recovery aren’t clear, I mean the latter. What you do after your body successfully fights an infection is as important as what you did when it was fighting one.

anna,

I understand why people don’t even think about it. My spouse and I had dengue fever two years ago. It took almost a year for my spouse to recover after his hospitalization—his case was quite severe. Not a single doctor talked to him about next steps for recovery when he was allowed to go home.

We tend to think about diseases like this in terms of cases (assuming the majority of them is this vague “mild” concept), hospitalizations (a worse outcome), and deaths (the worst outcome).

anna,

Any nuance or guidelines for medium to long term care plans seem to get lost at the height of an epidemic (in the case of dengue fever in my state and country) or a new wave in a pandemic.

anna,

And even when there’s neither, what’s the incentive exactly to let you know you should take it easy for a couple of weeks or months when the system requires you to push yourself harder and harder so you can go back to business “as usual”?

How many of you know what The Adventures of Tintin is? Did you know it before the “Captain, it’s Wednesday” meme?

Replace “[disability] did not stop [disabled person] from [doing something abled-bodied folks are expected to do]” headlines with “society tried really hard to prevent [disabled person] from living their life as they wish”.

OBSIDIAN, a thread
